Word and Fisher tangled, when misjudging lapped riders. Junior Mike Oglesbee had lady luck on his side and was in the right place at an opportune moment to inherit second over Word, who remounted and went back through traHic at an incredible rate to finish third acro s the line ahead of Glender and Adams. Word did get a win in the Open Pro trophy dash, but in the Open Sportsman dash, it was Zirbel controlling the tempo while Word took second. Horban ran away with both 250cc dashes with the same sizzling tempo he used to win the main events and carted off first money, trophys and contingincies, and proved he is definately one of the fastest riders in the area. Results Woodland 250cc Pro winner Jim Anderson (73), now riding a Honda, sets up Kenny New for a pass. (Hon) led division one with a win and a second. Gary Abraham (Hon) went 3-\ for second. Chris Coleman (Hon) zapped the second di vision wi th two wins ahead of Bob Johnson (Hus) with two seconds. Results - WEE PEE WEE: 1. Andy Snow (Vam); 2. .Joey a-rren (Yam); 3. J-v Haler (yam!. Horban, Word rule Benton County STopener By Clay Ught CORVALLIS, OR, FEB. 4 The opening race of the 1984 Oregon indoor series in Corvallis had AMA Junior Robert Horban blow the lid off the arena in the 250cc Pro and "A" Main events on the Mayfield Enterprises/ • Automania/Light Racing Products/Grants Pass Suzuki RM, while Nationals number 85 Frank Word stormed to the Open A win. Surprising, first year AMA Novice Marty Zirbel put his Chaney's Auto Yamaha into the winner's circle by edging out Word in an exciting Open Pro main event. Horban launced his water-pumper Suzuki 0(( the line in the 4-4-1 staged 250cc Pro final. The race was preuy much seuled in the early stages of the main as Horban quickly built up an unbelievable lead over a dueling National number 34 Tom McCullough and AMA Junior Mike Hu((man. McCullough took the final transfer via a semi, and had second 10 his own after shaking off Huffman and a horde of AMA Pro's consisting of Greg Renard, Scott Nelson and Ryan Fisher. Horban sailed on to take the checkered flag for the biggest payoff of the night and show what he has in SlOre for the outdoor season. McCullough did everything he possibly could to close the gap but senled for a second over Hu((man, Nelson and Renard. Fifteen-year-old Robbie Blagg has shedded the mini bikes and looks quite impressive by gaining a final slot in the 250cc A main event. Robbie nailed the scratch but Horban swooped by the startled mini-sensation and runaway with what would be a total domination of heats, trophy dashes and mains. Horban had early trouble with Bultaco Astro rider Mike Moritz. Moritz pressured for two laps until Horban kicked in the afterburner and blitz to the checkered flag and used the lapped riders, which caused massive pile-ups, 10 block 0(( a Moritz/Bob Klum/Ron Adams battle a half lap back. Moritz nabbed second and KJum third at the flag. Word motored away with the Open A main event on the Electro West! Husqvarna U.S.A./Simpson Husqvarna after an early baule between himsel£, and up and coming Zirbel, and Steve Kendig, which was the order at the finish. Word wasn't as lucky in the Open Pro main and was bumped back 10 second by Zirbel's 500cc Yamaha. Word's 500cc Husky MX-based machine rode Zirbel's tail, but Zirbel rode at an incredible rate of speed and held the inside line for the majority of the main, and from there on in just plain cruised, while Word and nemisis Fisher bauled the bars for second over a Chuck Glender/Ron Adams/Dick Knox swapfest. Word and Fisher ran inlO lappers just as their baule closed them in on Zirbel, who ~ot the lucky break when on the last lap for the win. Manning took the checkered flag in third with Tyler, Smith, Hall and David Froembling fourth through seventh. The second moto found Manning and Yamaha Support's Doug Lange leading the pack on lap one with New, Reid Goldman and Hollinger rounding out the top five at the conclusion of lap one. Tyler made a quick move up to second after three laps and Anderson was slicing his way from another sub-par stan to take the fourth spot. By the white flag it was clear Manning had the moto well under hand while Anderson worked his way to second in front of Tyler, Hall, New and Froembling. PEE WEE: 1. .Joey Garrett (Vam!; 2. WA, JAN. 2\ The second of three Kingdome qualifiers went into the books this weekend with an all-time record 320 riders showing up to do baule on Jim and Mercine Blasdell's Woodland Winter Track. Cold and icy conditions were the order of theday and it was surprising to see so many riders having such a fun time in the sloppy mess. It was also surprising to see the 250cc winner Jim Anderson clad in red, white and blue instead of the familiar yellow and black. Anderson is now Hondamounted and put forth two excellent motos to capture the overall win for sponsors Beaverton Honda, MX Fox and Simpson. Eric Hall once again wason topofthe I25cc situation with another double moto win on his Beaverton Honda/Sun Products/Marushin-backed machine while Chris Moritz did the same on a Hinshaw's Honda ride for the Open Pro win. Both HaJJ and Moritz have won all four motos during the series in their respective classes. Twenty-seven 250cc riders filled the gate to capacity for the start of the first molO and when riders swept around the first turn, KTM rider Kenny New led Steve Smith on a Suzuki, Hall and another KTM rider, Gard Hollinger, with New looking good up front. Smith and Hall followed suit behind for the first three laps. On lap four it was very evident that three more riders were about 10 enter into the fray up front. Anderson was on the gas after a dismal start and now in the fourth spot with Robb Manning now out of retirement and aboard a new Honda in fifth, leading Scott Tyler on yet another KTM. New looked great up front while Anderson moved past Hall and Smith into second place by the end of lap four. The three laps that followed found Anderson coming from a large distance behind to £inally get by New Results Cropper, Bozarth blowout Clarks Branch MX By Clay Ught ROSEBURG, OR, JAN. 29 KTM riders Jeff Cropper and Rick Bozarth made a long trip South to Roseburg and came up winners in the Clarks Branch Winter Series on the best day of racing to date in the series. Both Cropper and Bozarth blew the Jids 0(( the \25cc and 250cc Pro classes, respectively, to net top cash. Suzuki pilot Ted Perreard, a rider of all around durability being a flat tracker, MXer or whatever the case may be, LOpped the 250cc fntermediates. also with a clean sweep. KTM/Moto-X Fox/A-I Cyclesponsored Rodney Keller led the Pro parade into the first turn at the start of moto one and held a commanding lead, and led the first lap over fellow KTM rider (MX/desert speedster) Bozarth, Honda rider Kevin White, Randy Toreson and Scott Russell. Je£f Cropper got off in the back of the pack, but rapidly began to put his 125 amidst the bigger machinery, while up front, it was Keller and Bozarth battling it out for the lead. Keller held on for three laps until dropping out which put Bozarth in sole command over White and Toreson, who would one lap later develop prob-
