Donnie Canteloupi leads Jim Holley (35) and Allen Berluti. Both Chandler and Lechien returned to do baule. There was a lot of action in the Pro division-one qualifier when Chandler stole the holeshot, but went down in the first turn which put him back in last. Myerscough took over the lead while Magoo passed half the field less than a lap later. Chandler evenlUally put himself imo second, but it was too late to catch Myerscough. Both O'Mara and Lechien easily won their qualifiers. The l25cc Pro main was definitely up in the air. When the pack headed out of the first turn it was Yamaha pilot Doug Genr.ry who surprisingly had the lead. Chandler was in second followed by Yamaha riders A.j. Whiting, Roger Hensley and Lechien, Honda-mounted Jeff Stanford, Suzuki rider Gary Bowman and Yamahamoumed Chris Heisser. Myerscough was i)ack in eighth while O'Mara was about 20th. Chandler had the lead at the end of the first lap while Lechien found his way into second. Gentry fell back to third ahead of Whiting, Hensley and David Hussey. During the second goaround, Myerscough picked off four riders for third. O'Mara, meanwhile, had the throule to his works Honda wide open. The "0 Show" was doing justlhat; putting on quite a show. By the third lao, O'Mara tooK over sixth and a lap later he caught up to and passed Myerscough. Up front, Chandler looked as though he was just out on a Sunday cruise. But Lechien was still a threat, about eight seconds behind the leader. O'Mara was trimming the distance between himself and Lechien with each tum. About five laps from the finish, Magoo experienced something he is quite familiar with; falling. While entering a reasonably easy, but sandy tum, Chandler washed out. He quickly got his mount upright, but had a hard time getting it SlaTted. While Chandler tried to put life back into his bike he watched both Lechien and O'Mara motor by. Finally the Honda fired to life and he re-entered the mow in third. Lechien took control of the lead, but O'Mara was glued to the Yamaha's rear fender, as the two leaders engaged in a dogfighl for the lead. With a few laps remaining, O'Mara shot down Lechien and the "0 Show" took over the lead. Lechien stayed close to the new leader, but O'Mara began to gain a slight advantage. Back in third, Chandler began riding the way the fans wanted to see him ride - fast and crazy. But Magoo was struck down again when a rock lodged into his chain guide, causing the chain to derail. As a result, Chandler could not finish the race. . In the lead, O'Mara rode fast and strong as he crossed the£inish line£irst. Lechien finished a close second while Myerscough finished third. Next came Doug Dubach and Whiting. On Sunday it was the 2505' turn lo go at it. Again, Chandler, Lechien, Myerscough and O'Mara had no problems making it into the main. However, Honda's Darrell Shultz had some prob.Iems. (Over a year ago, Shultz injured his knee, dropping from the motocross scene. Mammoth was his first U.S. race since the injury, although he recemly rode a couple of stadium races in Europe to SlaTt the road to recovery.) In Shultz's qualifier, he stole the holeshot and stretched his lead to a comfortable margin. But, near the end of the mow, Shultz crashed. He was slightly shaken and DNF the mow. Shultz returned in the consolation race and easily took the win. The 250cc main SlaTt wentlO Ma/!;oo, who blasted down the downhills in the lead. Chandler looked to have his second win of the weekend in the bag as he led the pack throughout most of the race. But, bad luck would strike him down again near the end of the race. His Honda developed an untimely flat which dropped him out of action. Shultz, while in contemion for the lead, again crashed causing another DNF. Lechien, who cruised most of. the race in second, overtook the lead and he finally got his long-awaited win. O'Mara finished in second while Honda-mounted Jeff Hicks finished third. Hicks, in his qualifier, rode a superb race by finishing the moto only a few seconds behind Chandler. Reid had a busy weekend riding on all three days by taking seventh in the l25s and sixth in the Opens, finished best in the 250s with a fourth. Fifth went to Heisser who also took a sixth-place finish in the l25cc Pro class. We had hoped to have the complete results from the accompanying sportsman-class racing. However, due lO a mix-up within the sponsoring club, those results were unavailable to us as of presstime.
