seven to get by hard-charg.ing Wright, but once past it was clear that no one would sLOp EaLOn. Wright finished second, with Hall, Ostriem and Pomeroy taking third through fifth. The 125cc class was definitely an Eric Hall affair as the W.P. Racingl Sun Products-sponsored Honda rider holeshot both moLOS and pulled away LO take the overall by virtue of two first-place finishes. Lynnwood Yamaha's Cory Klaudt was second overall with a 3-2 tally while Ostriern, Brell Tremblay and David Froembling put on some excellent racing taking third through fifth overall. John Christian Jr., and Joe Wright were the main factors in Open today, with Christian pUlling in a fine ride during the first race to catch and pass Wright on the last lap. Wright (Idaho Honda) was not LO be denied the second moLO win, though, and rode an excellent moLO, taking the win and overall. Eric Hall (594) moves past Dennis Ostriem in 250cc Pro action at Horn Rapids. A fim-moto fall left Hall C!ut of the top three overall. Veteran desen ace, Dale Demaris (250 KTM), again won the 250cc Expert dass, only a minute behind Turnidge, with a fantastic ride on a course that had places where the fast riders were doing over 100 mph. Demaris' 250 was not as fast as the Open bikes on thse sections but he made up for it in the tighter sections. This year's only Oregon ISDT rider, Barreu Brown, no sooner got back from Wales and he was off to Oregon's biggest desert races. Brown was just over a minute behind Turnidge and Demaris when he ran (literally) into problems. Perhaps on the lookout for a problem-causing Welch bog, Brown hit one of the many trees on the course, cuuing his nose wide open. Brown didn't let the blood bother him as he held up his pace to finish second Open Expert, third overall and only two minutes behind overall winner Turnidge. Brown left for the hospital as soon as he finished the race. Glenn Wiensz took the200cc Expert class win on his trusty 200 Honda with an amazing 21 st overall on a fast course. Then came Wayne Krug, Jerry Pillar, and Chuck Steahly finishing 25th, 26th, and 27th overall to make the closest racing in any of the classes, and second, third, and fourth in an increasingly tough 200cc Expert class. Edd Price got one of his worst starts in years but kept his Bauman Racing 125 Suzuki screaming as he won the 125cc Expert class, the only small bike to break the top 20, with a 14th overall. Dan Harte was the next I25cc Expert in on his Husky. Results • 26 ~ OVERALL: 1. Brad Turnidge (KTM); 2. Dale Demaris (KTM); 3. Barren Brown (VarnI: 4. Brian Finch (Yam); 5. Bill Do_rs (Husl; 6. Eaton, Hall, Wright score a~ Horn Rapids MX By Brian Barnes RICHLAND, WA, NOV. 6 The eighth race of the 1983 Sun Challenge Series went into the books this weekend with Eric Hall, Eric Eaton and Joe Wright picking up wins in 125,250 and Open classes at the new Horn Rapids ORV Park. It was a rather strange sight as the first moto of 250cc division pulled to the line. Eaton (Hi-Point/Seoul Honda) wa~ not aboard his familiar Maico machine, but on a brand-new 1984 Honda. Owens Yakima Suzukimounted Dennis Ostriem rounded turn one in the lead, with Hall, Kenny New and Wright in tow. Eaton had a poor·start, but by the end of the first lap was slicing through the pack and up to third. About midway through lap two, Hall and Eaton collided, leaving both riders on the ground, but EaLOn remounted in sixth place. Ostriem was riding a strong race up front, with Wright, New and Suzuki-mounted Ron Pomeroy second, third and fourth. Lap five signaled the beginning of Eaton's catchup allempt as the Hi-Point ace picked up the pace, passing all four riders by the ninth lap for the win. Ostriem, Pomeroy, Hall and Wright finished out the top five. The second-mota holes hot looked like it belonged to Hall, but Wright stayed on the gas and flew around the first corner with the lead. Ostriem, Eaton, New and Honda-mounted Ron McQuade followed Wright during lap one while Eaton got past Ostriem on lap two. It tool< Eaton !1!1til lap Results PEE WEE: 1. Eric Wiltz (Yaml; 2. Hearn, Brandt battle at SHR night MX By Jim Bowman BRENTWOOD, CA, OCT. 28 Mark Hearn and Concord Yamaha's JerTy Brandt went head-on in the Open Pro class at Sand Hill Ranch tonight to place first and second, respectively. Hearn won the first moto; Brandt holeshot the second, Hearn passed, then Brandt passed, and the crowd was getting a first-rate show. The show didn't end until the lalle.r pan of !.he maLO when Brandt fell and couldn't regain the lost distance. Good racing was found in the Open Junior class, too, asCyde Gear's Norm Hasenpflug holeshot the first mota, Craig Porter got by, Porter shifted into neutral and Hasenpflug LOok the checkers. Hasenpflug holeshot in the second maLO and was holding a fairly good lead, but slid out in a turn and fell back LO last. Hasenpflug didn't give up, though, and worked his way back up to second behind Porter at the checkers. Erik Showalter was third both motos for third overall. While 125cc Intermediate class win. ner Tyrone Earl rode to his usual position at the end of each mota, I25cc Junior class winner Bob Majors provided a lillIe excitement by beating Intermediate Jim Carrillo in the first mota. Carrillo put a stop to that in the second mota, though, and finished second behind Earl. At the gas SLOp, John Haaker was leading the scores w~th a three-point tally, but Haaker motored his KTM four-stroke into check five just a liule early and lost two additional penalty points for fourth over.all. . The 1983 Jackhammer, which turned outLO be a "time keeper" with two short special tests, paid out a lot of early penalty points LO the riders at the check five check-in to the second test. Jeff Henning wasn't early, though, and finished fifth overall despite the pain in his slowly healing broken arm. Doug Chestnut was the first200cc A rider with a 6-poim, 369 second score, and Jerry Kramer was the first Old Timer A winner, with a 7:272 tally. Aithough the B class picked up a few more points than the A riders, these riders did their own fair share of timekeeping and produced a lot of tied scores. Greg Houle took the overall and 200cc B honors with a 9:375 score that was seconds ahead of the Husky four-stroke of Old Timer B winner Richard Christian. Christian's Richmond Ramblers club buddies Doug Fielding and Ron Roberts carried the four-stroke honors one step further by placing first and second Open B, respectively. with tied seores of 10. Glen Carrillo sellled the 250cc B class dispute with the last 10-pointtally, and there were at least five other riders who tied with II points each. • Unofficial Results OVERALL: 1.
