Fay held off Green's advances to the flag for his second main win just as he did here last week. Green finished in the runner-up spot on both occa, sions and is stoked about the jx>ssibility of an AMA short track regional here next year, commenting "I like it h" . h ere,Just Ietme 1mowwenltlsan d I'll £ly home from the Nationals." MX By Bill Spencer WATSONVILLE, CA, AUG. 28 Yamaha Support rider Jim Ellis surprised very few in capturing both 250 and Open Pro ov~rall wins at the final Z.A.P. Super- Allen Silhanek flew his Yamaha to the 125cc Pro victory at Watsonville. Fay ends FT season with two wins at Bellingham By Clay Ught BELLINGHAM, WA, SEPT. 3 National number 13 Mickey Fay closed the AMA northwest flat-track season in spectacular style at Hannegan Speedway's .' .. 40 three-eighths-mile Championship in Bellingham. Fay topped his heat races, the Open trophy dash and the 250 and Open Pro main events on his N-D/Bel-Ray/Marushin Helmets/ Hi-Point/American Hondas. Local product Randy Patterson (Yamaha Northwest/BBRP Racing/Fred Boettner/V.S. Army KTM) took the district number one plate as well as the bigh points in the 250 and Open classes with consistent riding all season long on Yamaha and KTM machinery. The 250cc main event was classic Fay, riding his 250 Honda waterpumper into the lead over J,tandy Green, riding similar machinery. Patterson put his Yamaha into the hunt at the completion of a lap, but the biggest surprise, in third, was Steve Aseltine, who is but 14 years of age and continues to battle with the National numbers. Aseltine rode right up on Green's rear wheel while Patterson rammed from behind. At the hal£way £lags, the order read Fay, Green...J\seltine, PattersOn and Ho~- da-mounted Kirk Strong in the top five. Fay, Green and Aseltine staged an exciting display of speed and maneuverability in the 1-2-3 positions, led by Fay's feet-on-the-pegs style. Fay and Green pulled away from Aseltine, who will be something else in two years when he's able to turn Pro. The finishing order was Fay, Green, Aseltine, Sl,rong and Patterson. Fay, Green, Strong, Patterson and Charlie Barkman led a National numbers parade on the opening lap of Open action and provided the most spectacular racing of the season in Bellingham. Each race continues to get better and this one was the finale, led by Fay's 500 Honda. Green (500 Han), Strong (500 Han) Patterson (500 KTM) and Barkman (500 CoAl shook the grandstands in their topfive runoff on big machinery. The majority of the riders opted for 500 machinery due to the slick track from previous precipitation; onry two riders chose to campaign on 750s. The top five were never more than six bikelengths apart throughout the main and made up a mini National. Fay and Green were doing a good job at hammering away for the lead while another shootout occured behind in a three-way battle for third between Strong, who initially started in row three due LO a miscalculation of the start, Patterson and Barkman. AMA Junior Chris Fitzhugh and fellow Juniors Steve Pruczinski, Don Wilson and Mike Kearney had their own private war li:oing on behind sports CMC Summer Series motocross on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds track, while AI Silhanek aced both l25cc Pro shows on his MPE Yamaha. Ellis, Rick Luther and Paul Duchscher led the first maLO of Ithe day in the 250cc round, with Ellis long gone while Jon Nelson worked up and around for the second spot by midmota. The second round was similar with Nelson catching up quicker but still leaving a wide margin of victory for Ellis. Luther grabbed third overall with a 3-4 count over a muchimproved Duchscher in fifth behind Doug McRae. Cross-country specialist Scott Davis kept busy in the 0[£ season by winning both Open Intermediate motos with two seconds, and then took the Vet Expert class, winning both motos. Phil Douglas led the Open Pros around for better than a lap until Phil Oveland berserked his Moore & Sons Husky to the front and won the first mota handily. Bret Cahors took a pair of seconds for second overall in a race that had some strange positioning that saw Billy Grossi riding Rich Lokke's Honda but go out each mota with problems. A good comefrom-behind effort by Ellis in the first round and then a runaway second round was good for the overall victory with a 3-1. Ellis was last guy out and ninth around on the first-mota lap count and worked to a close third place behind Cahors. Grossi looked very good running third along with Douglas and Cahors until his engine seized. In the second round Ellis' yellow Yamaha was colored "gone" while Oveland had the deep-in-thepack syndrome to overcome. Oveland moved from seventh to fourth at mid-point and then worked by Douglas for third, but had no chance at second-place. It was Ellis on top, with Cahors and Ovelami second and third. Douglas, 4-4 and Doug McRae, 5-5, rounded out the top five. Results 250 PRO: 1.JimEllis(Vam); 2. Jon Nelson (Yam); Rick Luther (Han). (Y~:)7~.'~j~~i~~ (~~). (Han); 2.
