Wi By Shirley Upp LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, NOV. 6 Husky-mounted Dan Ashcraft was unchallenged after taking an early lead to take the overall win in the SoCal Motorcycle Club's ~9th annual hare and hound. After Ashcraft and partner Dan Smith won the SCORE Baja 1000 on Saturday, Ashcraft loaded up and headed for Lucerne to see if his good luck would hold out. SoCal had a tough and challenging course laid out with a lotofvirgingroundon the When the banner dropped for the Amateur/Expert, Ashcraft kicked once and his big Husky was on the move. At the bomb it was Ashcraft followed by Chris Crandall, back after being away from the desert for a couple months. Ashcraft took a wide tum and CrandaB and his Honda grabbed the lead as they headed into some tight terrain. Up with the front runners was Gary Charters at third, leading the 250cc Vet class. The first loop took a lotof concentration to stay on the course. Ashcraft had regained the lead about 10 miles into the loop and he had a lead ohwo minutes and 12 seconds on Crandall at its end. Charters was still in third, knowing that with a first in class he . would have the number one plate in C BEG: 1. T. Sponooller; 2. R. Shelley; 3 MocCloud. VET OP EX: 1. D. Grent; 2. W. Sellzmen; 3. Ron Sh uler was having another super ride as he came through at fifth. Leading the 250cc class was Amateur Ed Ogden at sixth overall. Tom Elias had a nice lead in the C bike class at seventh, but the luck wouldn't hold for Elias, and not far into the second loop the front wheel bearings gave out and dropped him to ~4th overall. In the Novice race Dan DalLon had his 250 Honda out in front. Dalton was having a rough ride today as he blew his fork seals before the start. It wasn't slowing him much as he hada nice lead built up. Running second was C bike rider Gary Covington on his 125 Yamaha. Mike Dyott, came through at third overall Novice and was leading the Open Senior Novice class. Coming into the finish the riders had to work their way down a rocky, steep. twisty hill. Fun fOf the specta: tors but no problem at all for a Pro like Ashcraft as he made his way down it with ease. With his second win in as many days, Ashcraft was glad to see the finish. Very tired and with sore blistered hands his first comment was, ''I'm glad Dan Smith didn't show up for this one'" Taking second was Crandall. Charters held his third place and first in the 250cc Vet class. With this win Charters garnered his second of his number one plates. Scheffers, who bad led the bomb run, stayed up Iront to take fourth overall today. Fifth was 250cc Amateur Ed Ogden who had recovered nicely from a bad start only to get lost for awhile with Shuler and Sche[fers. After finding the course he really turned on the gas. Shuler came in for a sixth after another of his outstanding rides. In for second 250cc at seventh overall was Tim Sinclair. Phil Cloward took eighth overall and said his new shock might have helped his 490 Yamaha give him a better ride. Ninth was Montclair Yamaha rider Mike "Downhill" Alexander who was one of the many riders who tried to remove some rocks - the rock didn't move but Alexander was removed from his bike for awhile. Rounding out the top 10 was John Rudder. Doug Grant thought the course was great as he was able to move up to take a first in the Open Vet class. In the C bike race Duane Summers on his Cagiva took the win. jim Bringhurst took a well-earned win in the 250cc Senior class. In the Novice race Dalton stayedin for the overall win. OCT. ~o The Tank Slappers' Wild Wi:y ard Chase ended with everyon chasing Kerney Mesa Yamaha's Robbie Nolan and his hot YZ250 through all four loops of the. S5-mile hare and hound. Nolan styled it all the way, with no one getting close enough to pass after he grabbed the lead at the smokebomb. "It wasfast for a desert course," said Nolar. "I got lost near the mud hills and ran about 200 or ~oo yards before I realized it. I burned a U and got back on the course." Noland. who has beerr riding motocross lately, found thatTI,. took a little while to get back his' bearings. You couldn't prove it hy the other riders. who saw nothing but his dust most of the time. Darryl Richardson (Hon) was in that dirt. a short minute off Nolan at the start of the second loop. Vet Ed Munday (Suz) was smoking in third with Ed Foland (Cag) fourth and jeff Benn~ t (Yam) fifth. Halfway through Richardson bailed: "I must have been down longer than I thought," said Richardson, "But I felt okay so I took off again. I laid it down again and then there wa~ no making it up so then, the plan w to finish." Foland moved pasta tirillg Munday for second spot while jack Marner (Yam) out for his first desen race moved into third. Munday hung on like the grand man he is with jamieTucker (Hon) and Bruce Smith (Yam) nipping at his heels. Nolan said he needed to change his gearing but he kept gaining a minute each la~. Smith was also pulling a steady gain. "I got past Foland in the pits," said Smith, "I didn't even know where Marner was because I was concentrating on Tucker. So much in fact that when Tucker went over a drop left of the danger markers I went over right behind him. I lost my visor, tweaked tbe bars a little bu t ca ugh t Foland on the pole line road, on the last lap." Marner, being new, found no one paying much- attention. However, they will next time because he took the Open Novice class and a fifth overall. - Unofficial Results OPEN EX: 1. D. Ashcroft; 2. C. Crendall: 3. L. SchoffeB. OP AM: 1. R. Guenin; 2. C.
