only one loop rider to zero the 31mile event, losing 30 seconds. Going
down to the wire, the battle in the
Mini A class is still tight. Scott Bristol finished fourth overall behind
Mini A Mike Chamberlain Jr. and
250cc C-16 Gregory Snyder.
Behind the once-famous Charlie's
Place and into the Spangler Mountains, loop two was started. The riders ·traveled a long distance, about 15
miles, before the first check was encountered. The special test for loop
two was also puzzling. The check-in
was at 29.4 miles, almost the end of
the loop! The check-out was the last
check of the loop for this 36 mph
section. Three riders were only seven
seconds apart for the overall win.
Grass lost one point and 81 seconds
to top Whelden (1.86) and third-place
finisher Kendall Baillie (1.88). In the
hotly contested Women'sAranks the
season championship is going down
to the wire. Shauna Hopkins picked
up her second win in a row, dropping
2.132. Kawasaki of Pasadena's Kathy
Herndon was second, losing 2.144.
The first nine miles of loops one
and three were the same course with
loop three branching off into the
sand hills. At 10.4 the special test
started and started hard at 42 mph.
This fast speed only lasted for seventenths of a mile and then remained a
still-fast 36 mph for a little over five
miles. Sandwiched in the special test
was one of those downhills that at the
top you cannot see the middle of the
hill. At the top of the virgin downhill
was a sign that read, "What goes up
must come down!" This one was a
real elevator ride with the check-out
for the test at the bottom.
Sampson's unbelievable score of 28
seconds for the 84 miles was one of
the best cores in a long time. But
watch out! Ex-desert racer Wiechmann is a missile. Just learning to
keep time, Wiechmann lost an impressive 46 seconds, one of only two zeros,
for the day. Following Sampson and
Wiechmann were AA riders Rick
Daniel (1.47), Everett Angle (.172)
and Randy Daugherty (1.79). Todd
