McRae, Vohland' gas it at SHR GP By Sally Sideliner BRENTWOOD, CA, JA .29 It was the first "Grand Prix of Motocross" and the toughest 45 minutes of racing ever seen at Sand Hill Ranch. The majority of riders who came in preparation for the GOlden tate Series were in awe of the well-prepared track and the extensive length of the races. Mo t of the racers joined together LO compete in team racingbuttheendurance award wem to Kawasaki rider Kimo Casey of Comra Costa Honda for surviving two Pro battles and going on to win the team race. The 250cc race featured Doug McRae aboard his new Husky ride and looking quite dapper in a new white outfit, Dubbed the "White Knight' by officials, McRae kept spotless by pulling the holeshotand maintaining the lead throughout. A full 45-minute batue raged behind him for second place. Rich My then of Skip's TwoWheeler Suzuki held econd place but Ca ey worked up to My then' fender and it was nip and tuck for the last half hour. My then had some excellent lines in the back ection and down Godzilla Hill, but Casey would close up on thenat track ections and the power of the KX would allow him to pull alongside My then on the uphills. On the final lap Casey got the edge on the uphill and made the pass. But My then made a do-or-die attempton the downhill and regained second right at the checkered nag. In the 125cc Pros, Tyson Vohland's Yamaha just plain outpowered the others on the start, giving him a comfortable lead 20 minutes into the race. Craig Christian and Casey followed in second and third before Casey took a nose dive of[ the bike, settling for third place. Mini riders had a field day but fatigue began LO haunt many of them. Doug Delay had a tough time gelling across the gate after his bike stalled, but he took advantage of the long race and worked up to second place. Danny Paladino's Honda took the win and Terry Bostard wa the outstanding Mini Expert. The team racing consisted of six five-man teams that stirred up a lot of dust by late afternoon. At the fini h, it was Cantaloupi, Douglas, and Honda-mounted Dan Dennis with the overall the same_ The Minis showed orne of the best action during the day. With a combined class of one Expert and four Juniors it looked like Kawasakimounted Expert Steve Lamson would have it easy. Not so - only in the first moLO was he able LO stay Out in a comfortable lead over from the pack of Juniors who were fighting a good battle shortly behind. The fastest in that field looked LO be Hondamounted Robbie "Rabbit" Hermanec. After a fast stan, he fell four times and dropped back to third.
