RnalPro-Am TT of the year at Ascot By Maureen Lee GARDENA, CA, OCT. 21 Riders rode on a superb track using the long course for the last running of the AMA's ProAm program. The extra good 30 news is that it turned out so well, due to the efforts of Ed CarrolJ and the Dirt Diggers M.C., that the AMA has OK'd it for next year. So, you local riders, by your support you've gotten this thing off the ground. Some strange things happened, must have been last race jitters or the full moon, but the 500cc Pro class turned into a howl. Ross Klatt tore 'em up in the qualifying heat with some .!Iw{ul-good riding going on behind him between Greg Nelson and John Lundgren, but at the end Ross was nine-seconds ahead of the second-place man. Come the main, and the last race of the night, things started happening. Lundgren fell off in the first turn and Jimmie Rosa with no place to go bumped over him. Dusted off they returned to the line. Off they went again, this time Rosa feU and another red flag. On both of these times it was Ross Klatt that had led 'em all off the line and into turn one first. Again they shot off, Klatt in the lead until they aU got around one lap, and you guessed it, Rosa fell off in the same spot. Only he didn't get a flag and had to remount a!ld go riding after. What this youngster did is most mentionable. Each lap he kept dropping his lap times and, one by one, the other riders were dropping out like Rosa, who was blackflagged be· Ross was still closing on Lundgren, he passed Greg Nelson; on the white lap he was only thr~-secondsdown and came across the finish line just 1.62 seconds behind Greg. He had made up 15 seconds in three laps. Paste this in your scrapbook, Ross. The 250cc Pros were large in number (another money purse up north had drawn some ofour stawarts away), Don Drigg won the qualifier and shot off with the lead in the main after another res(art when Don. Driggs and Dave Ehrhart sort of came to grief in the first turn. Greg Beloit slid on around Driggs to take the lead for a bit followed by Driggs, Vince Landry and Ehrhart. Landry really looked good and he picked them off carefully to win the class. At the very end Driggs, who was running fourth, got bug-eyed sliding out on the entrance to the back chute; losing some power in the process and nearly losing his spot to Ehrhart, who took full advantage of the opportunity. Results in next week'. Results column Giffin crowned Champion Budweiser Summer Series By Tom Griffith VALENCIA, CA, OCT. 21 The I3-race Budweiser Summer Series number 10 became history tonight at Indian Dunes Cycle Park. Ameri- can Motocross Enterprises '. President, Jerry Shore, pumped up the riders for the season finale and announced A.M.E.'s intent to promote number 11 in 1984. But not until the final checker after race three, did we know Guy Giffin, aboard his C R F/Richter eause'Of~aHunctiOiJiil~oequipJriomt~ • Prmtteer-Honda: would bethe&ries • ; winningest rider and 1983 Champ. Giffin assumed the lead of the hotly contested 125cc Junior class battle but had to contend with number two in the series standings, Team Psycbo'sPaulThompson. Thompson kept the pressure so intense a slight bobble at the end of the moto one, let Suzuki Van Nuys rider Barry Kau slip into second. Having to settle for third, Thompson had a lot of work to do in moto two if he was to pass Giffin for the title. Moto two got off to a bang leaving three riders on Start Hill, but Giffin began where he finished moto one - in first. Charging throughout the second go, Paul thought he could see daylight to pass Giffin but was shut down and he had to remain in second. At the checker, Dave managed toputhis RMI25 into third ahead of Kau. But the overall positions went to Giffin, Thompson and Kau. Hearty congrats to Series number one and number two, both 125cc Juniors, Giffin and Thompson. With the.final point still unofficial at press-time, it appears number three and four will be 500cc Junior riders David Rosen and Jeff Otten; not surprising for these two hot shoes. But number five looks to go to oneof tomorrows stars, Pee Wee sensation Jeff Willoh. Willoh and Pat Wade have been pushing each other around the Southern California tracks all season and have remained first or second in most of the Series' races. ·Pat Wade has tried Yamaha, Italjet and Honda mounts in his quest to be the Pee Wee Champ and should be very proud of his accomplishments as number two in' class.
