BUILTH WELLS, WALES, ENGLAND, OCT. 3 The U.S. Trophy and Vase squads finished day one of the 58th ISDE in Wales intact. No scoring or p1acings were available at presstime. The U.S. team encountared bad luck prior to the start of the event when Terry Cunningham sustained a broken leg while practicing on September 29. Cunningham was operated on to pin and plate a bedly broken right femur. Honda rider Drew Smith moved from the Vase Team to take Cunningham's spot as the four-stroke rider on the squad. He joins Husqvarna-mounted Mark Hyde. Ed Lojak. Mike Melton. Larry Roeseler and Frank Stacy in the U.S. effort. Wally Wilson then joined the Vase team to add a four-stroke rider to the team of Kevin Brown. Kevin Hines and Ron Ribolzi. All are Husqvarana-mounted. The day one time schedule. run over muddy trails. was tight enough to take an average of 420 route marks (seven minutes) from team members. Lojak picked up additional points after his engine seized during the first special test. He lost six minutes. We are addened to report the death of road racer, and JUSt recently crowned D-27 Open Modified Production and F-I Champ John Doyle. Doyle crashed September 10 when tbe chain on his bike broke, causing his rear wheel to lock up while he was leading a Superbike Pro-Am heat race in Washington.
