Halcomb leads warpath at Indian Gulch HS BRENTWOOD, CA, FEB. 4 By Jim Bowman Curt Wilcox from Castroville, California placed himself in the winner's circle for the fourth consecutive time in the Continental Motosport Club's Golden State/Skoal Ban- COULTERVILLE, CA, JA .29 dit Series. The 500cc Intermediate class rider came' out of today's event at Sand Hill Ranch with 164 points to top Ryan Beair's 137 and Aaron Pipes' 133. PreSlOn Petty rider Pipes slipped into the early lead in the first molO of that class. Right behind Pipes were Wilcox and Beair. The pressure increased and soon Pipes gave way as Wilcox zapped him on a slippery downhill while Beair chose an uphill. Through the finish line it was Wilcox with the win over Beair, Pipes and Honda riders Donny Anderson and Gregg Blechman. There we.re 40 contestants in the 500cc Intermediate class and all were waiting patiently on the line for the start of the final moto with theexception'of Wilcox who took numerous practice starts, did wheelies and some other trick riding trying to keep his Suzuki running because it was fouling the plug and had become hard starting. Again Pipes took the holeshot. Duane Quale and Gary Wilson had poor first-moto finishes but were running 2-3 in the final. Both Quale and Wilson were soon demoted by Wilcox and Beair. Wilcox then worked on Pipes and succeeded on a downhill just like in the first molO. For this molO it was Wilcox, Pipes, Beair, Quale and Wilson. With two moto wins Wilcox gained an additional 41 points a.long with the overall win. Shaun Kalos, 12, from Litchfield park, Arizona, is still riding min icy- c1es while upsetting older riders as a 125cc Intermediate. Kalos took the first molO win in the I25cc Intermediate division one race, passing Jason Rincon on the second lap while heading up Godzilla Hill. Phil Butler was third, Randy Rush fourth and Rich Truchinski fifth. In the final moto it was a battle for the lead between Richie James and Rincon. James held the lead on the first lap but Rincon took it away after that. Jim Perry followed those two in third ahead of Butler and Tim Carrillo. Kalos had a bad start and wound up seventh. The 2-1 tally of Rincon earned the lOp prize, Butler was second with a 3-4 and Kalos' 1-7 was good for third. Fourth went to Randy Rush for his 4-9 effort. Dan Crouch was fifth. Results 60 0-8: 1. Jesse's Cycles/Hi-Point sponsored Charles Halcomb not only rode his new 495cc KTM across the finish line first at the District36 Indian Gulch Hare Scram bles today, but finished with almost a half-mile lead over second place rider Doug Noell (Mac Robertson's Dinosaurs). Noell's finish aboard a 1981 Maico 400 was almost another halfmile ahead of the dicing Husky duo of Dave Bertram and Jeff Irwin (HiPoint/Inter-Link/Sun River Cycle). Irwin led Bertram around the first lap, but Bertram (Hi-Point/O'Neal/ Bell/Cycle Gear) passed him on the second lap and finished third with a margin that was just out of Irwin's striking range. Many of today's riders held their posi tions from the first lap to the finish. The dusty condition in the middle of January was not only a surprise, but made it awful difficult lO pass. Finishing first 250cc Expert behind the dust of the LOp four Open bikes was Duke Dowell on the Diablo Sport Cycles KTM, who passed KTMmounted Gary Fargo on the second lap. John Roitinger (Yam) and Matt Cullins (KTM) followed on 250cc bikes to fill in the top four in the 250cc Expert class i!nd round out the lOp eight positions overall. In the Junior class racing, Brett Gary won the overall and was the only Open class rider to make the first-row Open class start count. Robert Day and Tony Escujuri diced their way up from the second wave start to finish first and second in the 250cc class and second and third overall. Robert J. Rice finished second in the Open Junior class at eighth overall. Results OPEN EX: 1. Charles Halcomb (KTM); 2. Douglas Noell (Mai); 3. David Bertram (Hus). 250 EX: 1. Duke Dowell (KTM); 2. Anderson aces Woodland MX By Jan Newman WOODLAND, WA, FEB. 4 Jim Anderson rode his Honda to two solid wins to top the 250cc Pro class at Woodland MX Park today, while Lonn Inman (Kaw) and Chris Moritz (Hon) earned the 125 and Open honors by way of consistency. When the gate dropped on the I25cc Pros, Honda rider Keith Foidel hit the first turn first and declared squatter's rights on the spot. Hondamounted Jeff Sowards held the second spot for a third of lhe race until Inman took the po ition. When the second mOlOcamearound Jeff Cropper (KTM) had returned after replacing a head gasket which went in practice. Foidel and Inman led off the line but by the end of the first loop Cropper had control of first place and led all the way. Foide! yielded LO both Inman and Sowards and the two of them spent the rest of the moLO sorting out second. Inman won the duel and first overall with his 2-2 finishes. Foidel's fourth was good enough to give him second overall. The Open class was exclusively Honda-mounted. It appeared as if John Christian had complele command of the first molO but he suddenl y pulled off, the victim of a broken frame boll. Moritz inherited the lead and held it lO the finish. David Bailey and Dave Cotter followed. Christian and his Honda held together LO completely control the second moLO. Moritz moved by Bailey in the second lap to take second and the overall win. Arne "Holeshot" Hettrnan's Honda hit the corner first in the 250cc Pro class but Anderson was in front at the end of the lap and the end of the race. Jeff Chapman put his Honda on Arlderson's tail by the second lap and he hung on like a leach through the whole race. Ted Holt (Suz) held a comfortable third until he laid it down and Doug Lange (Yam) got close enough to slip by on the final lap when Holt took a bad' line. Anderson, Hettrnan, Rob Burkhart (Yam) and Holt led lhe first lap of moLO two. Burkhart dropped il on the second lap and Hettman got in trouble on lhe third. Meanwhile, Marvin Waldo (Kaw) had worked up from a mid-pack start to push Lange, who in turn was pushing Holt. Lange took the second spot at tbe halfway mark and Waldo went by Holt with two laps to go. After Chapman's spectacular first molO, a bad start topped by a crash dropped him to a disappointing 14th. In a rare occurance the Open C class had to be split. Pat O'Grady 23
