TEN YEARS AGO Indoor short track racing continued in San Francisco's Cow Palace, and Bultaco rider AI Kenyon triumped in the main event. Rick Hocking led the first 17 lap, but then ran into a backmarker and crashed. Dave Hansen took second at the £lag. Mike and Steve Bast continued their speedway tour of Australia, and won a "Best Pairs" event over several Australian teams, scoring 18 points to the 14 of the runners-up. The musical chairs game of the '73'74 season was going on. Yamaha announced that it had signed Giacomo Agostini to contest the World Road Racing Championship and Gene Romero to bolster the United States effort. The Triumph/BSA/ Norton effort was to consist of David Aldana and Mike Kidd after Gary Scott went to the Harley-Davidson factory squad. Marland Whaley and his Montesa combined for a 38-point score to win the El Trial de Espana in southern California. A surprise second, just four points behind Whaley, was Yamaha-mounted Washington rider Joe Guglielmelli. Northern California's Steve Darrow finished third, followed by Mark Eggar. Result were;n for the fourth annual Laugh-In Trophy Trial, an industry, uh, "happening" at Saddlc:back. Bob Grove and Ken Maely were both listed as winning overall, with Mike Capalite honored for footing the most. Chuck "Feets" Minert took best fourstroke laurels, and Malcolm Smith had the best hillclimb time. Hodaka-mounted Bob Rutten won the 125cc Expert cla s of a CRC motocross at Rawhide Cycle Park, topping runner-up Marcus Phares (Hus). In an RA grand prix event at Indian Dunes, Yamaha rider Jeff Blix ruled the roo t in the 250cc Expert class as he took the win over Penton pilot Tim Davidson and fellow Yamaha rider Randy Stubbs. In the Open Expert class, Bul taco's Ken lahrt was first to the flag, defeating the CZ of Greg Osborne. Phoenix, Arizona, was the site of a major minicycle race. The 80cc Expert class featured a battle between Shawn Kelly of Texas and Gene McCay of Tennessee, with the Lone Star State rider finally winning. Brad Roberts won the I()()cc Expert class. OF AMERICA Yamaha rider Steve Kirk was first overall and first Open Expert as he won a CRC hare scrambles in the California desert. CMC hosted a half mile and TT combo at Ascot Park, and David Aldana took his BulLaco to an easy half mile win.
