The V.c.T.E. course was considered easy by many riders.
Reynold Hicklin shortened the loop
(by eliminating the ridge route) and
aimed for moderate section di££iculty.
It worked. Numerous sure-was-afun-trial comments £lowed throughout the afternoon as riders tacked 14
sections three times. A glance at the
winning scores in the four major
classes - 31 ,33,32 and 37 - indicates the section-makers' consistency
at hitting their target.
But while VOTE was downplaying the tricker sections, the weekend
was not without a share of mischief
by a mysterious section-eater. Four
sections marked the weekend before
completely vanished stakes, cards,
ribbon, everything. They were replaced the day before the event.
A possible Expert battle between
Webb and Dwaine Walters, National
number four, failed to materialize.
Walters, who had already clinched
the ATA championship, skipped the
event.
ATA president Mike Lauxen lost
out to Expert runner-up Neil Belvoir
(pronounced beaver) on cleans. Both
riders tied with 51 points.
Chip Chapman (Fan) made it three
P.I.T.S. riders in the top four. The
former 125cc Pro motocrosser dropped
58 points, but still managed to tie
released most cleans in the class, 17.
Kevin Norton (SWM) topped the
Amateurs by 25 points. Winner of all
five starts in this year's state championship series, Kevin earned enough
transfer points to move up to Expert
just in time for the year's most punishing events, the December 10-11
Schreiber Cup and EI Trial de Espana.
Scott Annand took his Bay Area
Cycle Center Honda to second place.
Scott was aboard the brand new 200
released overseas earlier this year.
The 200 is based on the bike ridden by
K;iyoteru Hattori in the world championship series.
Don Buxton, a retired Expert on
the comback trail, had one of those
good-news-bad-news days. Good
news: he finished third. Bad news: he
lost a $100 watch on the loop.
Mat Bishop gave the NorCal riders
their second first-place trophy of the
day, topping Tim Walkes for Novice
honors by four points. Section One's
Bob Miller labels Mat, JUSt 14, as a
keep-your-eye-on-this-one comer.
Doug Mcintosh finished third, edging Joe Fasola by a point.
Greg Bush scored a four-point victory in the Beginners class. Runnerup Mark Larsen"s 41 was JUSt en'ough '
