Shockey tops at Euro scrambles By Marvin Moto EMME-IT, 10, SEPT. 25 One hundred and thirty-two mOLOcrossers, desert racers, Oat trackers and general en thusiasts showed up for the Black Derby Racing European Scrambles in Emmell, making ita b stattended scrambles event to date in Idaho. The 250cc Pros put on the best show of the day. The faster riders were running the six-and-a-ha!£-mile course in under 10 minutes, which makes for quite a few laps in a scraml'>les race. Motocrosser Loren Shockey, making a comeback after an injury, got 0[[ to a poor stan, while Ron "Magic" Dillion pulled the holeshot. Dillion seemed to be well on his way to victory, but Honda-mounted Shockey came to life, passing Tony Nanclairo, Bob Nancolis and finally Dillion at the ha!£way mark. Dillion seemed surprised by the pass and chased the Honda rider for a lap, but couldn't keep pace. Shockey won the race in fine motocross style. elbows out, clutching itout of corners and doing clickers over the doublejump finish line. At the start of the 125 c Pro class, Cagiva rider jeff "Crash" Miller locked his right wrist to the full-on position and kept it there until the checkered [lag waved. looking back only now and then to check where second-place Mike Kelly was. Miller seemed a lillie bored after the race until he was presented with $100 for his winning e[[ort. Suddenly, he was surrounded by friends who promptly packed him of[ lO a local pizza parlor for a viclOry celebration. ~ In the Open ranks, joey Wright rode his Honda just fast enough to (end off allacks from brother jerry Wright and a back-at-it-again Ron Dillion. DeVol jammin' at Jolly Roger MX By Mary Kay Aufrance KENT, WA, SEPT. 25 The jam-packed fans weren't the only ones "jammin' " at the Seattle Motocycle Club's motocross at Jolly Roger Raceway. The course was packed with excitement all day long. Even practice supplied some thrills, which.were If your dealer doesn 't handle exemplified in a fall by 125A racer Scott Grimm. When Open Pro Gard Hollinger noticed that Grimm had crashed on the landing side of the finish jump, it was too late lo stop. So, being the genLlemanly type, Hollinger made like a test rider on a magazine cover and neatly jumped both Grimm and his downed Yamaha, leaving nary a knobby on the bewildered Grimm's helmet! In the first Open Pro moto, Hollinger was not so skill£ul at dodging his downed competitors. While he was in hot second-place pursuit of Mike Crater's Burien Honda, Todd Paulson came tank-slapping by on his Paulson Suzuki. This meant an inevitable center-punch and tumble into the trees for both Hollinger and Paulson. It also left Crater with an unchallenged lead. Meanwhile, Ted DeVol was muscling his 504 KTM four-stroker up to a close battle for second place, behind Lars Trulson. At the nag it was Crater, Trulson, then DeVol. The second Open Pro molO again saw Crater take the lead, but Hollinger stole his holeshot before they reached the first turn. In third place was DeVol. After a few laps, Crater was demoted from second place, when he tipped over in a berm, letting DeVol just cruise on by. Meanwhile, Hollinger mu t have been looking for some excitement to liven up the boredom of riding all alone at least 15 seconds ahead of the pack. So, he found a bump in the track to send his bike into a brief but disarming tankslapper, while DeVol just kept on cruising right into the number one spot. That's how the second motoended, with DeVol, Hollinger, then Crater. The overall money went lo DeVol, then Crater, then Trulson. Every cute little girl should learn lo cook. And c.'ookin' is what Tara Harrison and her Kawasaki did best, on her way lo winning the Pee Wee class. In the first molO, Harrison and Louis Aron diced it up for the lead, changing places several times, until Aron's pipe came lose. So, Aron had to let Harrison by to take the win. In the second Pee Wee molO, Harrison whipped-up another win (before going on lo take a second place in the 80cc class). The top three Pee Wee spots went to Harrison, Aron, then Brad Lewis (Kaw). • sho~ hiDl this••• Dear Dealer, As a Cycle News dealer, you'll not only have the pleasure of dispensing a lot of good cycle news to your customers, but you'll also have the pleasure of pocketing 50% profit.
