F'he MILLER HIGH LIFE SUPERCROSS at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, _Saturday night, November 5, is the seventh and final round of the 1983 diet Coke Trans-Cal Series; and the last SuperCTOSS race of th~ year! the all-star factory shootout as David Bailey faces Mark Barnett again for the £irst time since the Americans teamed-up to beat the Europeans, and Bailey's whisker·thin, one-point win of the million-dollar '83 Super Series. Broc Glover tries for his third checkered flag in San Diego; as well as the top guns of Team San Diego- Ricky Johnson, Ron Lechien, ·Scott Burnworth and Marly Tripes all will aim for the glory! At the east end of the stadium, near the scoreboard, this threatening mound of dirt will make even the most courageous astronaut's heart miss a beatl The earth falls out from under t~ riders as they hit the ridge and are catapulted high above the stands in an outrageous free fall down to the ta-· dium Door. "We built a pretty big jump at the MILLER HIGH LIFESUPERCROSS in Sacramento:' says track construction engineer Dave Tanner. "But for San Dit:go, we're going to make it another five feet taller. This is going to be the highest, most peaked jump these guys !,lave ever attempted!" The haJ(.mile course will be built from 10,000 tons of a special soil mixftire - of sand, clay, and loam that retains moisture - to hold up under pressure, and provide extra traction for the bikes. In consultation with Gary Bailey of Gary Bailey Motocross School, the design of the track will feature double passing lanes and 10 major obstacles in all; including two sets of infamous stadium-style whoop-dedoos, two five-foot ramp jumps, and a power-robbing 50-foot sandpit! Rider Roster The season-ender Supercross at the home of the Chargers, Padres, and Aztecs boasts a spectacular rider line- up. The MILLER HIGH LIFE PERCROSS is more than just the last Supercross race of the year. It is the last chance for riders to prove to friends, fans, teammates, and managers how good they really are. Contract negotiations for 1984 are already underway, and many privateers are hoping to catch the watchful eyes of factory team scouts. Aboard their big red machines for Team Honda will be the newlycrowned 1983 Super Series Champion, David Bailey; along with Goat Breker, Johnny O'Mara, and Brian Myerscough, who just returned with a fourthplace finish at the Australian Supercross. Piloted by multi-ehampion Mark "The Bomber" Barnett, the Team Suzuki SlaTS include Scott Burnworth and George Holland, who is currently leading the I25cc class in the diet Coke Trans-Cal Series. Team Yamaha's popular San Diego rider, Broc Glover, is primed for his third win at thefounhannual MILLER HIGH LIFE SUPERCROSS. "I look forward to the San Diego race every year," explains Broc. "It really pumps me up to ride in front of my hometown crowd; and I'd like to wrap-up the Supercross year with another win there'" Leading the traditional Team San Diego, Glover's feelings are shared by Yamaha's Rick Johnson, and Ron Lechien who both also hail from EI Cajon. Sharing the hometown advantage are Scott Burnworth, Marry Tripes, and Mike Tripes of Santee, who will ride a Husqvarna in San Diego. Lady Supercrosser, Dorene Payne, will be riding a Cagiva. John Finkledey and Ron Turner are riding KTM bi kes and Andy Je£(erson is riding a Husqvarna. Team Tamm will be out in force as well as SlaTS like Jeff SurwaJl, who placed second in the Canadian Supercross Series, Warren Reid, Donnie Cantaloupi, and former San Diego Supercross winner, Mike "Too Tall" Bell, who is back in action following knee surgery. Big Bucks For Wmn.... Over ., ,000,000 On The Un. Ready for action, the famed Super- cross riders are eager to reap the rewards that thi last Supercross race of the year will bring. Five champions for the 1983 CMCldiet Coke Trans-Cal Se.ries will be crowned: the winners in the 125, 250, and 500cc classes; a Supercross champion, and one overall Series champion. In addition to the Event Purse, diet Coke will award an extra 10,000 Point Fund to the winner of the Sacramento and San Diego Supercross events. With big money at stake and championships on the line and many factory contracts up for review, the MILLER HIGH LIFE SUPERCROSS will be the best and mostchallenging battle of the year! Easy Race Format On a track designed 10 take on 80 of the very best motocross racers in the country, entrants of the MILLER HIGH LIFE SUPERCROSS will have to face the torturous terrain not once, but twice, and sometimes even three times. Under the current Trans-Cal Series format, Saturday night's starting field is divided into 20-rider elimination heats. The formula consists of four qualifying heats, two semi-finals, one consolation, and the final 20-lap Main Event. Rider against rider, ~eam against team, the November 5 season finale promises intense competition. Intermission Specials A full evening of non-stop racing action will continue during the intermissions at the stadium. There will be an exciting ATC Championship Showdown featuring popular riders like Honda's Dean Sundahl and Mark Weixeldorfer - both from San uiego - who are among the premier o£(road three-wheeler racing talents in the U.. today. There is also an 80cc Mini Expert race restricted to the 14- to l6-year-old age group. These 20 top future Supercross champs include Mike Healey, Mouse McCoy, Eddie Hicks, Terry Bostard and Bobby Moore. Fans can enjoy a change of pace with a 20-rider Women's Supercross even t. The ladies will race 10 laps during intermission for a purse of $IOOO! Spectators can also root for their favorite radio personalities in a special KGB Jock Race! BMXA riders, Diamond Back Team, Van's Trick Team and Motocross Team will give a BMX demonstration on a separate section of the Supercross track. Fanfare For Spectators There are special bonuses for ra~e fans at San Diego! Diet Coke will trade free Early Entry passes for empty sixpacks of Coca-Cola and diet Coke to recycle. A diet Coke Early Entry Pass, along with a regular upercross ticket, admits spectators through Gate F at 4 p.m. to watch riders practice. So, bring your cans to the stadium on Saturday to be the first to see Team San Diego test the track. Regular gates will open at 6 p.m. Racing starts at 8 p.m. Check out the pre-race action in the pits as the riders and mechanics prime their machines for the big challenge. Also, you will getinjreeon Saturday afternoon to watch the BMXA Stale Championship qualifier for the NBL that will be held later in the year. Racing starts at II a.m., and admission is free at the BMX track in the parking lot at the stadium. Watch motocross Saturdays on XETV Television, Channel6.
