CMC Golden State/Skoal Bandit Amateur Series: Round 3 utton breaks close points contest at Huron By Tom Corley HURON, CA, JAN. 21 Jimmy Button, known as "Monkey", set back the competition in a close points contest for the 60 and 80cc Intermediate 9-11 titles in the Continental Motorsports Club's Golden State Skoal Bandit Series. Going into today's event at Huron it was Button with 77 points and Tommy "Too .. 18· Small" Clowers having 76 Points in the 60cc cia s. An even closer battle exi ted in the 80cc Intermediate 9-11 clas a both Button and Jimmy Clay were tied with 79 points. Bulton called the hots in the 60cc lass with two maLO wins over Clower. Clay and Button plit maLO wins in the 80cc Intermediate 9-1 I contest, with Bulton becoming the overall victor as his final-maLO win decided the outcome. Bulton and Clowers are hard-fighting rivals yet both are campaigning for American Honda aboard CR60 bikes. "Monkey" jumped ahead of the pack LO take the lead in the first maLO of 60cc racing. Clowers, at a distance, was running in second place. The top rider for Kawasaki was Jes James, known as "The Bandil," who pulled through with a third. "Mighty Mouse" Joel Tokarsky hooked fourth place while Tony Sulek tagged fifth, both aboard green machines. It was nothing short of Bulton all the way in the final moto of the 60c class. Clowers came closest but not close enough to consider passing the leader. Mike Becema was apparently being lapped and fell on the triple jumps right .in front of Clowers. "Too Small" just barely avoided Becerna and continued in se ond. James was running in third on his Kawaaki that had a lowered seat ju t to allow the retired Pee Wee class rider to ride. Pressuring James was Don Piatanida, who oon took away third place. James wa pushed back to fourth ju t ahead of Tokarsky. Jimmy ButLOn swept the 60cc class with twO firsts. Till overall win gave him a LOtal of II point. Clowers is still a threat LO Bulton though he trails with 114 points after a second· place Cirri h. James had a 3-4 tally which earned him third. Fourth went to Tokarsky, who chalked up a 4-5 tally, and won his first trophy ever in a Golden tateevem. Piantanida rounded out the LOp five with an inconsistent 10-3 tally. Bulton faced Clowers once again in the 80cc Intermediate 9-11 class, though Jimmy Clay was Bulton' main rival as they were tied pointswise. Taking the lead in the first moLO was ButLOn, Steven Kotajarvi and Clay. Then Bulton dropped hi Honda on a corner after a big jump. Kotajarvi took his Kawasaki to the lead over Clay and Bulton who remounted in third. On a very rough uphill section, Clay powered his Yamah
