McMahon, back In the saddle at CoronaMX By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, AUG. 12 Hernia or no hernia, Malcolm Smith's Vince McMahon (Yam) can still win. After a month's lay-off due to a hernia operation, McMahon was back in full operating condition after taking the win in the 250cc Pro class at Corona Raceway, But, McMahon had to survive a second-moto showdown with Kawasaki-mounted Paul McLain. In the first moto, McMahon captured the holeshot which was all he needed to take the win. McLain finished a distant second followed by Keith Williamson (Yam), Sun west Yamaha's Steve Cardillo and Anaheim Suzuki's Chris Fleming. All the action took place during the second moto, when McLain shot into the lead inches ahead of Fleming, McMahon and Cardillo. By the end of lap one, McMahon slipped by Fleming and set after McLain. A few turns later, McMahon was breathing heavily down McLain's back, but McLain never let up. For the next four laps the two leaders were handleliar to handlebar in every turn. On h f( hIM . Il'd d . h t e l tap, cLam co I e Wit a lapped rider, causing McLain to crash. McMahon overtook the lead, but in a good sportsman-like move, McMahon gave the lead back to McLain and the battle continued. However, a lap later McMchon shoved by McLain for the lead. A few turns later McLain overshot a turn and lost three positions. Fleming took second ahead of Williams, Cardillo and McLain. Results PEE WEE: I. JecobSwein (Kaw); 2. Robert Naber (Kaw); 3. Hoffman smokes Pros at DeAnza MX By Kit Palmer SUNNYMEAD, CA, AUG. 14 Spectro's Richard "Chard" Hoffman (Hon) cruised to vic. h 125 P I ' h tory In t e cc ro c ass wit a flawless I-I score today at DeAnza Cycle Park. Not only did Hoffman capture the 125cc Pro win, but he also topped all the 250cc and Open Pros after all Pros started on the same line. The only rider who put some pressure on Hoffman was a fellow I25cc dasser, Answer Products' Andy Ellis (Suz). Suzuki Country's David Williams (Suz, 250) stole the holeshot at the start of moto one while Hoffman was found back in the fifth spot. However, it didn't seem to bother Hoffman much because by the end of the second lap Hoffman had control of the second position. HoHman then reeled in Williams and took over the lead by the fifth lap. From then on, Hoffman's fast pace took him across the finish line first. Finishing about five seconds behind Hoffman was Ellis. Third went to Sun west Yamaha's Chris Lance (Yam) while Williams took fourth. Moto two was again all Hoffman's. When the checkered flag appeared Hoffman held on to a slight advan tage over Ellis. Williams finished third overall, but he still captured the 250cc Pro win ahead of Dale Dondel (Yam). Lee Scheffers (Hon) took the Open Pro wI'n followed by Ken Yarnall (Hon). N' k 01'Iver (Y am ) used a I -2 ta II y IC to capture the win in the 125cc Novice class after battling most of the day with Suzuki-mounted Phillip C. Fontena (Suz). Fomena settled with a . t h' d' h' f' outing, but he came Ir m IS ust back in molO two for the moto win. DaVI'd Spencer (Ka W) fi nls hed second . in moto one, however, he DNF the second. A 5-~ score gave Greg Itson (Yam) third overall. PEE WEE: 1. Lee Ford (Yaml; 2. Troy Haling (SuII. MINI BEG: 1. Rick LaahIey(Kewl; 2. Adem Fitzger. .•• __ • By Ace Reporter OAHU, HA, JULY 29 A dry two-lane freeway greeted the Friday night racers at Tommy Uejo's Action Promotions TT. Wide radius corners, a streamlined infield and no track watering provided a predictably slippery surface that proved spectacularly that powerslides were the key lO fast lap times. Guy Key showered the turn-three wall repeatedly in a vain attempt lO catch l25cc Novice winner Blayne Soma, but a powder berm with the density of cotton candy did him in. The first moto holeshot was the sole property of ex-Mini ace Shane Kawakami, riding Soma's practice bike. Key snu/:k under Kawakami for the lead a few laps later, but lost the back end in the hairpin powder berm on the next lap. Saving a certified over-the-bars highside by steering the front fender with his hands was miraculous, but the incident unloaded Kawakami as he rear-ended the headstanding Key. Key led for a few more laps before the same corner slid his bike to the back of the pack via a dusty lowside. Kelly Pahjo inherited the lead, and Guy charged his way back to fifth via the sweeper slide show. Calvin Agena and Soma were 3-4 and Key couldn't get by before the checkered. The second moto saw Key split, with only Soma's second keeping him honest, and Agena edging Pahio for third. The final run-off molO was another battle, with Soma edging Key for the win and Agena/Pahio finishing in a tight decision for tlte ~-4 slots. The Open Expert winner, Answer Products' Terry Wood, was another slide specialist. His runaway win in moto one was poetry in flowing motion, but the charge through the Expert pack in molO two was breathtaking, as he sliced his way up lO second place behind Stu Whiuingham to claim the overall for the night. 'smaelDNF Adventurers Poker Run By Jim Maloney GLENDALE, CA, AUG. 14 Hurricane Ismael, already demoted to a tropical storm by, SoCal's bewildered weathermen, failed to dampen the enthusiasm of 18~ participants in the First Annual Adventurers Motorcycle Poker Run held in and around the San Gabriel Mountains today. Jim Kran tz, of the United Sidecar Association, kept the run of luck going by drawing first prize, a Suzuki Shuttle. with a pat four aces! Despite early-morning thunderings and threatening lightning flashes, a respectable turnout gathered at Suzuki of Glendale for route sheets and the traditional coffee and donuts. Among the five-card enthusiasts were roadrider luminaries such as sidecar guru Doug Bingham and Jess Holder President of Area B of the Southern California Motorcycle Association. Part of the resurgent AMA D-37 Roadrider Division, this event was advertised as "all mountain roads," and fairly lived up to its advance notices. Getting out of town was accom· plished by following the meandering eight-mile course of Chevy Chase Drive, past many imposing dwellings owned by those who can afford both a Mercedes and a BMW! From there the riders ascended into the steep but weB-banked curves of the Angeles Crest and Angeles Forest Highways to the first secret check. After this "pit SlOp" (with appro-' priate accommodations), the pokerrunners followed more obscure high desert and mountain roads lO a lunch stop in Wrightwood. This known check was perfectly located at a Chevron station next to an excellent grocery store (with bakery and deli) and one block from The Yodler, a well-known sandwich emporium and water hole. After lunch it was 60 miles of Angeles Crest and desert vistas back to Shakey's in Glendale. Back at Shakey's, another Shuttle was awarded as a door prize to a mysterious W. Nicastro of Van Nuys who had apparently left early. Gene Gray of the Pasadena Motorcycle Club was present, however, to make off with the 50/50 drawing loot. Overall, .the run was well organized, well laid-out and enjoyed by all. Two more for ConneyatCarisbad By Kenneth Stein CARLSBAD, CA, AUG. 14 Like General Sherman through Georgia, Kawasaki-mounted! John Conney continued tearing through the 125ccIntermediates on his way to becoming a Continental Motosports Club Pro rider by winning both motos at Carlsbad today. Thirteen-year-old Conney, who intends to become the youngest rider to turn Pro since Yamaha factory rider Ricky Johnson, needs five more overall victories before his birthday three months hence. Conney started poorly in the first moto. The eighth rider over.the jump
