Western hotline Sills, Burval tie in points for Trans-Ca'l ead By Tom Corley CARLSBAD, CA, OCT. 22 With eight Tuff 'N Lite Trailers as the grand prize for the sportsman classes, the racers are engaged in a struggle for the overall points n the diet-Coke/California Motorsports lub Trans-Cal Series. 0 const is closer than the 250cc unior bout between Paul Bural and Jeff Sills. After the Sand U Hill Ranch event Burval maintained a narrow four-point lead over Sills. Today at Carlsbad, this contest develo ed into a tie after Sills won both OLOS ahead of Burval and consequently both riders LOtaled up an evenl matched 80 points. : Sills ~as the underdog in this twoway ballie as he didn't enter until the second event at Cal-Expo. After his 125 seized in the Spillway opener, S,ills was offered a Honda 250 by a ~ood friend. Liking the bike, Sills decided LO purchase it and has finished so well that he is one of the series leaders. Jeff doubted whether or not he could finish well LOday because he hurt his ankle during the week. As it turned out, Sills felt no pain-9nce he got underway. Burval gotthejumpon the pack in the first moLO. B.]. Lehn, from Jammin' USA, was in second place until h.is pipe LOok a beating and developed a big hole. Lehn barely made it off the line as he noticed that he had a Hat tire and had to ask [or a t~o minute hold. With Lehn fading back to third place, Si lis advanced [0 second pJace. Then Sills was on the warpath and after Burval. While charging on the long uphill, known as the "Carlsbad Freeway," Sills Dew past Burval to snatch the lead away. Being able LO hold the lead il was Sills who came through the finish first when Rick Atkins waved the checkered flag. Burval held on to second place and realized that he still had a good chance for the overall win if he cou ld swing the second-moLO lead. Despite the tire and pipe problems. Lehn managed third place. Mike Wil on, also racing. in the 500cc Juniors, placed his Yamaba inLO fourth place. Mike Hawks was fifth. After all of the mechanical problems in the first moto B.]. Lebn came back swinging in the final round. Lehn took the lead and led both ills and Burval. Then Sills found a better line and worked past Lehn to swipe the lead away. Lehn couldn't hold back Burval either as he lost second place to him as lhey went tbrough the rattlesnake gulch. Sills, once again, was able to work past the others after failing to get the holeshot. Jeff LOok the moLO win ahead of Burval, Lehn, David Woolmore and Rick Salter. The 250cc Junior class will have a real climax at the final event at Saddleback Park. Both Sills and Burval have 80 points with Wilson coming closest at 67 points. Sills took the day's overall with two hard-fought, first-place wins. Burval was the runner-up in both moLOS which earned him second overall. Lehn was consislent with a pair of th;"rds though he nearly tagged a better position. Wilson's 4-8 landed him fourth overall, but in the 500cc] unior class he is the LOp man in points. Fiflh on the results was Rick Salter. JT/Maxima-sponsored Tommy "Too mall" Clowers is LOO fast for his competition. Clowers was lhe only 60cc 9-1 I contestant, but he still had fun racing against the 80cc Junior 9-11 riders who went at the same time. In the first moLO, he got lhe jumpon the 80cc riders. Dustin Evan was tbe LOp 80cc rider with Donald Piantanida placing second over Brian Payne. In the final moLO, Clowers failed to get the holeshot. Payne got the jump on the pack and some might have mistaken him [or Ronnie Densford because he wore his old helmet. Continuing to'hold the lead Payne LOok the 80cc win over Piantan ida, John Montevirgen and Evans. Clowers naturally won his class. CA, OCT. 16 ProfessionaI motocrosser Jirri Pomeroy, once a Nalional and World c1as competitor, made a guest appearance today al DeAnza Cycle Park and is currently making plans for a moLOCTOSS racing/of[-road riding camp to be held here. Pomeroy tried his luck on the new, wider DeAnza track in the Vet Expert class. P'omeroy borrowed a friend's YZ250K to race the second moto, which he ea ily led through the fifth lap when bike problems forced him LO pull 0[£ the track, giving the lead to Mike Wilson (2091 leads the pack of 500cc Juniors at Carlsbad for the fifth round of the Trans-Cal Series. He went on to end the day with the overall. Open rider Chuck Minert (Hon). Team Buzooki's Larry Lowen ( uz) held off heavy charges by Yamaha of Redland's Paul Wilde and Bru e Prall (Yam) lO take second in lbe second mOlO, which gave him third overall. Minert LOok firsl overall wilh his consislant I-I score, while Prall's 2-4 nelled him second overall. Suzuki Country's Tony Spear LOok home the firsl-place trophy in lhe 25Oce-Intermediate class with a 2-1 score. il was no easy task lhough, as Spear had to ride side by side with Yamaha of Redlands-sponsored Tod Gibboney and live lO tell aboul it. Gibboney, who is probably known beller for his desire LO win than for his fauiliess, smooth riding slyle, is a difficult rider LO pass. Spear wa lhe only rider lO do il all day when in lhe second moLO heand Gibboney lraded posilions numerous limes. Casas catches CRC Dunes 125 Intermediates By Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA, OCT. 14 In the most competitive race of the night, Eric "Little Guy" Casas took the top trophy in the 125cc Intermediate class. The California Racing Club took their tum under the lights on the Dunes International Track. All were presented wi th the chance [0 make it into the upcoming CRC Amateur Supercros [0 be held at San Diego Stadium with tonight being a quali- fying event. With next week's race (OcLOber 28) being the last chance LO qualify for San Diego, the riders who hadn't qualified already were anious LO do so LOnight. Casas was evenly matched with competitor Rich Truchinski who won a recent Friday night event. Making the line-up even tougher,Jon Barrick from Mid-Cities Honda pulled up LO the starting gate and posed a threat. Barrick rides Wilh the number-one plate which he earned from his many wins during unday events. Barrick was not a familiar face in this nighttimeevem yet certainly capable of winning. Taking the lead in the first moLO of racing was Eric Casas. Barrick proved himself as he took control of the runner-up position. Dick Aliens-sponsored Truchinski placed himself behind Barrick. These three maintained their position lap after lap. All three were mounted on a Honda. Following the "red riders" came a couple of fast Suzuki riders. Mark Davenport edged out Mark Harwell for fourth place. Proving himself to be the holeshot artist of this class, Casas leaped out ahead of the pack in the final moLO. The first place position didn't change with Casas in control again. However, the second-place position changed hands as Truchinski was now the runner-up. Barrick Dew in tllird. These three went all out but maintained their position and no passing was seen. Through the finish it was Casas, Truchinski, Barrick, Davenport and Harwell. Two firsts earned Casas the overall win. Truchin ki's 3-2 LOok second place. The 2-3 tally earned Barrick the thirdplace trophy. Mis ingouton a trophy was Davenport who took fourth in both moLOS and also overa] I. Harwell's consistent 5-5 tally gave him fifth. The l25cc Pro class was on the track with the 250cc Pro riders and the twoclas es mingled. Louie Franco won thefirstmotoonhi Hondaover Denny Purcell. In the final bout, Franco took a spill on a corner. To make mallers worse, one of the 250cc riders centerpunched Louie and injured his arm. Franco continued LO ride so he could get his entry money back, but he went very slowly with his arm out to the side. As it turned out Purcell won the moto and the only cash prize over Franco. Meszaros was the fast guy in the 250cc Pro class and won the final moLO over Wageman and Sievertson. Overall it was Meszaros, Wageman and Sievenson. 19
