Edge ANCHORAGE, AK, AUG. 21 M9st Anchorage area residents were huddled in their homes for warmth and protection from the rain. but at Kincaid Park a few die-hard racers competed in an AMRA motocross. The rider turnout was light, but the action heavy as Ralph Blanchard took his Anchorage Cycle Sales-sponsored. Yamaha to the overall win in the l25cc Expert class. Blanchard was definitely the fastest on the track, turning in the quickest lap times of any class. "Fhe racer of the da y was l25cc Expert Blanchard. He fought Kevin Schaub for the first half of mota one, bujengine problems sidelined Schaub fOI:.the day. The only other racer to re By challenge Blanchard was a h a-riding Kelly Butler, who mounte a good effort in the early part of rrf8to one, only to be slowed by a fail· in[,clutch. -,~~e second mota was a Butler h~Wshot as he jelled into the lead wj-m Blanchard right behind. By the lO!minute mark Blanchard had passed B~tI'er and started LO pull away. It Idb'Red easy for Blanchard, but a hard g~ /} ff saw Butler retake the lead. BI nchard was able to get under way agam but not without a set of severely rotated handlebars, Even with his h ILJalebars in a completely forward po~ll:ion, Blanchard was fast, but too sh~ken up to catch Butler. By the end or:r1he moto Honda-mounted Joe Good was challenging Blanchard for second. Good put in a fine ride, wehling his way from the back of the p '&. but by checker time, he was still inthird. The five- lap event was totally entertaining and radically exciting - like a threering circus or a figure-eight demolition derby! As the Sacramento J ammeUe5 shook their pom-poms, the first half of the 50-plus-rider field screamed into the first turn. The starter had a little difficulty with the gate and the second half was a Ii ttle late on their start. Late enough that the first half was coming around to complete their first lap as the second half, motoring head-on toward the first half, was nearing the first turn. It looked like a game of club chicken as 25 riders were going WFO from one end of the track while an equal amount were going jut as fast from the opposite end of the track. All 50 riders arrived at the first turn simultaneously and, unbelievabl y, all meshed like cogs on gears, The best part was that not a single rider went down! When the scores were tallied, the Sacramento Jammers took the overall, with the Polka Dots and Dirt Diggers second and third, respectively. The two loosing clubs bought the pizza and beer that night. Schaub, Roskelley trade wins in Alaska By M.R. Edge ANCHORAGE, AK, AUG. 28 It was a beautiful day at Kincaid Park with sunny skies, temperatures in the high 60s and good racing. Jeff RosJ<,el ley (Suz) and Triple K DistribuLOr's Kevin Schaub (Han) provided some of the day's closest racing as both won a maLO each in the Pro class. The Pro class in the Alaska Motorcycle Racing Association is an open displacement class where racers compete for money. Amateurs are di vided into Novice and Expert and race for trophies. The first mota saw Schaub grab the lead, with Roskelley in hot pursuit. Two laps later Roskelley passed and started to pull away, but Schaub took the mota win when a thrown chain relegated Roskelley to second place. Roskelley started the second mota off with a holeshot but was passed by Schaub on the next lap. The two diced for the entire mota, leaving the rest of the pack far behind. Roskelley, though, was able LO pull it out, beating Schaub to the checkered flag and taking the overall by virtue of his better second-maLO finish. Schaub also rode the I 25cc Expert class, coming away with the overall win. Ralph Blanchard on an Anchorage Cycle Sales Yamaha won the first moto after a LOugh fight with Schaub, but a DNF in the second maLO gave Schaub the overall. Kevin's brother Kyle put LOgether 4-2 mota finishes for a second overall. The Schaubs are a true racing family with lillIe brother Kirk taking third overall in the Mini Expert class. • Results MINI NOV: 1, K.lly Styl.s (Kaw); 2, Da".n Rup.
