CMC Golden State/Skoal BIIndit Series: Round Z Ward doubles in green sweep By Kit Palmer HOLLISTER HILLS, CA, JAN. 15 Thanks to Jeff Ward and Goat Breker, the second round of the Continental Motosports Club's Golden State/Skoal Bandit Series was a Kawasaki sweep. Ward did the hard part by capturing wins in both the 125 and 250cc Pro classes, while Breker did the honors in the Open Pro class for the second (Above) GOilt Brelter came from behind to win the first 500cc moto, end led most of the second to capture the overell end extend hi. points leed. 125cc Pro Ward put his factory Kawasaki 10 the front of the field after they rounded the first turn, closely followed by new hotshoe Ricky Ryan. Behind Ryan and his Suzuki was Gary Bowman, who snuck by Ryan during confusion of the first few turns. but Ryan retaliated quickly and settled into the second position. In third was Yamahamounted Mike Beier, followed by Brian Manley, Steve Vlahos, and Danny Storbeck. By the end of the £irst lap, Beier zapped Bowman for third, but Bowman overtook Beier after a couple of turns. At the halfway point. Ward had built an eight-second lead and that was all he needed 10 take the win ahead of Ryan. On the last lap. Bowman and Beier were stuck to each other but Bowman held on for third. Beier finished inches ahead of George Holland, who put in a last-minute charge. Holland jumped 10 an early lead at the start of the second molO, but breathing heavily down his back was Rodney Smith on a Yamaha. Hallway through the £irstlap, Ryan blitzed by Smith and set after Holland. Ward, after a seventh-place start, was on the warpath and caught up 10 Bowman, stuffing by him on a tight right hander. At the same time, Ryan took over the top spot after Holland went down and dropped back to about 10th. Then Ward took care of Smith a few turns later. It didn't take Ward too long 10 catch the leader, and when hedid, Ward blew by Ryan and ran away. At that point, the lOp 10 riders were evenly spread out as Ward crossed the finish line £irsL Ryan took second ahead of Smith, Bowman and Holland. week in a row. "We're (Kawasaki) really jazzed," said Breker after the races. "We're considered by most to be the underdog, so it's great having the underdog team win. I think this is the first time we've swept all the classes. More are on the way." However, Kawasaki could not pick up the win in the 80cc Expert class because of Yamaha's Eddie Hicks. Hicks took both molOS after dicing heavily with Honda's Scott Brown. 80cc Expert (Above) Scott Burnworth (56) held off Werd for the first few 250cc lep. in the first moto, (Below) Scott Brown took second in the Mini Expert cl.... 6 When the gate dropped for the start of the first Mini Expert moto, Brown shot his Honda 10 the front of the pack inches ahead of Honda-mounted Shaun Kalos, Hicks, Kawasaki pilot Kyle Lewis, Mouse McCoy and Brad Kadau. Last week's winner Mike Healey was back in 10th, but it wasn't for very long. During the second lap, Healey put his Suzuki behind McCoy in fourth. By this time, Hicks had taken the second spot away from Kalos but was still four seconds behind the leader, Brown. By the end of the third lap, Healey slipped past McCoy and set after Lewis. While Brown and Hicks were runnin~ away from the pack, a dogfight over the third spot had begun. Kalo , Lewis, Healey and McCoy were battling handlebar to handlebar for the next couple of laps. Then, while braking for a sharp left turn, Healey got out of shape and went over the bars. hitLing the ground hard. Healey laid there for a little while, a bit shaken up but not seriously injured. He reentered the race a lap later but outof contention. A few turns later. Lewis slipped by Kalos for third. Up front, a duel for the lead had developed between Brown and Hicks. Hicks made his move through the woodsy part of the track and took over the lead for good. Hicks went on to take the win ahead of Brown, Lewis. Kalos and McCoy. Brown again jammed into the lead at the start of the second molO with Hicks hot on his tracks. Brown managed 10 hold on 10 his lead for a couple of laps, but then relinquished the top spot 10 Hicks. From there on, Hicks just opened up a comfortable lead and rode cautiously to the win. Brown settled for second while Healey, Kalos and Mike Kiedrowski follo~e4- I { t I t , J I ~ ). J J r. Barnett's problems continued as he dropped to fifth only two turns into the moto. Team Tamm's Brian Myerscough trailed in third only a few inches ahead of Ward, Barnett, Russ Wageman and Billy Liles. Halfway into the first lap, Myerscough snuck by Berluti as did Ward soon after. Ward also banged his way around Myerscough. As he did, Ward's machine clipped Myerscough's bike and tore the footpeg off the Honda. That put Myerscough out of the race. Barnett Qlli, ckh 1R~ssesi -,;\erllJ,lli fqr .tpi~d.
