Fitzgerald flies, Michetti motors to DeAnza MX wins By Michael Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, FEB. 12 Mike Fitzgerald (Hon) was unbeatable in today's 250cc Novice class at DeAnza Cycle Park. Fitzgerald, new to the 250cc class, proved he feels at home on his· new, full size machine after a relatively short adaptation period. Suzuki mounted Paul Dworshuk was the only rider to give Fitzgerald any serious worries, as he turned competitive lap times but couldn't seem to close the gap in either moLO. Dworshuk's second overall was well deserved because his second moLO was spent trying LO find a line around Mike Ward (Suz). Ward put up a good fight for six laps, then, with two laps remaining, Dworshuk passed Ward, reeled in Greg Traver (Hon), and somehow passed him before the checkers for a consistant 2-2 score. Traver was third overall with a 3-3. DeAnza motocross promoter Ed Michetti showed a diverse group of Senior Veterans the rear wheel of his CR500 for all of the first moLO, and most of the second. MOLO one watched Michetti holeshot and pull his only open class competition, DaveJacobus (Hon), by ten bike lengths. Jacobus went down on the second lap, leaving second place to YZl25 mounted Howard Keeling, who tarted LO pressure a very tired Michetti towards the end of the moto to make for an exciting ending. Michetti bla ted to an early lead in the second moLO as well, but this time Jacobus looked determined to make him work for it. Michetti kept his cool until mid-race when Jacobus slipped by and builta small but comfortable lead to carry him through the checkered £lag. Michetti held on to second despite heavy charges £rom Dan Sanchez and hi RM250. Michetti's 1-2 was first over Jacobus' 4-1, Sanchez landed third with a 3-3. Results PEEWEE DIV I: 1. Barnes (North H.S.) topped the 175cc Senior class. High school action in full force at Corona night MX By Nate Rauba CORO A, CA, FEB. 10 Arlington's Mark Decker and North's Chad Barnes finally got to meet tonight in high school competition, but Tustin's Greg Tracey and North rider SCOtt Mape kept them apart mo t of the time, proving that the I 25cc and 175cc Senior classes don't just belong LO two riders. About the only time Barnes and Decker ever saw each other was duro ing the first moto of the I 75cc Senior race. Barnes look the lead right from the start with Decker trying to neak by on the inside of the first turn. Tracey and Mapes came around way back, having apparently fell. Two laps later it was Tracey's turn to fall, handing third back over to Mapes. Meanwhile, out front, Barnes main· tained about five bikelengths over Decker for the entire race to win the opening round. When they came back a race later for the 125cc Senior race, it was Decker in the lead this time with Mapes right behind. By the second lap Decker had built a lead he would keep to the finish, while Tracey had moved up and stole second from Mapes. A lap later both Mapes and Barnes passed the fading Tustin rider and spent the rest of the moto battling over second. Mapes was the runner-up as Barnes went down in some slippery mud trying to get by on the last lap. Mapes holeshot the final 175cc Senior moLO with teammate Barnes and Tracey following. His lead only lasted for three quarters of a lap when he went 0[£ the side of the downhill sweeper and crashed. "I had this line, and on the first lap it wasn't there," he said. Barnes inherited a slim lead over Tracey, who by the second lap had his hands full with Decker. Tracey held his ground until the final lap when Decker finally found a way by, but it was too late as Barnes held on for the win. A £Iat rear tire didn't stop Decker a he shot into the lead of the last 125cc ,. Paul Denis (415) puts the pressure on Doug O'Donnel in the 125cc Pro class at Saddleback. Denis went on to take the win ahead of O'Donnell. Senior race. Tracey and North's Scott Bums (riding Intermediate) pulled in behind. After two laps Decker and Tracey were only inches apart, while Burns, Mapes and Barnes stayed a few seconds behind and fought for third. Heading into the final lap the only change was that Barnes had passed Bums, and only two bikelengths separated first from fourth. Then, exiting a £Iat sweeping turn, Decker's rear end spun around and deposited him on the ground. Tracey went by and held on for the win over Mapes, who captured the overall with a 2-2 score. • Results HIGHSCHOOL MINI SR: 1. Paul Iverson (M.D.); 2. Madardo Juarez (Col); 3.
