Ostriem doublesat Mabton Dunes MX By The Squisher MABTON DUNES, WA, FEB. 26 Mabton Dunes opened its spring racing season with a large turnout of riders greeted by an all-new, one-mile track. Several days of rain prior to the race made the track dust free and gave the racers perfect traction all day long. The mini B class provided some of the best racing of the day as MA National Champion Lowell Thomson (Yam) rocketed inLO the lead over the first jump only to stuff his from wheel into the berm and let everyone by. Brian Thomson (Yam) took control of the lead which he held LO the fin ish de pi te a strong challenge by Oren Bray (Kaw). Thomson was able LO work his way back up LO third after a furious come-from-behind ride. In the second maLO, Lowell showed the rest of the riders the fast way around as he led the race from start to finish. After finishing fourth in the first maLO, John Sowards (Kaw) put in a great second-mota ride for second place, keeping Brian Thomson to third and giving the overall LO Lowell. The 125cc Pro class quickly emerged as a two-way ballie between Dennis Ostiiem (Suz) and Jamie Munson (Kaw). This was Munson's first Pro race and he showed amazing speed as he led the fi rst mota for several laps 'til Ostriem made a daring pass over the big jump. Ostriem appeared ready LO do the same in the second maLO, but crashed on the first lap while trying to pass a rider from the previous mota who had ignored the checkered flag. Munson jumped LO the lead but a spill half-way through lost the lead and the victory went to Dennis Ostriem. "Wild Bill" Kai er (Yam) jumped to the lead of the Open Pro class followed by Canadian Robbin Mayzes (Yam), Mark Johnson (Han), and David Bailey (Han). Kaiser led for several laps before starting to tire. J ohllSon, who was visiting from Montana, took comm'!nd of the race at the midway poim LO finish in first with a big lead. Gary Larson (Han) worked his way up from a fifth-place stan for second, with Bailey (not the national champ), in third. Mayzes, who DNF, was down in Washington to receive riding tips from Jim Pomeroy who was riding the Over The Hill Gang class today on a Cagiva. Johnson put in another outsta'nding ride in the second malO to take home the big money. Bailey moved up one place to take home some cash and get the nod for second overall. Rod Ostriem (Suz) hit the firstlUrn in front of a snarling p~ck of 250cc Pro riders nipping at his heels. Rod's brother Dennis. ("$lg),'calJle , PY,1A second place, leading Mark John on (Han), Ken New (KTM), and Ron Pomeroy (Cag). On the third lap Dennis Ostriem was able to outjump Rod and grab a lead which he never let go of. Pomeroy used his Cagiva to the maximum, moving up lO second with a strong ride. The stan of the second mota was nearly a repeat of the first except that Rod was able to hold on to second as Pomeroy had to sellie for third. Baldwin wears Slacks down for Sacto win By Nuclear Neukam SACRAMENTO, CA, FEB. 19 The newly ordained Saturday stadium MX races in the Motobowl at Sacramento Raceway saw the fearsome Jeff Baldwin return LO action and smoke the 125cc Novice class as he did so many times the previous season on Friday nights. Honda-mounted Rich Slacks pulled the fi rst maLO holeshot and £lew to the win as Baldwin pilled his Yamaha in ballle against another Honda wi th Bob Gibson at the controls for most of the race. Baldwin held off Gib on for second. Baldwin went for the lead right off the bat in the second malO. Slacks passed him briefly but Baldwin was soon back in front where he greeted the checkered for the overall. Slacks was second for the same overall while Gibson combined twO thirds for a third. Mark Hale put another Honda among the lOp spots with an 8-4 fourth avera II. Shaun "Show Boat" Wooten, the only 80cc Expert in the 80cc class, dazzled the assembled masses (?) with consistent one-handers over the stairstep jump while leading and even went for a no-hander while approaching the checkered the first maLO. Th . fact that he nearly missed the bars on his lanqing mayor may not have been a'contributing factor in his decision to keep his hands in the proverbial gorilla-grip in maLO two. • Results VETS: 1.
