PRODUCT EVALUATION ~ 00 ....... Jeb's JC/COM-2 Helmet If you were to take a look at the crop of full face street helmets currently available, you might think there was some sort of doning process going on -aside from minor detail differences, most look pretty much alike. We were in the hunt for something just a bit out of the ordinary, and the bill was filled quite nicely by Jeb's JClCOM-2. Jeb's broke away from the round-is-beautiful school and designed a helmet with a wrap-around groove to break up the spherical theme. It's either a love or hate proposition, but most of our scrutineers liked it. Topped off with multi-colored graphics (painted on), we had a real winner on our hands. The shell is made of hand-layered fiberglass, with the facial opening cut to allow good peripheral vision. The shield is formed from Lexan plastic, with a weJl-engineeredratchet mechanism to hold it in position. When dosed, there are no air leaks around the shield and road noise is reduced toa minimum. A dear shield is standard, and there's an optional smoke version. The interior is well appointed, with a dark blue knit mateJ'ial .as a liner. One welcome feature is the extended foam padding at the rear that seals out the wind from the back of one's neck, which no doubt contributed to the overall quietness when all buttoned down. . We've been wearing the helmet on a daily basis, and find that at normal speeds there's little tendency toward unwanted movement since the fit is perfect. Take time to get fitted properly, and check the amount of dearance between your nose and the front padding, since it may be a bit tight. The DOT approved unit is available in metric sizes 57 through 60, which translates to the more customary 7~ to 7~ in ~ increments. The size 58 corresponds to our tester's normal 7\4, and fits properly. When snugging down, you'll appreciate the Velcro strip on the strap which effectively cures £lapping-strap syndrome. .Overall, we're pleased with our Jeb's JC/COM-2. The European flair (jeb's is located in Italy) yields a' helmet that stands out from the crowd and is quite comfortable to wear. The unit retails for $174.95, while replacement shields sell for $8.95 from your dealer or Quadrifoglio, Inc., 5745 North llth St., Phoenix, AZ 85014, or dial 602/265-5846.
