Saturday's 250cc intermediate/Expert racing was a sight to behold as some of the event's finest racing skills were displayed. Richard Arnold aced his way through the first tum ahead of Ron Pinheiro, Winslow and McLeod. Eric Waddell and Tod Sciacqua tucked in close. Pinheiro ran into some problems while Sciacqua skunked Waddell. Arnold and Winslow self-destructed on the infield. McLeod, maintaining his cool and aggresive style, moved into first, with Waddell and Tim Hanna bumping tires behind. Hanna was anxious as he held his throttle on just a second longer than Waddell to get by. Pinheiro caught the drift also and pressed past Waddell. The moto-one victory went to McLeod, with Hanna, Pinheiro, Winslow and Waddell following. McLeod was pumped for mota two as he dominated all laps. Winslow and Pinheiro weren't quite sure who was the better man as they frantically changed positions. Then all of a sudden, Hanna appeared, bumping Arnold and Sciacqua back a position. Waddell overtook Arnold while Sciacqua dove ahead to set a gap. With the checkers waving for McLeod, Winslow came home second, with Hanna, Sciacqua and Waddell in tow. Overall, the finishing order for the Experts was McLeod, Winslow and Pinheiro, w'hile the Intermediate top three were Hanna, Waddell and Sciacqua. In other action Saturday, John Condon and Jeff Black came out on top of the 125cc combined Intermediate/Expert division. The first moto was lead by Condon, Mike Gosselaar and Black, while Gary Reikki and Rodney Morrison diced not far behind. Gosse1aar pressed past Condon' while Black also moved up. Riekki and Morrison thenOYertOOlc.Qxxkn IntmnediateBlack edged his way past Gosselaar for the lead while Riekki, Morrison and Condon held tight. Out of the blue Condon bumped his way ahead of Morrison and at the finish it was Black, ~~!~¥! ~ie~~i, ~r.d9!l and,M9rI. ) . -( ! I. .f 0 # £-; , II ) rison. Mota two brought forth quite a battle between Condon and Nick Young while John Rudder and Gosselaar kept com pany. The action kept moving as Young overtook Condon, and Gosselaa{ exchanged places with Rudder. Morrison held a firm fifth until lap four, where he surpassed Rudder. Riekki, Black and Jay Lytell maintained their proximity. As the mota moved on, Condon re-grabbed the lead from Young, with Gosselaar, Riekki and Black in sight. Black was itchy as he dove past Riekki for fourth. With minutes remaining, Black moved into third while Tim Hanna styled past Rudder. The top five positions remained as Condon, Young, Black, Riekki and Hanna. When all the sorting out was over, Condon was tops in the Expert side of the program, with Rudder in second and Morrison in third. For. the Intermediates, Black took the gold (plus he com bined overall win), Riekki the silver and Hanna the bronze. On Sunday, Intermediate Phil Taylor styled his way over the start hill in front of the 500cc combined Intermed iate/Expert moto-one gang. Brian Vargus vied a dose second. Vargus made his move while Winslow, Damean "Omen" Webb and Greg Torgerson fought for track space behind. Torgerson and Webb exchanged places while Ron Lewis and Gary Scheidler remained intact. Winslow attempted to pass Vargus on .the infield before the uphill but failed. Torgerson was hot as he roosted past Vargus and Winslow. Webb held his grip on fifth as the top four jammed. Webb then moved closer to Winslow as Vargus, Lewis and Scheidler tightened up. Lewis overtook Vargus while Webb remained a distant fifth due to some interference with a track tire. At the finish it was Torgerson, Winslow, Vargus, Lewis and Webb. Wofford Heights local Winslow dominated the mota-two 500cc scene. Webb, Torgerson and Vargus just couldn't get close enough to'affect a change. Torgerson bumped Webb to a battle with Vargus. Then, Torgerson misjudged a turn. Webb moved back into second as Scheidler and Hanna crested the hill. It was poetry in motion as the duo was reapproached by Torgerson. Torgerson pressed past Hanna while Scheidler held him off. On the white-flag lap Torgerson dove past Scheidler. Midlap, Torgerson flew around Webb, and the checkers waved for Winslow, Torgerson, "Omen" and Scheidler. ~ } ~ • J J. Tumidge controls High Desert 100 By Kathi Davis BEND, OR, OCT. 23 Brad Turnidge grabbed the lead of the High Desert 100 from Rich Bozarth at the 25-mile gas check and controlled the race to the end. Yamaha 490 rider Bozarth had the lead at the smokebomb, with Turnidge, aboard a 495 KTM, running about 15th. Afterthe long bomb run, Turnidge passed everyone but Bozarth in the next couple of miles and the two of them rode within feet of each other until they reached the gas check. Turnidge and Bozarth stopped for gas at the same time, but Turnidge got out first, with Bozarth right behind. The course headed into the mountains with tight trails through the trees. The race was all but decided there as Bozarth overshot a turn while chasing Turnidge and smashed his exhaust pipe on a tree, which caused his bike to lose practically all its power and eventually caused him to drop out. Turnidge kept upnis pace to make the Open Expert win and first overall without even a hinL of a crash and averaging more than 50 mph. II II '.' , 1 ~ • 2.5
