Dallas winner Terry Poovey sends a stream of bubbly skyward as thirdplace Ronnie Jones and Miss Harley-Davidson Regina Smith look on. Poovey takes the checkered flag for a victory lap to celebrate his win. Poovey benefited from then-leader Bubba Shobert's fall in the early laps. Dan Ingram set fast qualifying time but had trouble in the heat races. He made amends by winning the trophy dash-good for a check and a kiss. Poovey pulls his gloves on prior to the start of the main. Seven National numbers made it through the combined-class field to make the main event. Great American Shootout: Round 1 by as he got restarted in last place. With Miskovsky leading followed by Herndon and Kenny Tolbert, Carr put on a spectacular show from last by passing J.R. Rawls, then picking 0[[ Johnny Johnson, then Dodd Dyson. He still had to settle for a fifth place, with Miskovsky, Herndon and Tolbert in the lead at the finish. Semi two saw Dan Ingram briefly in the lead, by Bubba Shobert grabbed it down the back stretch, with Bubba Ru h in third. Two big battles then began - Ingram worked hard on Shobert, and way back, Sammy Potter and Craig Louis fought it out to the finish - with the final tally reading Shobert, Rush, Ingram, Phil Culver, and Potter. In the third semi, it was Poovey, Rusty Gourley, and Duane Duvall all the way as Ricky Graham fell early in the race. In semi number four, Garth Brow grabbed the lead in turn one, followed by Ronnie Jones, with Charlie Orr and Scott Adams battling for third throughout the race. The top three at the checkered flag were Brow, Jones and Adams. The trophy dash was probably the biggest slam-bang thriller of the night since it was Ricky Graham's last chance to make any money for the night. Ingram, Brow, Carr and Graham got off to a quick start, with Brow imo turn one first as Graham Poovey big man in Big D By Frank Harrison DALLAS, TX, OV.18 With $5000 up for grabs, a field of 12 Novices, 19 Juniors and 21 Experts, including 10 National numbers lined up before an enthusiastic crowd at Dallas' Reunion Arena. As they did the Mike Kidd-promoted Great American Shootout series got undeway tonight, with Kidd's former teammate 10 and fellow Texan Terry Poovey sliding to the win on the slick concrete floor of the arena. Time trials came first and when the clocks had stopped ticking, it was Indiana's Dan Ingram taking the top run. Behind him were Garth Brow, O1ris Carr and Ricky Graham. Heat races clicked off almost without a hitch, with fast and close finishes won respectively by Dan Ingram, Garth Brow, Chris Carr, Ricky Gra- ham, Ronnie Jones, Billy Herndon, Terry Poovey and Bubba Shobert. The thriller heat of the night was heat number seven, where Terry Poovey took the lead after a restart. A fourway battle between Poovey, Kenney Larkin, Danny Huffman and Dan Bennett ensued, with the riders going through several turns handlebar to handlebar until Larkin went down, leaving Poovey comfortably out front. Semi number one got off to a sizzling start, with previous Reunion winner Chris Carr grabbing the holeshot followed by Rusty Miskovski. and Billy Herndon. Carr slid out in turn fOUT and watched everyon pass careened into the hay bales against the wall, uninjured but out for the night. Then Chris Carr went down in tUTn three, leaving the battle to Ingram and Brow, with fast qualfier Ingram grabbing the flag and the kiss from Miss Harley Davidson, the soon-to-be-wife of Ricky Graham. Graham just didn't have a good night at all. The main event lineup was something, with no less than seven National numbers on the grid. It was one of the Texas favorites, Bubba Shobert, quickly into turn one at the start, followed by Ronnie Jones and Terry Poovey, with Rusty Miskovsky and Garth Brow following down the backstretch. Bad luck for Shobert, however, as he went down, leaving the lead to Poovey, who then set sail. Brow and Rusty Gourley then zapped Miskovsky as Jones challenged Poovey. The challenge only made Poovey run a little faster. Down to a thrilling finish, it was still Poovey, Jones and Brow wheel to wheel.
