Klein clobbers Minis at DeAnza MX By Michael Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, ocr. 2'3 The 80cc Beginner class watched from behind as Pomona Valley Kawasaki rider Wesley Klein piloted his 1984 KX60 to 20 runaway wins in both motos o[ DeAnza's weekly motocross. Larry Laye (Kaw) holeshotthe first moto with Klein and Quality Auto Upholstery's Ernie Yanez (Yam) in hot pursuit. By the end o[ the first lap, Klein had blasted by Laye and was building a comfortable lead. Yanez was having engine troubles and dropped to fourth on lap two. This put Laye in the sights of the third-place rider Pete Starman (Kaw), who immediately picked up the pace. On lap [our, Klein started working on the Mini Novice riders while Starman began to put some serious pressure on Laye. Yanez dropped out o[ the race on lap five with dirt in his carburetor, giving fourth place to Sunwest Yamaha's David Tangle. On the last lap, Starman passed Laye [or second after an intense two-lap dice, making the order Klein first, and Starman and Laye second and third respectively. Moto two saw Klein once again roost immediately to a comfortable lead over the bigger machines. Yanez was holding his newly cleaned carburetor wide open to run a strong second place. Tangle was running third with Starman and Laye battling for fourth close behind. Tangle crashed on lap three, while Laye was also having problems which dropped him to fifth. Starman got on the gas and caught Yanez on the fifth lap. Yanez was doing a fine job of holding Starman of[. but the Kawasaki pilot got by on the second to last lap to clinch second. Klein cruised across the finish line first with a happy sponsor to greet him. Starman's 2-2 tally netted him second overall, while Laye's 3-5 gave him third. Results PEE WEE: ,. Lee Ford (Vim); 2. There were some special speaators attoday's event, one was 1982 Supercross and 250cc National Champion Donnie Hansen, and the other was 1982 250cc World Champion Danny LaPorte. Hansen, while not cheering on his racing friends, was breaking in a new 1984 Open bike. Both men were surrounded by fans all day. There was considerable action in the 250cc Pro class when Mike Shoemaker, who was back on the track after being sidelined with inj uries. In his first moto "The Shoe," aboard a friend's practice bike, moved up through a pack of 250cc machines to lead the field across the (inish line. Yamaha riders, Erin Buskirk and Russ Wageman finished second and third. When their mounts broke out of the gate for the final 250cc Pro moto, it was former Mini ace Zoli Meszaros edging his Yamaha out front. Meszaros held Buskirk and Jon Ortner to second and third respeaively. The trio held back Shoemaker, Wageman and a field of seasoned Pros. "The Shoe" was breathing fire! Shoemaker worked his way up to the front line after a rough start. By the halfway mark, Shoemaker galloped into the lead witl1 Meszaros holding firmly to second. For Wageman it was a day fraught with disappointment. His machine, backfiring, coasted back to the pits. When the finish line came into his sights, Shoemaker breezed on home (or a back-to-back win followed by Meszaros in second. Buskirk's 2-3 tally brought him second-place loot and Ortner's 5-4 ride nelled him thirdplace gold. Results PEE WEE: 1. Jeff Willoh (Yam); 2. Brld Schultz (Vam); 3. "'U JonOrfnerA E's number one 125ccPro By Tom G.iffith VALENCIA, CA., Ocr..23 Goleta Yamaha/O'Neal-sponsored Jon Onner appears to have clinched the American Motocross Enterprises numberone plate in the I 25cc Pro ranks with dual-moto wins today at Indian Dunes' International Track. Completing the Summer Series in solid topthree placing each week, Ortner blasted Start Hill in both motos to easily out-distance the field. Adding over second per lap, today belonged solidly to the new Champ as Ormer pushed harder to the finish and powered to at least a 15-second lead each moto. Providing the dicing excitement, while Ormer motored on his merry way, was the tight battle between the Suzukis of Jan Zahn and Joe Hopkins. Zahrt got tI1e best start each go, but Joe hooked 0010 the tail of Zahn's mount providing aU the competition Jon could handle. Diving inside near the end of moto one, Hopkins nosed ahead only to miss a shift and drop back into third. That mis~ gear was thought to be a rider goof, but a second moto DNF belonged to the machine. With Hopkins out, Zahrt easily took a 2-2 ride to serond overall. Foothill Kawasaki's Michael Dawson is having a good season in the Mini ranks. Nearly unstoppable in Friday's I-I ride, he put together another flawless ride today. Dawson currently stands eighth in yearly points and added handsomely to his Junior-class totals this weekend; a top three overall seems assured. Giving second and third places the old switcheroo, SCOll SUllor out manuvered Jammin USA's Mike Crosby to take second ahead of Crosby's 2-3. Attacking the mid-pack for the (irst time was the Lillie Oakie Series Champ Ryan McKinney. Ryan will be giving the regulars fits with tI1is winning style as he competes more regularly with this (ast crowd. Results PEE WEE; 1. Jeff Wdloh (ylm); 2. Pat W_ (Ylm); 3. BrtId Schultz (Ylm).
