Hendricksen handles the Pros at Saddleback By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, FEB. 25 Yamaha pilot Kurt Hendricksen bested a tough field of 250cc Pro riders at this weeks Saddleback Saturday MX race. Hendricksen's main competition was Kawasaki rider Paul Denis, who won t.he second moto but placed out of the money in moLO one with mechanical problems. Honda-mounted Ed Arnet placed second overall for the day with a 2-3 score behind Hendricksen's 1-2 finishes. Third place went LO Rob Brown ridinga Yamaha with a~ot~er Yamaha rider, Andy Guth plCkmg up the fourth-place share of the cash. Australian National champ Stephen Gall LOpped the Open Pro class of his YZ490. Despite ndmg with a sore wri t caused by a practice mishap, Gall was able LO edge Honda rider Vaughn Stylke, who placed second for the day. Honda pilot Don Turk rounded out the LOp three. TaborPappcameouton topofthe 250cc Intermediate ballie by convincingly winning the second moLO after taking a third place in round one action. Tetherton took a Z-I comefrom-behind effort to a $70 cash topspot payoff over John Conney and Kenny Dunlap. Kawasaki-mounted . John Canney returned LO Barona LO score a tie-breaker second over Dun- lap (Hon) and then went on to pick up a dominating two-for-two win in the Modified. Intermediates. In the large Stock Intermediate class Micha.el Dickerson (KTM) picked up an exCiting tie-breaker win over John Yonekura (Suz): It was Mike's first ride on the "White Lightning" brand and also his first Intermediate career win. In Novice action, last year Beginner rider Rodney Howe (Hon) proved to be this year's Novice rider LO watch, as he parleyed three firsts and a second to overalls in both the Stock and Modified 125cc classes. In the Mini classes, Dax Billings (Yam) made his first Barona appearance of the year a winning one, as he downed arch rival Steve Furuya in the Stocks with Furuya coming back to top the Modifieds. The real show stoppers, however, were the Novices, where Marc Burnell topp~d a huge Stock field for a career first Novice win. New rider, Mike Berkley (Yam) pu t in an early bid for 1984 Rookie of the Year as he tie-broke RonnieThomas for second. Thomas is gelling back on the right track after a severe car/bicycle accident in 1982 that left his future in some doubt. 1983 Rookie of the Year Darren an ford (Kaw) returned LO his winning ways in the Modifieds with Thomas a~n getting edged out of econd; thiS time by Larry Lemire (Yam). Sammy Vella finally had hi first career victory in Pee Wee Stock class. Just a year ago, Vella was getting lapped in each moto, now he is doing the lapping!
