athern Nevada· Southern Californla·Arlzona·Southern Nevada Houston TT (Continued from page 9) non and Thompson. When the flag fell it was Cunis Cannon out on top with johnson second and Perkins third. On the second lap, Hames moved to fourth, and one lap later, had slipped by johnson LO take over the third spot. Rainey was also on the - move as hecame up from fifth LO take over the fourth spot on the fifth lap. Thompson, who is still having trouble with his starts, came from the seventh spot LO ixth but still had a long way LO go. Hames started having engine problems on the fourth lap, and by the eighth go around the mOLOr was gone and he was on the sidelines. At the half way point, Curtis Cannon puton quitea show in the lead with Hames making his final lap in second, Perkins third, Rainey fourth and Thompson fifth. With the demise of Hames everyone moved up a spot, but Cannon still kept the LOp spot out of reach. On the thirteenth lap, Thompson made his move on Perkins and took over second. It was a case of the youngsters showing the veterans the way home, and they did it in style with the one, two spots going to first-year pros. Perkins was third with Rainey and Johnson fourth and fifth. Of the 15 starters, ten were still in the running at the end of 15 laps. Big brother, Chris was not about to be outdone by his lillIe brother as he collected the marbles in the 250cc Money short track. Eddie San Roman got the nod off the line with Cannon second and Donnie Harrell . third. San Roman did not seem too at home on the smaller bike and lost the lead to Cannon on the third lap. Harrell snuck by one lap later to putthe pressure on Cannon, butthe man was not aboutLO be intimidated and kept his line; blocking well all the way around. Don Driggs who was running in the fourth spot, had his engine go on the ninth lap an that was it for him. At the end of IS, it was Cannon, Harrell and San Roman. . . The Open Money short track saw Ross Klall jump into the lead with Randy Bird second, Jeff Johnson third and Pete Ha'mes fourth. Klall held on for four laps before Johnson found the hole he was looking for and took over the lead. Klall contended with Hames for two laps before Hames got by, but Klall came right back two laps later and regained his spot. Hames was not to be stopped as he turned the tables again and second was his. Not too many were paying much allention LO Curtis Cannon, who was quietly doing his thing in fourth. All of a sudden, he made his pressence felt on the tenth lap as he moved into third. With five laps to go, the front runners were established and it was Chris first, Hames second and Curtis third. Reid, Hannah battle at Saturday Saddleback MX By Lee Kober ORANGE, CA, JAN. 14 Team Yamaha rider Warren Reid won both mOlos of the 250cc Pro class after hard duels with Team Honda rider Bob Hannah, who is just coming back from the injury that sidelined him at the end of 1983. Reid took the first-mow holeshot with Hannah right behind on the factory Honda. New Team Yamaha member Keith Bowen took a midpack start but quickly moved into third place behind Hannah. On the third lap, Hannah jumped into the lead and started to put a few seconds on Reid. Hannah stayed in front for a few laps until Reid forced his production Yamaha into first place_ Hannah stayed gl ued to Reid's back fender and tried every trick in the book LO get past him. Hannah slid out near the end of the moLO and Bowen slipped past the Honda pilot for second. Reid 'LOok the win while Bowmen held of[ Hannah for second place. Hannah had LO sellle for third. In the second moLO, Hannah took the holeshot with Reid in second and Bowen third. Reid quickly jumped into the lead and left Hannah behind. Bowen stayed in third about 10 seconds behind the" Hurricane." Reid won the moto and the overall with Hannah taking second overall in front of Bowen, who took third. In the Open Pro class, Honda pilot joe Bond won both moLOS easily over Yamaha rider Mike jackson, who placed second in both motos. Third overall went LO Yamaha rider Tim Cauby. • Results 125 PRO; 1. Year Doug Chandler, and the everpresent Fay lUcked in behind. While Shobert and Filice pulled away, Chandler and Fay were taking turns passing each other in the tight turns, with Chandler seeming to have the upper hand. Then coming off the jump and going into the tight sweeper, Fay collided with Chandler in what one trackside reporter described as "a classic T-bone." Result; both riders down, Fay out of the race and Chandler back up in last place. Meanwhile, Shobert and Filice pulled away even more to finish 1-2, while Kenny Tolbert, who last year did wrenching chores for Ricky Graham, swept past the Fay/Chandler wreckage LO take over third place and make the final. Semis The firstsemi-final had quite a few of the heavy-hitters who had been unlucky in the heat races - Randy Goss, Garth Brow, Scott Parker, Ronnie jones - and only the winner would transfer LO the main. For a while it looked like none of the established stars would win, as jeff Haney grabbed the lead at the start and held on for almost half the race until he