tive ease on his KXSO. Robby Hermanek did most of the tailing until a
D F in the last half of the second
round gave second overall to Troy
Lindemann. Young Travis Brown
topped the ovice portion wi th wireto-wire wins and first-time competitor Joe Lawwill hung in for a 3-4
combo and second overall.
Now what happened is that the
rught before at the Cow Palace indoor,
we were aU sitting around the sky
room before the parade of champions
interview when I bugged both Buggs
and Men, got them talked into going
to the motocross; Men got sixth, not
bad Eor a guy wbo honestly retired
five years ago. However, can you
imagine the look June Lawwill must
have had for her star husband who
comes in with a smile and a son who
comes in with a trophy?

Cahors COps Sears
Point Series Finale
By W.H. Spencer
SO OMA, CA, JAN. 30
Round Five of the Sears Point
Raceway Winter Series saw
Brett Cahors in top Expert form,
winning both motos of the

Open Expen class and leading bOlh
250cc rounds. Cahors won the second
by a wide margin but missed out on
the overall with a first-round DNF.
Former Mini thriller Howie Ross
took his first-ever Expert motocross
win over Tim Tremaine while Jim
Cressa beat out old man Billy Grossi
for the I25cc honors.
Cahors blasted out oE the stan gate
in the first 250cc moLO and led Jim
Cressa's Pacific Racing Honda for
three and a half laps when the CR250
rider pulled off with a blown head
gasket. Cressa continued on for the
overall with Grossi putting all the
250cc guys LO shame as well, passing
and catching Cressa on his new Moore
& Sons KTM 125. Tim Tremaine
caught up LO Howie Ross and Craig
Stair and it looked once again like a
125cc track, but it wasn't.
In the second round Cahors was
back and gone, all at the first turn.
Brett is getting ready Eor a Florida
tour and should give the sand boys a
run, after pulling away to a big threeminute win over Cressa and Grossi.
Ross kept hold of second 250cc for the
overall while Tremaine moved his
Yamaha to second over Stair.
Round Two Eor the day was reminiscent of ancient history TT racing
with former pro racers Dick Mann,
Men Lawwill and Rich Lokke. But
the guy LO beat was Dr. Al Baumann
who bas been riding six mOlOS a race
for the last two months and appears
ready for an ironman triathalon.
Lokke led the Eirst moLO on his
Honda Peninsula CR500 but found
himself sideways and down halfway
through the second lap. Mann, the
two-time Grand National Champ,
rode off fonhe win with Bill McCljnLOn second and Baumann catcrung
up Eor third.
Baumann and Mann put on the
classic battle Eor the first three laps of
the second round, running side by
side for the first six miles until one
off-camber section where Baumann
took the mgh line and low sided.
McClinton was following closely
all along: "When AI went high. I
thought he might not like it and when
bailed I moved in and then at the end
I had a chance and got by." Bugs got
the overall on his tricked-out fourstroke Husky with two aces while
McClinton, another 50-year-old, second and Bauman third. Lawwill?
Oh, yeah, that's next.
