In the Open Experts, Fred Traskowsky and Randy Jones battled it out for first-place money. Moving up to the Expert class for the first time, John Rush was riding consistently back in third place. In the second moto, Jones srole the holeshot with Traskowsky right on his tail. Traskowsky went down hard in the whoopde-doos to ~ive the win to Jones. The mims were out in force today, with 18 riders turning out to race in the various divisions. Joel Naverth won the first Mini Senior moto only to lose it in the whoops and break his leg while leading the second moto. Alan Sommers went on to win the moto and the overall. Christy borrows bike, wins Aztec-MX Braden tops the 'Gang' at Ross Downs By Ernie Furguson By Bob Bagwell COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, OCT. 16 In the 250cc Amateur class at Aztec Raceway Sunday, Danny Christy mounted a 250cc Cagiva for the first time in his - young racing career. Nonnallya l25cc Amateur rider, Christy seized his Honda in practice and went looking for a bike to borrow. In his quest for a ride Christy talked to Jim Long, the local Cagiva dealer. All Long had available was a 250. "What the heck," Christy answered, ''I'll just ride in the 250cc class." Well, Christy rode in the 250cc Amateur class and promptly took a third in the first moto and then in a display of super riding in the second moto, took first place by a healthy margin to sweep the overall. Steve Kyle has punched out of the 125cc Amateur class and moved into the 125cc Expert class while still winning the number three plate in the Mini Expert class. Kyle took the overall today as he led away from the gate and never looked back. Rich Winter took the second spot behind Kyle with a 3-3 effort while Colorado's "First Lady of Motocross, Mickey Gonzalez, took the third-place honors with a 6-2 afternoon. Due to a light turnout in all three Expert divisions, Aztec Raceway combined the riders into one Expert class. Kevin McNight, riding on a Kawasaki 125, took both motos with typical great riding. McNight outlasted Brent Smith with some slick moves and Smith was forced to settle for the . second-place money. Results • VET B: 1. Bob Wall; 2. Gary Booth; 3. Dave Stewart. VET A: ,. Ronnie Orr pursuaded several of the Over 30 riders to attend, and they puton quitea show. John Braden held on to win the events followed by Charlie Reynolds and Ronnie Orr, with Ken Remington fourth. "Black Ban", a rider who nobody knew, blasted by everyone in the first moto, then dissapeared, leaving all to say, "Who was that masked man?" The old dudes had so much fun that during the intermission they ran a flat track race on the famous Ross Downs short track; knobby tires and all. The fans loved it, yelling for more. "Old" PJ Webster showed up with a new exhaust system on his 50cc YZinger and blew his nine competitors away. Arron Davis was second and Tim Clements third, with Casey Steel fourth. Dave Fletcher ran off with the 60cc event, followed by Caset Pinkston and Dave Stevens. Fletcher was going so fast, he entered his bike in the 200cc race but just did not have the power to run with the bigger bikes on the straights. Steve Maiden won, Brian Fleck, Dave Fletcher, and Chris Pinkston finished behind. Hardcharging Ray Toney battled with Ronnie Camp and Bill Hazen in the 125cc events, before taking the win. Rowman trips up Kansas 125s By Patty Montgomery CHAPMAN, KS, OCT. 16 Cody Rowman punctuated his dominance of the 125cc Expert class at the rebuilt Race Place II track today when he became the first rider to clear the challenging triple jumps, one of the few Expert riders to do so. Although Rowman didn't get the holeshot in moto one, within several laps he was in the lead to stay. In the second moto, Rowman again used his triple-jump prowess to clear away from the pack and take the win for the overall victory. Kevin Wolf finished second for the day! and Brad MINI MINI: 1. Sullivan super at Austin night MX By Joe Milian AUSTI ,TX, OCT. 7 Some races are better than others, and tonight's sets of mOlOS at the Austin night MX were some of the best in recent memory, with sensational competition throughout all classes. San Marcos Honda pilot Pete Sullivan, after being rebuffed rather rudely in his quest for the first-place trophy in the 125cc Intermdiate class last week, came back with a vengeance tonight. Sullivan rode as though there were no other riders in his class in posting a I-I score for the evening. He impressed the assembled multitude with his sweeping holeshots from the outside that carried him into the lead and away from the competition in both motos. Lonnie Faglie, appearing for the first time at Austin Moto Sport Park in several years, could only stay with the [Ieet Sullivan for the opening laps, contenting himself with the runner-up spot after it was apparent he was no match for the flying Sullivan. Phil Washburn took third overall with a grilly performance that found him going fight to the flag with Shelby Rumfield in both motos. Kasson Racing Team sensation Brian Lambert made his debut in the Expert class tonight, finding life among the money seekers somewhat different than the Intermediates. Lambert got good starts each time out but may have been a bit nervous in his initial engagement with the Pros. Frank Tello beat everybody to the first turn in each moto and was less than a half lap from the win in heat one when he ran out of gas. Hunter Carothers capitalized on Tello's misfortune by outrunning Jack Beckham to the flag when the fuel ran out. Tello made his hot start hold up for all but two laps in the second round, sliding sideways in a turn to allow Carothers by. Tello held on for third ahead of Beckham but his first heat DNF was costly, sending him down to sixth overall. Carother's teammate, Jamie Mitchell, aboard an '81 YZ250 that has seen better days, stayed upon two wheels and saw consistency rewarded in the form of thirdplace dollars, nosing out Lambert by a single point. Hoenshell takes two in Kansas By Sharon Jones HEPLER, KS, OCT. 2 Kansas motocross fans had a pleasant surprise when they traveled to Hepler, Kansas, to see the new track put together by Circle W Recreation. The nationtrack is a very demanding three-mile course, with deep loamy dirt and a huge irrigation system. Hepler was the site of round three of the 1983 Coors Motocross series today, and 5000 was up for grabs in the Expert class. Clay Hoenshell made the biggest killing by winning all four motos in the 125 and Open Expert classes. Darren Rhoten drove up from Texas to dominate the 250cc Expert class. Hoenshell led the hungry pack of 125cc Experts around the first turn and immediately put a cushion between himself and "Whisperin'" Smith. Team Green's Carroll Richardson took over second by the end of the first lap, only to DNF two laps later. Joe Burke moved into second while JeH Schumacher and Mike Boston came from way back to third and fourth. Boston was riding a borrowed bike due to an ignition failure just minutes before the start. While Hoenshell was enjoying a 23second lead over Burke, Schumacher was whittling away at Burke's secondplace margin. By the end ofthe moto, "Schu" had pulled within a few bikelengths of Burke. Boston took the second-molO holeshot with Hoenshell right behind. In less than one lap, Hoenshell took over the lead with Boston gelling knocked down in the pass. Boston said, "I had the inside but he rammed me anyway." Schumacher had a much better start and ran second until Carroll Richardson went blasting by. Three laps later, Richardson's frame broke and he had to pull off, giving second place back to Schu. Burke finished a comfortable third. Dennis Daft and Mike Boston came from behind for fourth and fifth. • al-cali~r Results 125 EX: 1. Clay Hoenshell; 2. Jeff Schumechar; 3. Joe Burke: 4. Mike Boston; 5. Dennis Daft. 125 AM: 1.
