In the most recent outing in Sweden, Freddie passed/pushed by Kenny on the last lap and won by one-sixteenth of a second! Shades of mile track racing here in the States. Spencer, who will turn 22 next December, is on the brink of becoming the youngest rider to ever win the FlM title. He has been in the top three places nine out of the II races and has only one mechanical setback. When running, his most distant finish was a fourth place at the German GP. For "King Kenny," he has been in the top th.ree eight out of II and has twice finished-in fourth place, France and Yugoslavia. But Kenny' has not had a single mechanical failure all year in Europe. His one setback came when he ran outof gas on the last lap in the Italian GP at Monza. So out of a combination of 22 races, the two Amerians have had only one breakdown. There is another record that may never be topped. What a credit to both crews from Honda and Yamaha who handle the wrenches week to week and the lastminute track changes. In actuality, Robertshas never been riding better. Last March he won the Daytona 200, and a few weeks later he won a non-championship event at Imola, Italy on the same track he will race Spencer for the title in September. His only breakdown for the entire season, hundreds of laps and as many .0 Husky'. new four-stroke I. expected to be .v.i1.ble .oon, we thought we'd bring you. little preview. On September 4 CMC will host the Four-Stroke Championship at Saddleback Park, and then on September 5, they'll be back at Saddleback with a $!JOOO Pro purse MX sponsored by IRC Tires. Call the folks at CMC for more information. Their number is 714/557-!J!J2!J. That number for CMC will only be good through August 31. Effective September 3, the number will be changed to 714/261 -8116. The July 31 British GP round of the World Championship Road Race Series was taped by NBC's Sporlsworld and will reportedly be telecast miles, was the chain-adjuster failure at Laguna Seca in the Camel Pro Series National in July. One lousy chain adjuster for an entire seasonl Crew chief Kel Carruthers and group will never match that again and it has to rank as one of the major seasonal achievements of all time. With the title at stake on the final race - then what? Roberts says he is going to call it quits in Europe and stay home in '84 with his kids. Spencer is engaged to be married but no date is in sight. This means that Freddie could have at least another decade of racing and winning in Europe. In a way it is too bad that it all had to come down to this the final event to decide it all.!,or years John Surtees and later Mike Hailwood, would show up, win all or most of the FlM events, and take the title home as had been predicted before the first race was ever run. In any other year but this one the six wins by Freddie or the five victories by Kenny would have been good enough to wrap up the title weeks ago. It is a real tribute to two fast men that started out as young kids from small towns, racing any and all dirt tracks they could find and then going on to domirtate world road racing like no others before them. When the final nag drops on our Labor Day weekend, one or both riders will come home to America with more than 11 millon from various in September. The network is considering taping the final round of the series, the San Marino GP at Imola, Italy, on September 4. Drop them a line, urging them to do so, if you'd like to watch the race that will see either Freddie Spencer or Kenny Roberts win the World Championship. The latest Cry from the riders from around the world who compete annually in the bump-and-go 500cc races in a different country each week is, "Don't send any more American riders over here'" Too late, we already have; two more dirt trackers turned road racers by the names of Randy Mamola and Eddie Lawson. Randy will end up third in the final stand· ings, rookie-in-Europe Eddie will bag fifth place. Our National Anthem must be just about worn out over there. In five of the II events, the Yanks have run 1-23.ln two of those five sweeps they ran 1-2-3-41 Regardless of who wins the title in September, Team America (Freddie, Eddie, Kenny and Randy) have cut one hell of a trail across the globe.
