Holt, Huffman hot
at Clarks Branch
Winter MX
By Clay and Suanne Light
ROSEBURG, OR, OCT. 30
Yamaha-supported Ted Holt
wtally dominaied both motos
of the 12Scc Pro class at the
Clarks Branch Wimer AMA motocross series opener in Roseburg.
Holt made the 200-mile trek pay oH
by using the National experience
which he gained this past season in
making the top 20 at the l25cc season
opener. Ashland's Randy Toreson
put his Honda into the Open Pro
winner's circle by burning both Open
motos, while young Ryan HuHman
continued to dominate the smallwheel racing by taking rour motos in
the Mini Junior and Pee Wee Intermediate classes on a showery day or
racing in southern Oregon.
In the rirst 125cc Pro moto, Holt
hooked up into the soup on his
YZI25 through the water-lined
whoop-de-doos to head up some rierce
action that was rorming rrom behind
in the rorm of some class southern
Oregon riders. JeH Martin and local
Steve Nelson put their mounts in
second and third until Toreson put a
pass on both. Toreson couldn't catch
Holl, who has won every moLO each
time he has made an appearance
down this way in the regular season.
Holt took a convincingly wire-towire over Toreson, Nelson and Marlin at the nag.
Moto two had Holt hammer his
way into the lead coming through
the sparsely wooded uphill and then
down the long, long Washougalstyle downhill. Holt held on for a
double-moto blitz while Martin
copped a second, which was good ror
second loot over Nelson, who carded
a 2-3 third.
The Pee-Wees provided some dirIerent-dispfays or maneuvering'
to
keep themselves upright in the soup.
Local rider Huffman put his HuHman/Wright Logging Yamaha into
the lead while Craig Reynard, Shawn
Highland and Jason Mathews rollowed in the first moto. HuHman has
been dominating the area in the Pee
Wee classes ror the past two years and
has finally moved up to the Mini
rank as well.
The second moto Joie DePew stay
upright long enough to take second
place at the rinish behind Huffman,
who collected a double demolition
award ror winning both outings. DePew DNF the rirst moLO but still
ended up second overall because or
Reynard's second-moLO DNF.
Keith Nicholson grand-slammed
both 250cc Junior/Intermediate motos, which were combined. Nicholson's Suzuki sailed out rront in a lead
that would never be touched by his
Junior comrades. The Junior portion or the race was controlled by
Klamath Falls riders Dennis Rotherham and Donald Milligan. Rotherham rollowed Nicholson all the way
to the nag in the rirst moto but ended
up getting the short end or the stick
with a second in moLO two, being
snuUed by Milligan. Rotherham's I2 was good enough to take the Junior
laurels behind Nicholson' perrect
I-I.

'Team Bowman'
claims family
enduro treats
By Jim Bowman
REDDING, CA, OCT. 30
Jim and Carol Bowman finished first in each of their classes
and first Husband/Wife team at
the Redding Dirt riders Trick
or Treat Family Enduro today. Jim
won the A-B overall arter dropping
seven points in the special test and 22
by burning the finish check. Carol
won the overall without losing a single late point, but collected 39 penalty
points for being early and burning
two checks.
Burning checks was about as common today as the rain drops that rell
throughout the event. Without route
sheets, riders were rorced to keep lime
in their heads and search ror the
speed changes posted on the trail.
Jon King(45 points) and Joe Weinert
(50) were second and third in the AB class, respectively, and also lost
more points for being early than [or
being late. Chuck Elderton (Open C,
50), Sean Dunbar (200cc C, 62), Dave
Bryant (OT C, 67) and Alan Fitch,
(250cc C, 92) were the C class winners.
But this was a ramily enduro and
the real stars were people like grandmother Jaunice Partridge who rode
with son Elmer and grandson I;:rnie
in the misty mountain rain. Peggy
Nichols and Judy Long also rode and
placed second and third, respectively,
in the Powder Puff class behind Bow-
man. Erin Cio had the distinction of
placing second Husband/Wife team
with husband Peter, and third Husband/Wife team honors went to Linda
and Bill Dan.
Ma on Harrison may not have
earned a trophy this year, but he did
come away as the youngest rider, at 6
years old, to give it a try. Mason was
entered in the junior class (12 and
under), which was won by Paul Cameron with the low score or 120 points.
Charles Wolf( (J24) and Mason
Haynes (177) placed second and third.,
while the older Senior/junior class
(13-17) riders turned in lower scores.
Sean Elderton scored 50 points to win
the Senior/Junior class as well as the
Parent/Child team trophy with dad
Chuck. Scott Taylor (78) and john
Be1l Jr. (88) rounded out the top three
in the Senior/Junior class.
