Jones, Forkner take Circle W honors By Sharon Jones HEPLER, KS, NOV. 5 . Most of the Experts ended their practice session at The Circle W motocross with smiles on their faces, perhaps looking forward to a 150 percent payback at the end of the day. When the racing was over, though, Brad Jones' smile was the brightest as he not only won the 250cc Expert race, but managed a win on the Open side of the program as well. tan Emer on took the stan of the 250cc Expens and led for the entire molO. Doug Martin hounded Emerson throughout the race and attempted some unsuccessful last-lap passes. Emerson got the checkered, one second in front ofManin.lmermediate rider Steve Forkner decided lO see how fast the Experts really were. Although not racing for points or money, Forkner managed lO finish a distant third. In the second molO, Forkner put his Suzuki into the lead, with Brad Jones in second. Forkner missed a berm and Jones zipped past. Manin soon displaced Forkner and the two front-runners began to pull away from the pack. Meanwhile, first-round winner Emerson was having problems back in fifth. Jones put some distance on Manin at the midway poim, but Martin closed the gap 9n the last lap. Martin almost passed Jones, but Jones wem wide and shut the door. Results BD BEG: 1. Jason Aday; 2. Jeremy Malloy; 3. Tracy Harmon. 80 SR: 1. Craig Storck; 2. Jason Jarrett; 3. Ricky MOiler. BEG: ,. Carothers blasts to Austin gold By Joe Milian AUSTIN, TX, NOV. 6 The GNC state championship at Rio Bravo in Houston was rained out earlier today and many of the competing riders left the muddy mess behind and journeyed to Austin MOlO Spon Park to r:are Uftderi~rfecr-comtiti.c~,,-s.·.'- " • Hunter Carothers lOpped a combined Expert class, taking the overall win ahead of San Antonio's Kevin Horton. Honon put in a professional effort, leading Carother and Brian Lambert for most of the first molO. Jerry Farmer, who had collided with Billy Kelly earlier in the heat, rode from well back Lambert with slightly more than a lap remaining. About the same time, Carothers turned up the boost on his YZ250 and went tearing past Horton inlO the lead. A trip over the big berm at the east end of the track by Carothers tightened things up over the course of the final 75 yards but he prevailed by a slim margin over Horton with Farmer gaining in third. Moto number two turned into a practice session for Carothers as he cruis~d away from a three-bike pileup in the first turn and compiled such a 'huge lead he had to be tracked on radar. Bill Kelly rode as far and as fast as he could on his YZI25 but the high-speed layout put his small-bore machine at a disadvantage and he was overtaken by Farmer, Lambert, and Tello just past the half-way point. Carothers was so far in front at the flag he could have loaded up and collected his money before the rest of the field crossed the line. Results MINI JR: 1. Tim Hodes (Kaw); 2. Ross on a roll at Austin MX By Joe Milian AUSTIN, TX, NOV. 4 A rain-shortened program dampened the spirits of some tonight at Austin Mow Sport Park but enthusiasm ran high in the 250cc Beginner class, where Jon B. Ross established his supremacy over a fuJI field of contestants in some of the closest racing of the evening. Ross won the first maLO rather handily after scoring the holeshot and riding steadily away from the assembled throng. Sam Mabry and Kelly Neel made a futile effort to keep Ross (rom running away with the win but were unable LO deter the Suzuki pilot from making his way lO the checkered flag in first place. David SLOne took a spectacular header in front of the scoring tower on lap. three that left him dazed but otherwise unhurt. MOlO two found Ross with a muddy problem on his hands as Wilbur Hack and Mitchell Carpenter's collision caused hi'm to delOur into some of the slop that had been cleaned from the track earlier in the afternoon after the early November monsoon had subsided. To make a lung, slippery story short, Ross managed to paddle his way back up to second position before the termination of the heat and lay claim lO first overall. ~l?P4-/9YQ'ljwinner Sam Mjlbry b~Q' the misfortune to become slime-bound in the initial going and his 12-1 score_ put him well back in the final standlng'S. Once again the l25cc Novice class found Robert Tiemann and Shawn Clevenger squaring off in what has become a weekly feature whose ending eems lO change with each new encounter. A (amiliar scenario unfolded this evening, with each of the two combatants winning a moLO and making an appearance in the runnerup spot. Tiemann won the opening meeting without much of a challenge from Clevenger, who was soningout a newlv reconditioned mount. Clevenger 'obviously made the right adjustments LO his machine during the break, since he won the second molO in much the same manner in which Tiemann won the first. That gave Clevenger the overall victory, with Tiemann second and Noah McClel-' Ian wresting third place away from Glen Dial by virtue of some last-lap heroics in the concluding go-round. With the lack of an Open class, Craft rode a 480 Honda to victory, grabbing both holeshots and taking both molOS. It was a stunning display by the slight-ofbuild youngster. "Steady Eddie", only 14 years old, and until now a Minibike rider, had not raced recently. And other than the holesholS, his big-bore bike would not make much difference on this fairly tight track. Craft cruised in the lead on each lap holding off the likes of Tony Lasater and Charlie Davison, who finished second and third, respectively. Craft steered to the overall honors with a superlative show, . virtually unchallenged. Lasater, as he did in the 250cc Novice class, was running in second place, where he would finish. Third went lO Suzuki-mounted Steve Page. In the Expert class, good head-tohead action between Honda pilots Monty Bland and Bo Stegall provided crowd pleasing excitement. The battle was interrupted in the first confrontation when Bland came around minus a foot-peg at the halfway mark on lap four. Stegall went on to takethewin. Todd Young, ona 125 Yamaha, took over second. Hugh Hagan moved into third. However, Hagan, who had the first molO holeshot, woiJld eventually DNF in molO two. T/1e start of th~ second moto saw Bland charge imo the lead. Stegall settled in behind Bland. Hagan was third with Young fourth. On lap two Young moved ahead of Hagan. Bland would command the lead lO the end. Stegall in second, coupled with his first-molO win, took class honors. Results 250 EXP: 1. Bo sttl1lall lHon); 2. Monty B.. nd (Hon); 3. Todd Voung (Yam). Orr BOYD, TX, OCT. 29 Todd Haas, sponsored on a Honda by his father and the Low Buck Racing Team, showed the 250cc Juniors home on the shon track, while Bill Herndon rode a Shirley Huston-sponsored Honda to the win in the Open Senior TT at Mike Kidd's Hillside Raceway on a beautiful, mild OClOber night. Willie McCoy took his Bates Cycles Honda to the checkert;:d flag ahead of the Yamahas of Tommy Brooks and Alan Powers in the first 250cc Junior shon track heat race. Haas won the second head, followed by Yamaha rider Jack Yost and David Best's Harley Sprint. McCoy had the pole position for the start of the main, with Haas lined up next to him while Yost took rhe outside pole. Haas got the h6leshot inlO the first corner, but all three riders came out of the number two turn side by side. McCoy pulled a slight lead down the back stretch, with Haas right behind him and Yost in third place. McCoy bobbled in the number two corner on lap two but recovered to hold the lead until he crashed coming out of the same turn on lap five and went down hard. Haas just missed the downed rider and took over the lead, still followed closely by Yost, with Brooks in third place and Rocky Fivecoat in fourth. McCoy was back into the race after being lapped by the two leaders. Haas lOok the flag with Yost in second. • Results sT TROPHV DASH: 1. Terry Poovey (Han); 2. Bill Herndon (Hon). 50: ,.
