McConn, Casey gas it at SHR By Sally Sideliner BRE TWOOD, CA, MAR. 4 It was a perfect race day as the largest class of Pros this year assembled at Sand Hill Ranch. A full gate of 250cc Pros led to a This Honda rider appears to have found a contact that he lost on the previous lap at Sacramento's MX track. Halcomb leads KTM sweep at Doyle HS By Moto-Depo DOYLE, CA, MAR 4 Charlie Halcomb, on a Jesse's Cycle/Hi-Point-sponsored KTM, rode to an impressive win today. Halcomb, who always makes that extra e££ort to overcome adversity, had to deal with a lost handle grip, a problem that would have slowed any other rider. On what turned out to bea beautiful race day, sunny with a light breeze, over 200 riders, the largest turnout in many years for a desert race in this area, showed up in Doyle, California, just north of Ren!? Nevada. The top riders from DIstrict 36 were here to ride a challenging 25-mile loop, four times, including the infamous "Dreaded Doyle Downhill", although most were up to that task. The start all went well and I was treated to an exciting dice down a high speed road. Four KTMs, led by Ron aylor on a Fator's KTM, and followed by John Haaker from South City Cycles, Halcomb, and Conrad Stitser, were in a pack going at least 90 miles an hour. It looked like the back straight of a mile. In a long funnel of dust was the rest of the pack, jockeying for positions. In minutes, all were out of sight. At the end of the first loop Ron Naylor had about 30 seconds on Super Vet Gary Vanderpool's, Bud Martin-tuned KTM with Haaker, Stitser and Hal· comb within striking distance. Positions remained fairly constant at the end of loop two, except for Yerington Honda Shop's Kevin Brown (Han), who had overcome a bad start and first race of the year • 42. , ,b)l,I~s, "'jl~ rl}l}l}ing,r.ir.thpYf~a)l..Qut on the third loop things began to happen, Stitser took the lead then, D F with a nat. Halcomb 10 this grip, but took the lead and never relinquished it. Haaker was on Naylor's rear fender, and Brown moved into fourth. At the finish Halcomb extended his lead, over Haaker, who passed Naylodorsecond, and Brown finished fourth, taking the role of KTM spoiler. Tony Escujuri maintained his 250cc lead followed by Duke Dowell on a Hi-Point Diablo Sport Cycles KTM. Reno rider Tim Leehe (Yam) maintained his first 25OccJunior position. All the top riders wanted to thank Bruce Young at Hi-Point for his help in this series and the Lassen M/C Club for throwing a super race. The next race in the area will be a Hare Scrambles on April 8, 1984, at Hungry Valley, evada just north of Reno. As the four began to put some distance on the others, Casey's front wheel washed out over a loose berm, then it was McRae's turn to go down in the sand. McConn went on for the win, as My then got second, and third then went to Ken Klein. McConn was visiting SHR from San Jose to prepare for the upcoming Weekend of Champions, and he took home a large cut of the SHR purse. McConn lead the entire second moto, with Klein close behind and Tony Richards third. Then McConn and Klein broke away, and McConn's £lawless ride made him impossible to catch. The only passing for the spectators to ee was Casey, who moved from eighth to third. Casey, coming from a disappointing 2.'>Occ moto, battled with his arch rival Craig Christain, and showed the I25cc Pros how to turn the throttle. Casey lead from tart to finish with a ten second margin over the runner-up Danny Boles' hopped-up Honda, and Christain's noticeably slower Yamaha, battled for the second as Fred Tunic1iH snuck by Christain for the third. Mota two was a repeat, with Casey again out-distancing the field. The battle once again ensued for second, between Danny Boles and Christain. With both riders giving it their all, Boles took the second for t1ie second overall. Results 250 PRO: 1. Sean McConn (Yam); 2. Ken Klein (Suz); -3. Rich Mythen (Suz~ 4. Mark Hearn (Yam). 125 PRO: 1. "The track's excellent!" beamed Yamaha National star and Canadian Supercross Champ Donnie Cantaloupi after scoring the proverbial "six-pack" award at the first round of the Hi-Point/Pacific Race Spring Series. The race was held at Sacramento Raceway Park's all new outdoor MX track. CantaJoupi new to all six Pro moto wins in the the 125, 250 and 500cc classes, leading each and every race start to finish, except the initial lap of the first 125 gO-'round. "This is one of the best tracks I've ever raced on. The riders need something like this to develop their skills if they want to compete on the National level. It's about time Danny got a chance to show his stu£[," added Cantaloupi as he complimen~c;d.hi,S former teammate, Danny Turner, on the ational-caliber course Turner laid out with tractor assistance provided by Hawk Int., Clothing & Sportswear. Turner has teamed with uclear Neukam to form Pacific Race Productions in an eHort to revive the fading motacro activity in the north tate. With major backing £rom HiPoint Racing A, as well as over 20 other sponsors, the six-race Hi-Poim Pacific Race Spring Series was born. Besides four events at the outdoor track there will be two in Marysville. Yamaha-mounted Cory Cantaloupi pulled the hole hot in the first PCP Yamaha/Suzuki-sponsored I25cc Pro moto followed quite closely by another pair of YZs with Tysonn Vohland and Donnie Cantaloupi aboard. By lap two Hi-Point support rider Vohland had secured control of the lead, as Donnie slipped by his younger brother and began to dice for first. The more experienced Cantaloupi took advantage of the wide course and gave the up-and-coming Yamaha-support rider a lesson or three in the "Theory & Technique MX Passing 3a." The horsepower advantage sported by 'Loupi was no handicap either, I might add. A less experienced rider, however, may have found it more than a handful on this track. Once Cantaloupi was out front there was no catching him, as he motored to win. Vohland finished second, while Hi-Point/Kawasakisupport rider Tim Aston sailed from seventh to third after amato-long battle with Harri on/Honda-mounted Steven Vlahos. "Leapin' Leprachaun" Vlahos held on for fourth, as Cory Cantaloupi rounded out the top five. Mota two was all Cantaloupi's as he sprimed to the checkered while recording the three fastest lap times of the day: 2:15, 2:15 and 2:14.5 three full seconds faster than anyone all day! The real race was for second as Vohland worked hard to repass Aston, after the Kawa-quicky swooped by in the early going. Aston refused any and all efforts by the Yamaha rider to regain his position. In the last lap, two turns from the finish blitz, Vohland searched in vain 'for a line around Aston but Timmy held on for an impressive second place finish. Aston secured second overall with his 3-2 score as Vohland went 2-3 for third overalL. Two fourths for Vlahos equalled the same overall, as Cory Cantaloupi combined two fifths for tha t overa] I. Cantaloupi put his factory-prepared YZ250L in the lead of the first Capitol Yamaha 250cc Promotowhile a bevy of Hi-Paint-supported Hondas filed in behind the Yamaha. Eric McKenna, Dave Coupe, Ken Beebe and Jerome Heiberger held positions two through five. After three laps, Coupe moved into second as McKenna pulled oH the track with a leaky cooling system. Camaloupi developed a huge hole in his exhaust pipe at the midway point, but a huge lead and plenty of horsepower still at hand were all he needed for the win. Coupe finished the mota in second aboard his HiPoint/FMF/Honda of Sacramemosupported CR250R while Yamahasupport/Hi-Point-sponsored Tyson Vohland finished a close third. Heiberger and Honda-mounted Larry "Dash" Dashiel rounded out the top five. 'Loupi fixed hi pipe between matos, pulled another holeshot and blew .•• ,a,n e~t;,n !>!g~e!" .hole in the exhaust
