Rider and bike wound up OK. however. Burnworth powered his production uzuki (Barnell had the only "works" bike on the team) into the lead at the start of the second final. while Glover followed a clo e second. However, in the first turn. Reid cra hed hard and had to be carried off the track on a streicher with a po sible broken leg. In fourth chased Breker. Lhen came Phil Larson and Howerton. By the end of the fir Llap, Glover had taken over the lead while Ward; in seventh. crashed after colliding wilh Donnie Cantaloupi. Ward dropped back to last. but not for long. He picked off rider in a furv and had control of the fourth position near the end of the race. Glover took hi second vicLOry of the night followed by Burnworth. Breker. Ward and Larson. last Chance Qualifier After leading most of the Last Chan e Qualifier, Rodney Smith lost his chance LO qualify for the main after crashing in the whoops. Australian Jef[ Ljesk. riding for Team Tamm, LOok over the lead with uzuki's Rick Ryan hot on his tail. While pUlling heavy pressure on Liesk, Ryan also crashed in the whoops. ending his hopes. Keylon made his way up through the field to challenge Liesk for the lead, but the two rammed into each other and Liesk took the worse of it and he too era hed ou t of contention. Keylon found him elf in the lead but was passed a few turns later by Holland. Holland managed to keep both wheels on the ground and Lransferred into the main, along with Keylon. Main As the pack jammed into the first turn at the tart of the 20-rider main, Breker emerged with the lead closely followed by Hicks. Burnworth, O'Mara, Myerscough and John Whelchel. Only a half lap into the race, Burnworth slipped by both Hicks and Breker while O'Mara did the same. Bringing up the rear of the field were Lechien and Johnson. "I got a fair start.·· said john on afterwards. "Then something happened to Lechien. He cut off the track, clipped my front wheel and crashed me. That left me in dead last." Other favorites: Hannah and Barnett were 12th and 10th, respectively. By the end of the second lap. Burnworth had gained a twO- econd lead over O'Mara. but it looked as though for the next couple of laps, O'Mara was stalking his prey. On the fifth lap. O'Mara made his move and passed Burnworth in the whoops. "[ d ided I'd better get around Scott before Ricky, David or jeff caught up'-· said O'Mara. "1 had to get him quick - that was my sLrategy." By the sixth lap, Bailey worked his way into third and put massive pressure on Burnworth. Bailey finally lapped the Suzuki pilot in the long, whoop section and started to reel in the leader. However. Bai ley's effortS ended abruptly when he crashed over ajump. He recovered quickly enough to salvage fifth. At thaL point, O'Mara held a verv comfortable lead ahead of Burnworth. Ward was up to third after an eighth-place start. and led Glover. Bailey and johnson. Halfway through the race. Burnworth began to tire and dropped back to fifth after stepping off his mount in the whoops. He ran along ide his Suzuki half the di -lance of the 23whoop straight before remounting. A lap later, johnson held the throttle to his production-based YZ250 wide open and passed Bailey. Burnworth and Glover for third. With only a few laps remaining. a huge distance separated the top three riders. The only rider who was still on the move was Bailey who stuffed his way by both Burnworth aod Glover. From thatpoimon there were no position changes. O'Mara easily took the win ahead of Ward, Johnson, Bailey and Glover. "With four laps LO go, I got stomach cramps and I didn't know if I could make it." said O'Mara. "I thought I was going to throw up. But l am really happy winning the opener and I hope things stay that way. Even though Hannah and a couple of other riders are recou~rating from injuries. they will be a threat for the remaining serie ." 'Tired! I'm really tired," said Ward after the race. "[t's a tough track. The harder I charged, the more I got ou t of shape. I twisted my ankle on the fourth lap which broke my concentration but it dido't really slow me down. I should've passed more riders right away, but I didn't." • Results 1. Johnny O'Mara (Han); 2. Jeff Ward (Kaw); 3. Rick Johnson (Yam); 4. David Bailey (Hon); 5. Broe Glover (Yam); 6.
