Fallbrook, CA 92028 This By Joe Milian Kawasaki's future professional hopeful Kit Vick was too quick for the assembled field of 125cc Experts and Larry Hughes won a wild aHair in the 250cc Pros to highlight action at Conroe Motocross Park. Vick's domination was thorough in both motosofhis race and theonly point of contention involved the clash for runner-up cash. Rusty Dovell won that battle. posting a 2-3 score for the day to register his best showing to date as a money rider. as he edged John Bersch by a single point. Bersch appeared unbeatable in practice, handling a newly added sand section with relative ease while.others [loundered. Ironically, it was this portion of the track that proved Bersch's undoing in moto one. [orcing him to work his way back up to fourth at the Cla·g. He was back on track in the second round and his finish behind winner Vick placed him third in the overall standings ahead of. former minibike sensation Jason Otto. Crashes were the order o[ the day in the 250cc Expert division and none was more spectacular than the one at the start o[ the opening heat. Mark Saxer and Micky Pizzitola were the stars of the show. with Keith Coffey and a host of others playing supporting roles. Going wide into the first turn. Pizzitola and Saxer locked bars and executed a tandem endo that scattered bikes and spectators alike. After a brief pause for medical attention, all participants rejoined the action (or the restart. Richie Hull took the holeshot and was well on his way to the win when he committed an uncharacteristic error in the back section by the river and was forced to limp home in 21st position. Terry Thomas assumed the role of leader then and held on ahead of Hughes and Willie Phee for the victory. Mike Clement once again demonstrated that if one must lose it then it is best to do it in style with the maximum amount of onlookers on hand. His get-orr. arguably the best of the day, dropped him to 16th. Jerry Surber also was sidelined with a bad case of "brain drain." Hughes showed his smooth and consistent ways again as he moved from mid-pack to second by the end of the moto. Hull and Clement assumed their rightful ranking among the leaders, coming home third and (ourth respectively. Overall (or the afternoon the greenbacks were awarded to Hughes. Thomas. Phee, Rusty Dovell. JeH Arnold, and Ronnie Herrmann. Dovell. by virtue of his performan e in the 125s, was top money winner of· the day. Billy Whitely was most impre sive in capturing the top spot in the I 25cc Intermediate class, doing the majority of his riding alone. Chad Parker. who has on occasion proved to be the equal of Whitely, suHered his share of adversity today and did not crack the top five. Brett Wagnon was a solid second and rapidly improving Robert Neiheiser served notice tha t he will be a future rivaJ for Whitely. Jason Lang[orp and Dave Shade paced the Mini Senior line-up and Charles Edwards and Chris Gunter won their separate 125cc Novice divisions in some o[ the most closely contested racing o[ the day. Edwards' refusal to yield to Vince Rjzzo's relentless pressure in the deciding heat was one of the more difficult accomplishments, considering Rizzo's experience. Keith Hatler upset Ronnie DeRouen in the 250cc ovice race with tacy Horn wedging in between the two and pushing DeRouen back to third.
