winner over the out-horsepowered Glasham, but Bernard's fuel pump drive belt came off at the SIlO-foot mark and that gave Glasham just enough room to get by before the lights. The final run was all Glas~m's, as his consistency paid off against the ailing Kawasaki of Clark Sargis. Glasham's win was his firstever NMRA title in six years of com· petition; in fact it was his first final round. After thankin$' tuner Lamont Hurst and brother·m-Iaw George KIene for their direct help. Glasham thanked Ron Teson and Wayne Davis for their support and direction over tbe years. "We were consistent. that wa why we won," said Glasham, "Nobody else made all of the rounds - we were the only funny bike that did not break something this weekend - we didn't break a thing'" ,'I"he Pro Stock competiiion managed to seat some for the toughest and popular (with the west coast crowd) riKers in the semi-final round. After convincing wins in their respective first round confrontations, Vance paired with Keyte and Mason with Carpenter. Keyte tried a little too hard to beat Vance off the line and red lighted, giving Vance an automatic win. The Mason/Carpenter duel was much closer with the 40-year-old grandfather, Mason, motoring his 1260cc Kawasaki on by Carpenter on the big end. In the final against Vance, Mason chose the left lane. which all the winning Pros used. Mason said, "I flat out beat the guy... he cut a bener light on me, he left on me, and I JUSt went by him." Mason went on to thank his sponsors. MTC Engineering. Web Cam, Performance Machine, and GS Performance. In the Pro Comp final. long-time Harley campaigner Jim McClure made a valiant effort to pick off the current champ, but his best was nOI good enough and Stetson notched his 11th consecutive Pro Comp win. Stetson's sponsors include Henry's Machined Parts. Vance&: Hines Racing, Wiesco and Tsubaki. Stetson said, in TC!gards to McClure's Harley. "Nitro. NQ'er trust nitro. Nitro can do it. He \\tenLl60 against me in the final pass'" The Super Modified class was a hPJbed of rumor and action. The points battle between Godwin and Giordano was very tight and Giordano was said to be the one to beat beczause he has recently been running SOme unofficial sub-lO-second runs a~his local track in Atco. New Jersey. That threat looked to be real after he cui a 10.04 during time trials and then a 10.01. which should be good for a new record, on his semi-final round. But, Godwin knew what he had to do and cut the good light he needed, gating Giordano by hall a bitelength. About this time Godwin thought to himself. "Aw nuts, he is gping to go around me...which he didn't'" Godwin wenI home with a healthy chunk of Honda contingency money and made his sponsors, Vance &:' ines Racing and Banzai Cycle Supply, very happy. xOther class winners included double champ "Crazy" Ed Malkiewicz, who won the Stock class aboard a GP.z750 Kawasaki and Super Eliminator on a Honda CX500 Turbo. Ohio's Lance Boyer piloted his Suzuki to the Modified Eliminator title and Jim Cooper from Connecticut took the Competition Eliminator title, setting a new record in the process. • ru AT LORETTA'S {) ·11 & PONCA .. ~n,.lt l eet. ,~ '1\11 CC') 00 0') The top Amateur motocro6S racers meet.once a year at Ponca City for the NMA title and at Loretta Lynn's for the AMA Amateur Motocross Championships.
