Larry Maiers (left) talks to James Woolridge about the crash which cost him the 85cc·(12-13) Modified win. Also new for '83 was the state team championship that saw the National Cup go to Ohio by a one-point margin over Texas. Texas and Michigan, however, each claimed five class championships while 60cc Stock division winner Bryan mith earned the only crown for Ohio. Fresh from his double class victory at the NMA Nationals in Ponca City, Oklahoma, Keith Bowen won all three 250cc A tock mOlOS besting Kawasaki's Billy Tuman and Yamaha rider Tim Coombs. Tim is the son of the event's promoter, Dave Coombs. Yamaha/Hi-Point/Maxima/Jonessponsored Bowen saw close action in the l25cc A Stock class, but managed wins in the first two motos. Moto three, however, saw Yamapa's Danny Storbeck take the lead ahead of defending 125cc A Champion 'Ed Warren. Their dice was finally resolved when Storbeck fell. Bowen, meanwhile, had worked up from a mid-pack start and soon after the halfway sign, he engaged Warren in a [jght for the lead. Warren held firm against fellow "Michigan Mafia" member and Bowen's last lap wheelto-wheel effort re ulted in a spill. Bowen remounted to finish second. "That was my last malO as an ama· Double winner Junior Jackson and Team Green's Dave Jordan. teur," aid Bowen. "It would have looked good to finish fir t. I hope to have my pro license by next week," he continued. Despite his third moto win, Warren netted only eighth overall after a very poor showing in the opening mota. Warren also had problems in the first 125cc Modified mota, but he came back strong in the final two motos and earned fourth overall. Storbeck won two Mini A crowns here last year and having graduated to the larger machinery, Storbeck confidently rode to wins in the 125cc Youth Stock and Modified divisions. Storbeck carved out his third class championship in the tough 125cc A Modified class. Mota one saw Storbeck come from the back to finish in fourth, close behind North Carolina's Jeff Bowling. Kentucky's Tommy Watts made a late lap move to edge C. Richardson and take the win. Mota two saw Yamaha/JT/Maxima/CRF-sponsored Storbeck stretch out his early lead while Warren moved his Kawasaki into second. With three laps remaining, Storbeck's exhaust pipe came loose. Warren closed quickly and shot by for the win while SlOrbeck struggled to second. David Green (29) is awaiting the outcome of his appeal of his 250cc B Stock class disqualification. Warren and Storbeck matched wheels again in mota three, but Storbeck fell and cruised to third with his class win secure. Watts was six points behind for second and Warren netted fOltrth overall with his 22-1-1 tally. Bowling DNF the final motos. Yamaha/Moto-X Fox/Hi-Point/ Greg Cecil-sponsored Kevin Foley of Florida put together a string of seconds to tOP the 250cc A Modified class in one of the week's hottest contests, as Ka wasaki rider Todd Harrell banged bars with Foley in all three mOlOS. Robert Wagner led the first moto from start to finish while Foley and Harrell worked their way through traffic. Foley settled into second, but with even minutes remaining, Harrell closed to begi n a fierce dice. Harrell got ahead very briefly, but Foley regained the position and held. Mota two was a carbon copy of the first except that the lead Kawasaki was piloted by Tommy Watts in tead of Wagner. As before, Harrell closed on Foley for a late-moto fight over s condo Foley held again and said afterward, "1 didn't get tired, but 1 sure got worried!" Going inlO the third moto, Foley led by two points over Wagner and Harrell who were tied for second. On the second lap of the moto, Wagner DNF from a seized engine. Watts had a DNF in the first mota leaving Foley and Harrell the only contenders for the crown. Foley moved from eighth lo first in the first 10 minutes. At the halfway signal, Harrell mounted a sudden charge that saw him go by front-runners Rick Lindell, Dave Molder and Mike Roth all in one lap. Within another half lap, Harrell caught Foley. But Foley didn't need the win to earn the title and waved Harrell past. Said Foley, "I tried to out-think Todd all week and it worked." Foley's Open A victory came easier as he took the first two moto wins ahead of fellow Yamaha rider Tim Shepard. Front runner Keith Crawford of Michigan suffered a chest injury and DNF. Tim Coombs won the third moto with style, but a DNF in the second moto kept him out of the top 10. In the 100cc Youth cia s, Frank Knight and Jeff Stanton ran wheelto-wheel in the first moto, finishing first and second, respectively. The pair fought a close points race all week and moto three found Stanton at tl)e (ront with Knight stuck in 15
