Pomona Valley Kawasaki's
Danny Camley made a fine
come back today, after a short
vacation from racing, by win-

ning both 125cc Intermediate moLO
aheadofP.V.K.teammateTerry Szucsko and Yamaha-mounted Alex Lopez.
In the first moLO, CanLley reached
the first turn ahead of Answer product's Steve Burdelle (Kaw) and Szucsko. Suzuki-mounted Gilbert Valdez
and Cycle Guide's Ron Lawson (Suz)
were arguing overfourth while Lopez
was playing catch-up after a near
last-place stan. By the third lap, Valdez took third place away from Burdelle and started LO gain time on the
leaders. By mid-race, the order was
Cantley, Szucsko, Valdez and Lawson, who was starting to hear Lopez
behind him. Cantley continued to
turn consistant lap times throughout
the moLO and, in doing so, stretched
his lead over the competition. Lopez
got by Lawson with a few laps remaining but was unable to gain any
ground on Valdez, who had lost sight
of Szucsko. So, with so much space
between the LOp five riders, no passing LOok place LOwards the end of the
moLO and the order was Cantley,
Szucsko and Valdez.
Szucsko took the start of moLO two
with Cantley and Lopez in tight formation. Lawson was holding a strong
fourth over Burdelle and Brad Johnson (Suz). Lopez somehow screemed
his worn-out, year-old Yamaha past
CanLley's 84' KX on the first lap, and
did the same LO Szucsko's on the
second lap. This provided some of
the best, most competitive dicing of
the day because Lopez had no room
for error and was abusing his mOLOr,
clutch and gearbox through every
turn to stay ahead of the green machines. On the sixth lap, Szucsko
went down and picked up scooter up
in fifth place. This gave CanLley an
unobstructed view of Lopez and he
began reeling the banzi Yamaha pilot
in. Szucsko was making a mad dash
and caught up to Lawson on lap ten.
Cantley took first away from Lopez
and stretched his lead with each lap
and made the order Cantley, Lopez
and Szucsko, who made a daring,
last-lap pass on Lawson. Cantley's I-I
was first over Szucsko's 2-3, while
Lopez earned third overall with his
4-2 sore.

Nielson nails win
at Corona
Nighttime MX
By Nate Rauba
CORONA, CA, JAN. 27
John Burr Cycle's Bill Nielson
was untoucha ble tonigh tat Corona Raceway by winning both
I25cc Novice motos.
MC Country's Chris Lester (KTM)
led the pack to the first turn in the
opening moLO, but that was the only
taste of the lead he would get all
night. Nielson took itawayoutof the
first tum and immediately established
a small lead. Rick Lane (Pomona
Valley Kawasaki) was close behind in
third, and on the second lap, he
decided to do some dicing with Le ter. First, Lane went high, only to
find the KTM blocking his line exiting the corner. Then he tried the
inside a few corners later and snuck
by, only LO have Lester repas him a
few feet further up the track. Lane
stayed close LO Lester but was passed a
lap later by Mission Yamaha's David
Kirkpatrick. As Nielson continued to
stretch his lead, Kirkpatrick nabbed
Lester but couldn't shake him right
away, as Lane was till keeping up
the pressure back in fourth. On the
fourth lap Lane crashed hard and
was out for the night; With the pres-
sure off Lester, Lane sellied into third
behind Kirkpatrick. Nielson was far
enough out front LO crui e across the
finish line, quite a few seconds ahead
of Kirkpatrick. Lester couldn't hold
third and succumbed to a last-lap
battle between B.J. Millspaugh ( uz)
and Chris Sparks (Sinisalo/Kaw). At
the flag, Sparks held third over
Mill paugh and Lester.
It was Paul Pitzonka (Rincon Kawasaki) who was firstLO the first tum
in moLO two, just ahead of Nielson
and Kirkpatrick. Both quickly displaced Pitzonka and stayed close out
from for a couple of laps. By lap
three, ielson put a lillie bit of distance on Kirkpatrick and stretched
his lead even more on the following
circuil. Kirkpatrick caught up with
two laps remaining when Nielson
was slowed down by a lapper, but
once by, Nielson re-eslablished superiority and won by a few seconds.
Millspaugh rode in third the entire
race and captured third overall.
High school racing was dominated
by North's Chad Barnes. No one
ould keep the Yamaha pilot in sight
as he ran away with all four moLOS of
the I25cc and 175ccSeniorciasses.lf,
and when, Arlington hould meet
Nonl1 later this season, there is sure
to be a good race bet ween Barne and
Mark Dekoker, who won much Ihe
same way earlier in the eason.

Ulmer smokes
250cc Juniors at
the Dunes
By Tom Griffith
VALENCIA, CA, JA .22
Weldon, California's premier
250cc pilot Burt Ulmer blitzed
American Motocross Enterprise's first 1984 race on the
International Lrack at Indian Dunes.
Ulmer had no difficulty shocking
today's largest field; taking back-toback moLO wins looking smooth and
easy.
In both exciting moLOS, the 250cc
Juniors raced for runnerup spots as
Bun powered his Yamaha to uncontested wins. Back in the trenches,
Rick Perez and Tom Baker fought
the pack LO emerge in second and
third, both sharing five-point rides
but Perez gelling the nod for second
with his 3-2 ride.
Summer Series ace Guy Giffin
showed hi stuff in the Intermediate
class. Waiting until late in the first
moLO, Giffin shadowed Guy Arnone's
Honda and dove inside on a tight
turn and led the last lap LO the
checker for first. Making a dramatic comeback after an early spill,
"Wild" Willie Surrall flew his Belli
Kal-Gard Honda mount to a final
fourth. In the second go, Surrall
blasted the start gate, rounded turn
one in were as fast and smooth as the
Juniors. Charlie Love from Kawasaki-Sama Barbara, mOLOred LO an
Imermediate lead and was never challenged. But the next six riders engaged
in a fierce bailie a Jason Yoshida,
Mike Henson. Danny Anderson and
Craig Nolan hammered it out. Passing and repassing, Nolan and Yoshida
left the pack in hot pursuit of the
fleeing Love. Ta]
