The National Papers (Continued from page 3) with the other three spots going to 750cc machine. Let's predict that there will be no 750s in the final this time. All 500s and 600s. 1983 Houston shon track winner Terry Poovey will be back to try for his second win in the oval af{air. Terry has been riding and winning in early season indoor events in the Lone Star tate and still has his 'Dome-winning250 i-Ionda from last year. The runner-up, Randy Goss, wheeled a 250 Harlev into second place a year ago but wiil show up this time on a new Can-Am/Rolax/ Harley-David on that has been track proven by the Ii kes of Alex Jorgensen in past Nationals. Ricky Graham bows in for the first time as a factory rider astride a new Team Honda XR500 ingle. The last time ~icky threw a leg over a single he scored a sweep in the time trials, 'heat race and main event at Pontiac, Michigan, in the Silverdome TT, the final National of '83. Jay Springsteen and Scotty Parker join Go,ss on the new 500cc singles for Harley-Davidson as Gos shows up at Houston [or the second time carrying the big number one plate. The first time around in 1981, Goss had mixed results. He finished fifth in the shon track, but failed to qualify for the TT. While the Harley team is made up of the same heavy point-scoring trio, Honda fields an all-new team oj Graham, Texan Bubba Shoben and last year's rookie sensation, teenager Doug Chandler. Chandler gets his first Houston test as an Expert. Last year as a J unior he won the yellow-plate TT final and was leading the shon track invitational when the engine quit. No Junior has ever won them both but Chandler came the closest. Longtime 'Dome champion Steve Eklund, winner of the TT in Texas last time, will try and break the longstanding jinx 9f doing it all under the roof one year, and then not doing it the next. This should be his "off" year but most have learned a long time ago to not bet against the only double 'Dome winner anytime he is back under the "eighth wonder of the world." All the new first-time rookies will be out with new bikes, new racing leathers and new numbers. 1983 produced a pretty good crop and only Chandler chose to advance in midyear under the new system. Washington's Randy Green was the only rookie to make either final a year ago, finishing a strong third in the shon track. The TT had no firstyear hopefuls. Let's hope thaI the 1984 season does not follow the same pattern that haunted the two '83 Astrodome winners. Neither rider came close to winning another National final the rest of the season. Daytona time The schedule is out for the entire week. Kenny Robens and Freddie !j>pencer are getti'ng ready to meet on the track for the first lime since they took it to tbe wire in Europe last September. 1982 winner Graeme Crosby from New Zealand is back [or the first time since he won the 200. Rich Schlachter col11es out of a year-and-ahalf retirement on a new 500 Honda to challenge. The "Snowbirds" Will oe down from the north in droves as anywhere (unless you are from California) will be warmer than what they have had since last Novem ber. March 5-11 is the official Cycle Week.