stalled his Honda's engine in a tight turn. Brow and Goss then took turns leading the way. with Parker in third. In the end, Goss prevailed, and Parker, Brow and jones had to hope for a win in the Last Chance Qualifier. The second semi was a Doug Chandler/Steve Morehead show after the pair got around quick-starting Matt Rozowia. The lead changed hands several times, but Chandler seemed more willing to hang it out when he needed to and the junior Team Honda rider LOok the win. Last Chance Qualifier It look three starts LO get the Last Chance Qualifier underway smoothly. and no one in the 'Dome felt worse about the restarts than Garth Brow. The Flint, Michigan, rider sprang to holes hots in the first two starts, both of which were nullified by red flags because of crashes. The third time was not Brow's charm as SCOll Parker got the lead and Steve Morehead claimed second. Parker stretched his lead over Morehead and Brow -toabout three seconds, safe enoug-h LO allow a one-hand-off-the-bars, Supercross-style victory wave to the crowd while flying off the jump on the last lap. After failing LO make the short track final on Saturday, Parker's hotdogging was understandable_ Junior final Sixteen-year-old northern California rider Chris Carr was easily the class of the junior field, running away with the Junior TT final to match his performance in the junior short track the previous night. Carr is only the third Junior LO score a HousLOn double win, jpining the lofty company of Bubba Shobert and jimmy Filice. Using some of the cleanest lines of the weekend, Carr quickly cleared away from the elbows-out racing going on behind him and showed why he is giving the Experts so much trouble in the combined-class Great American Shootout indoor series. Carr, wearing a helmet-stretching grin, managed to blurt out,. "This is great! I love it!" after the Win, before moving over to the trophy stand to hold up a trophy that was almost as tall as him, and kiss Miss Camel, who was only slightly taUer than him. National Fifteen riders lined up for the 25I lap final; three factory Hondas, one privateer Honda and a lone Yamaha against 10 similarly engined HarleyDavidsons or Can-Ams. At the start it was the red, white and bl ue of Team Honda up front as Bubba Shobert led Ricky Graham. Pete Hames was in an impressive third and Steve Eklund, not making a particularly good start from his frontrow position, was fourth. Randy Goss, Doug Chandler and SCOll Parker were hampered by their back-line start positions but were al ready starting to move towards the front. Of the three, Parker seemed to have the best drive. On lap three Jim Filice, riding the beautifully finished brown-and-tan Harley Owners Group-sponsored machine, crashed 'Yhile trying to move up through traffic and was out of the race with a painful arm injury. Graham, meanwhile, had closed tightly on teammate Shobert and appeared to have the edge in handling, as Shobert's bike kept pushing its front end whenever Shobert tried to take the tight inside line_ Graham got past in the shon sweeper on lap five and from that point on the race was his, the first win he has recorded for Team Honda. For a while it appeared that Eklund would make a run at Graham after first getting by Shobert. Graham and Eklund were using the same lines around the race track, but Graham's Honda appeared to hook up with more authority comingoutof corners. Eklund said later that his shock started acting up in the latter stages of the race, forcing him to be careful about rolling on the throllie when exiting turns. Lapped traffic was also a factor, with Graham making good use of the backinarkers to put more ground between himself and Eklund. The order, then, for the top three was set and remained constant: Graham, Eklund and Shobert. Back in the field, however, things were jumping. Parker, Goss and Chandler had moved into the LOp eight and were disputing positions wi th Hames and Alex Jorgensen. At one point, Parker had moved up LO fifth behind Hames, but had trouble and slipped back to eighth. Goss then edged by Hames to hold down fourth, but couldn't make up any more distance on the leading trio before the checkered flag fell. Tired, but happy with his comefrom-behind performance, Goss said after the race, "I just tried LO pick my lines. I'm really tired, though. When you give guys like Graham that much head start and try LO catch up, it really tires you out." When informed of the tie with Graham in points, Goss joked, "Back to the same old thingf" "I just used the track," was Graham's explanation of his race-winning ride. "The cushion was on the outside, so I'd run into the corners high, turn as soon as I could and try LO make the straights as long as possible_" Asked if he was aware that Eklund was behind and at one point catching up, Graham replied, "No, but I figured Steve would be my toughest com petiLion; he and I ride a lot alike. But if you start worrying about who's behind you, then you start to screw up. I never worry about who's behind." • - Results 1. Ricky Graham (Han); 2. Steve Eklund (H-D); 3. Bubba Shobert (Han); 4.
