was out and Hal worked by the lights of my van until 6:30 p.m. to fix the bike. Thanks to Hal's kindness and expertise I was able to finish B to V. EDMAZENKO Long Beach, CA Gas-oil ratio blues In the December 14 issue, Mr. R.C. I Carter gives his chart for gas-oil ratios. Are you sure this is correct? If the chart is right that means when I use my l2-ounce bottle of Golden Spectro to five gallons of gas, I'm mixing over 50: l? I thought I was mixing about 32: 1. My owners manual says use 20: I, which means I would have to use 32 ounces for five gallons. I've ridden for over 30 years and I've never mix.ed that much oil to gas before. Please, ei ther retract rhe chart or tell me I'm full of crap. GLENN L. SNODGRASS Chartsworth, CA WEST America's weekly motorcycle newspaper Sharon Clayton. Publisher Caroline Gendry. Executive Secretary 10 the Publisher Nancy Danger, Advertising/Editorial Assistant. Editorial Dale Brown, Senior EdiLOr. Lance Bry- son, Editor. DavLd Edwards, Editor.Kit Palmer. Editor. . We don't quite know how you arrived at your figures Mr. Snodgrass, but Mr. Carter's chart is right. If you'remixing 12 ounces of oil to five gallons of gas, you find the gas-oil ratio by dividz'ng the number of ounces in five gallons (640) by the amount of oil used. In your case that equals 53.3, . for a gas-to-oil ratio of 53.3:1, not 32:1 as you thought ...Editor. Advertising Skip johnson. National Sales Manager. Terry Prall, Sales Manager. Brotherly love More in '84 Looking back on the '83 speedway season, I feel a thank you is on order to the people who not only made the season possible, but enjoyable. Those people are the speedway promotors, riders, officials, track personnel, photographers, sponsors, supporters and, of course, the spectators. Also. a special thanks to Cyete News for your great speedway.coverage. Although I did not achieve all my '83 racing goals, I must admit just dealing with all .these people was reward enough. And I'm looking forward to "more in '84." EDDIE MARSHALL· Alhambra, CA Trials and tribulations A few years ago, I owned and rode an Ossa Plunker, Bultaco Alpina, Montesa Cota and the last model Suzuki trials bike made. I've been enjoying Len Weed's trials articles in Cycle News and also his book on trials. But I have yet to find a dealership within 50 miles that sells trials bikes, and that includes Oakland, Contra Costa and Sacramento. I have also just received word from the local Yamaha and Honda dealers after their '84 dealer shows - no trials bikes for the U.S. I wonder if anyone out there could give me some help in finding a trials club. There are a lot of guys out here who would like to start trials again or become first-timers. LARRY RAUSSA 3140 Browns Valley Rd. Napa, CA 94558 See you next year I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the 1983 AFM and ARRA road racing champions. You guys really worked hard all year for the little bit of recognition and glory that a winning effort affor?s you. It hasn't been the best of years LD the road racing scene; we have lost a lot of friends and have had many seriously injured. They won't be soon torgotten by those of us who knew them or by those who only knew them vicariously. But it certainly hasn't been the worst of years either. We've watched quite a few new talents emerge and some of the seasoned veterans still out there putting on a great show. Even though club racers don't always get the recognition that a national star garners, I would sull like all of you to know that every one of you - even the guys who finish at the back of the pack .:.... are a pprecia ted by myself and many others who admire your skill, patience and perserverance in completing even one year of a racing season with all of the factors that can be against you. And even though space doesn't always permit everyone to get mentioned in the race reports, I would like to thank all of you for a lot of good Sundays and, hopefully, a lot ~ore next year. LORI TYSON Anaheim, CA Kopecky says thank you I would like to publicly thank Earl Smith and David James of the American Road Racing Association for a job well done. The entire ARRA staff did a superb job handling their 1983 road race series. Thanks also to those who helped me throughout 1983: Steve, Mel and Glenn at San Diego Kawasaki West for their outstanding service and parts departments; Keith, Judy and Richard at the California Superbike School; Kopecky Corp. Charter Buses for handling an transportation needs; Sue, Steve, "DD" and Jenny for their assistance; and, as always, Mom and Dad! Best wishes to all for a happy and safe 1984. KENNY KOPECKY JR. San Diego, CA Good guy at B to V Let's hear it for the good guys! Hal Track and Travel, a Maico dealer in Pasadena, made Barstow to Vegas possible for one enduro rider. At the start line the day before the race, I was having problems with my bike so at 2:30 p.m. - I called Hal. On hearing what happened, Hal replied, "Bring it down and I'll stay as long as we need to fix it". When I finally arrived at the shop the power In regard to Mr. Larry L. Patterson's comment on Gary and Hank Scott allegedly beating up Bill Werner: Talk about digging up snails! You shouldn't voice an opinion on something you know nothing about. In the first place, Gary has never needed my help in a fight! Bill Werner knows the truth, as does God. The whole of the situation is Gary feels that Randy, as a champion, had a better choice of words that he could have used. I will not say who's right or wrong. that's not what I was put here for. But if Mr. Patterson and Mr. John Evers are dead set on digging up a can of worms, then let them go fishing. HANK SCOTT Findlay,OH Veteran road racer says... i hope everyone learned something this year. My grandfather told me each lesson learned has its price some inexpensive, others more dear. P.R.O. is in its infancy and will succeed if we, as racers, unite. Thanks to Ed Mullineaux for the initial footwork. Now, we must carry the ball. When we speak as one, we will be heard. 1983 brought a new sponsor.in Champion Honda of Charleston, Sou th Carolina, to my racing program and I thank them. Thanks also to Castrol, Bell, Champion Spark Plugs, arul Perron Leathers for theircontinued suppon. Happy Holidays to all. See ya at Daytona! RICHARD CHAMBERS Spottswood, VA For those readers who don't know, P.R.O. (Professional Riders Organization) is a group, started by Mullineaux, Roberto Pietri and Wes Cooley this year, that strives for improvements in road racing. We'll print an interview soon with Cooley in which he discusses P.R.O ....Editor. Published letters do not necessarily reflect the position of Cycle News. Inc. Send I'etters to Voices. Box 498.
