Danny Storbeck (30) won the 126cc A Stock. Modified and Youth classes. Keith Bowen (11) topped the 125 and 250cc Stock classes. Kevin Foley (2) leads Todd Harrell (14) in 250cc A Modified action. The two ran wheel to wheel in each moto with Foley taking the overall win. Keith Turpin (23) and Mark Melton (4) mix it up during an 86cc Modified 14-15) moto. Turpin took the overall win with Melton second. Senior rider Gordon Bowden and Women's division ace Lisa Akin successfully defended their '82 crowns. The AMA's rigorous qualifying system selects the top 40 riders in 25 Womens, Youth, Senior and Amateurdivisions. With the country's top 1,000 Amateur riders on hand, there was never a dull moment in four days of racing. Forty states and Canada were represented on the entry list. Practice sessions alternated with motos so that riders had practice laps before each moto and came to the starting gate usually within two hours after their practice. The program ran smoothly and kept very close to the printed schedule. The week was blessed with fine weather - an improvement over last year's rain-drenched event. The course was unchanged, but the SUlrt was rerouted. "This year's start is a toneddown affair," explained one official. "Last year we had far too many injuri ~onJhe start."
