The National Papers (Continued from page 3) a guitar and has gi ven piano concerts here and overseas before he ever was old enougb to be in junior higb school. When are we ever going to get a place in Daytona where all the old and former racers can sign up and let people know they are in lOwn? One night I gathered some of them on Lhe Camel show at the Hawaiian and out of the blue a guy popped up claiming he had won the Springfield Mile in 1938 - on a BMW 500 sbaft-drive racer! I more or less tried to avoid furLher talk about it but he went out to bis car and brought back written proof of it. He also set a record doing it! Said he tried to tell them at Springfield last year and they would not believe him. His name is Joe Thomas. The same night I had the old ace, Ted Edwards, on Lhe show but the batteries in his hearing aid went dead and Ted just kept talking when [ was trying to ask questions. A grand old gentleman who is now 78 years young. · Three-time Daytona Beach course winner, Brad Andres, was not there but his dad Leonard was, along with Hap Jones and Bill Bagnall. Bill was minus his hairpiece that he bas worn so many years, saying it was just too much bother at this stage of the game. Former dirt track ace, George Roeder was in town, tuning for one of his sons in the Battle of the Twins event. George has a racing license again tbis year and was an official entrant in the Sunday half mile but said he was only speed-tuning his son's bike. He also announced on the Camel show that his hometown of Monroeville, Ohio, now has a stoplight and is up to 1200 people and ·still growing. · Believe it or not but both Roeder and BagnaJl were up on the Hawaiian stage during the race week doing the hula dance with the classy ladies in the grass skirts. Yvon DuHamel is still a millionaire in the garbage business in Canada and slim and trim as ever, but a lillie more gray on top. The five-time AMA National road race winner had no I uck in either of the two events he raced. Says he might try again at Laconia in mid-June. The largest gathering of press people to attend a Cycle Week function of this type was on hand to view Lhe new Honda V-4 the day before Spencer took it out and destroyed the one-lap track record. The bike got about as much attention as if it was Bo Derek instead of a motorcycle. Speaking of Bo, her daddy, Paul Collins was back once again after missing the '83 affair. Ed Kretz Sr. was planning on making it in his new motorhome but his recent heart problems knocked that idea out the window. Can't close without telling you about the vintage races on Wednesday. I was talking with Jim Sutter who owns a 1948 Indian flat tracker that was ridden in Lhe event by ex-shon tracker, Pat McHenry. I asked Jim if he wanted me to give Pa.t pit sigrtals with the lap board during the race. Jim said, "Roxy, when 'you race an Indian one does not give pit signals, you give the rider smoke signals!" I did not have the nerve to ask the Speedway people to let me build a fire in their infield - and besides, I knew what the answer would be. By the way, the old Indian and Pat went the distance and were running ahead of several very good old full dress road racers. All things considered, it was a very good week for a lot of people that were on and off the race track. Roxy Rockwood U' q ~ 00 0') • TICKET~ON 88 ~=-o-.f"'(~'1ON OR - - - - - - - - - MAIL HOWE AVE.
