Annand,l.auxen win Saddleback ATA trials By Tim Walker ORANGE, CA, MAR. 4 Mike Lauxen (Cag) proved once again that he is the rider to beat in A.T.A. trials this year. This was his third win in three tries. His closest competition was John Robertson (Yam). Lauxen led Robertson by five points going into the fourth and final loop, but Lauxen had the lowest loop score of nine points to win by eight points. Section-one rider Dan Dixon (Fan) edged Oli Thordarson (Mon) by three dabs to take third. Seven points back from Dixon for fifth was Matt Pritchard (SWM). ScottAnnand, mounted on a Honda TLR2OO, won his first Amateur event. The top three had seven cleans each, so it was the rider who was the most consistent to place first. Today was Annand's day by eight points over Clive Hannon (SWM). Reece Fesler (SWM) was five marks back for third. Senior Novice Boyd Bernard switched to the new Yamaha TY250L and took home first-place honors. Bernard was on his first ride on the single shock wonder and still has to get used to it. His competition wishes he would get used to it in the Amateur class. Mick Vanaman (Yam) was 13 points down for second. Duane Stone piloted his Italjet to third with a score of 95. Beginner Jeff Latimer put another Cagiva in the winners circle, Latimer also was another first-time winner. Honda riders Scott St. Clair and Taka Taniguchi placed second and third. Four loops of 10 sections each kept the riders busy. The sections consisted mostly of dirt banks which proved very difficult for most riders on the first two loops. Section three was by far the toughest test for the Amateurs. Entering down a very steep 25 foot cliff to a hard left tum over a drainage pipe then rode down a narrow gully to the hard part of the section - another left tum with riders trying to climb a four-foot embankment while still turning then to the exit. The Experts had this same exit and only the best made it. Section 10 was proved that when something looks easy it is usually very hard. Three turns on a offcamber sandstone bank had both Novices and Experts fiving this section. Results EX: 1. Mike Leuxen; 2. John Robertoon; 3. Don Dixon. . AMA: 1. SCon Annend; 2. CIi"" Hemon; 3. Fisher finds victory at Saddleback By Ken Stein IRVINE, CA, MAR. 4 Mike Fisher scored an impressive Pro win today on his CR250 at Saddleback Park, over a tough 30-rider field. Yamaha-mounted Robbie Brown holeshot the first moto, followed by Fisher, Brian Myerscough and Don Turk. Noone could hold Myerscough back for long as he moved into the lead on the second lap. Fisher moved into second as Brown faded. Honda rider Turk fell while going for second place, and Fisher rode home firmly entrenched in second behind Myerscough. The second moto again had Myerscough in third, but this time Brown followed Fisher out of the gate. It took no time for Myerscough to dispatch Brown, but Fisher held him off for several laps. When Myerscough made his move, he landed out of a jump wrong and fell, breaking his throttle. "I should have waited longer," Myerscough explained. "I knew I would catch him eventually. 1 tried to pass him too soon." With the pressure off, Fisher coasted home on the lead he built up during the heat of battle, far ahead of Terry Fowler's Honda, and the Yamaha of Tetsumi Mitsuyasa. Radical Ron Turner, who could manage no better that fifth overall in the 2505, led all the way on his 125cc Cagiva. Yamaha rider Vince McMahon, after bumping the gate at the start, nearly caught Turner on the last lap, but ran out of the race before he could pass. McMahon started the second moto in eighth, which, for him, is considered a good start. By the fifth lap, he moved up to second, but again couldn't catch Turner. Kawasaki's Greg Zitterkopf holeshot the first 500cc Pro show with Richard Sand's Honda nestled in third. Sands took the lead on the second lap, and when Zitterkopf fell, second went to Vaugn Style of Australia, on a Honda. Sands led the start of the second moto with Zitterkopf deep in fifth. It took Zitterkopf six laps to claim the lead, as Sands dropped back. Trevor Brooks, another Aussie, grabbed second on his Yamaha. Warren Strange proved to be the most successful of the group of I I riders from Australia, as he took first overall in the 250cc Intermediate class in a hotly contested battle with Chris Morey. Hifand miss day for Erik Kehoe at the Dunes By Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA, MARCH 4 Erik Kehoe, winner of the 250cc Pro class in the Golden State Series Spillway finale, returned to Indian Dunes with the Cali- Gery Cerivou (14) end Erich FertlChnides (72) leeds overell winner Denny Bernett (73) in the 125cc Intennediete cia. et Indien Duna. fornia Racing Club. Kehoe scored with a deadly hit in the 125cc Pro class but missed out on the 250cc Pro prize due to a seized motor and allowed Kelly Pugmire to become the victor. Kehoe placed his Honda in front of the pack with the start of the 250cc Pro first moto, while Pugmire ran in second. The closest battle was for third place as Ken Goldie was being pressured by Hi-Point's Donnie Best. Around a sweeper near the start, it was Best who took over third place from Goldie, while Kehoe. in first place, seized his Honda. This gave the top spot to Pugmire, but Pugmire dropped his Honda on the sandwash and lost the top spot. Best took advanage of this and became the new leader, however, a determined Pugmire remounted and set his sights on Best. The two met on the sandwash and Pugmire successfully passed Best for the win, while Best placed second over Randy Owen and Jon Wilson. Pugmire was confident' that Kehoe was shot down for the day and unable to find a way to race the final moto. However, when the 250cc Pro riders met on the starting gate for their final event, Kehoe was ready with his bike. Kehoe hooked the holeshot over Pugmire, Best and Owen, then Owen faded back and Jon Wilson advanced to fourth. The Mission Hills Arcol O'Neal backed Pugmire took the 250cc Pro top prize with a 1-2 tally. Best landed the second place money with a 2-3 score, while Wilson was third with a pair of fourths. Kehoe ended up in fifth. The six man l25cc Pro class was completely dominated by Kehoe who won both mows. Each time Joe Hopkins, from Ground Effects, was the runner-up rider. In the final round, Kehoe built up a minute lead over Hopkins and took the win. Hopkins won the second-place money, and Suzuki Country rider Mike Kell took two thirds for that overall position. County Raceway gets underway By Tom Griffith Photo by Bob Johnson PALMDALE, CA, MAR. 4 American Motocross Enterprises President Jerry Shore has succeeded. The first new motocross track opened in Sou them California in nearly a decade is a reality as AME hosted the inaugural race today on its own new home at L.A. County Raceway near Palmdale. As the racing got underway the usual schedule, letting the small bikes run first, was observed, but for future races, the announcer gave notice that everyone but the mighty Pee Wees will be taking a turn at being the last race of the day as a rotating-schedule format is being enacted.
