TEN YEARS AGO CZ-mounted privateer Tony DiStefano nailed the Open-class win as the Florida Wir,ller-AMA Series ran its second race, this one at Hialeah. Suzuki's Mike Runyard finished second, followed by Maico rider Steve Stackable. Another Maico rider, Mark Blackwell, had been dicing with DiStefano for the lead in the final moLO, but hit a lapped rider on the last lap and dropped to fourth. In the 250cc class, Gary Jones won the first moto on a Can-Am, but a broken axle set him back in the second. That·gave the win to Suzuki's Rich Thorwaldson, who was trailed by Honda riders Tony Winn and John Dallaire. On the other side of the country, CMC held a big-bucks MX at Saddleback. Maico rider Rex Staten played the rocket-man, winning the 250 and 500cc Pro classes. Team Honda was present, but had their troubles, with privateer Mark Tyer recording the 125cc Pro win on a Honda, despite the presence of three factory riders in the class. In the 250s, Staten had a final-moLO battle with Kawasaki's Jimmy Weinert, passing him on the final lap for the win. Gaylon Mosier was second overall, however. In the 500s Staten had two clean wins over Husky rider Jim West. Lots of riders flocked to the Soboba Indian Reservation for the an n ual 100-mile Soboba Grand Prix. Malcolm Smith led the fir t twO 25-miJe laps, but his Husky eized and he DNF. Unofficially, big-bore CZ rider Jim Fishback led the final two laps for the overall win. Flat trackers Steve Eklund and Jerry Kole made a one-day trek from Portland, Oregon, LO Santa Rosa, California, for more indoor short track competition. At Santa Rosa, Ossa rider Ekl und notch.ed h is second 250cc Expert win and Yamaha pilot Kole took hi third 360cc Expert triumph. They had been in Portland competin~ in the final round of an AMA senes. Triumph rider Neal Mackel was both Top Eliminator and 750/0pen class winner in a hillclimb at DeAnza Cycle Park in Sunnymead, California. Kerry Peterson was a double winner as well, riding Maicos to wins in the 400cc Stock and Modified divisions. In thg Mini division, Honda-mounted Becky Mathison be ted the Yamaha of Micky Dymond for the class win. A storm is about to engulf the forests, the deserts and the motocross tracks of America. Cole won the J25cc Expert class ahead of Bob Messer and Jeff Wecker, then came back to finish second in the 250cc Experts. That race went to Yamaha-mounted JeH Blix. Corona Raceway was the site of regular TT crambles events. and in one, Montesa rider Dan McWhorter won the 250cc Expert class over Yamaha pilots Jerry Greer and Mike Tidwell. Tidwell finished second to Eddie Lawson in the 125cc Experts. Mark Adent borrowed a 250 Penton from a friend. and then used it to win overall in the Desert M.e. 0-37 hare and hound. an even-more-powerful 500, and o.ur Sonic MX that's now 562cc of 4-stroke thunder.
