The focal point oftoday's com peri-'
tion came in the final event, the Formula I showdown between Kevin
Schwantz, John Minonno, Doug
Polen, Wayne Even and Vernon Davis.
Minonno, Even, and Schwantz all
had wins in other classes coming into
the final, with Polen and Davis sure
to be factors in the ou tcome. Eager to
get a jump, those at the front of the
gxid got a little anxious and crowded
into too small an area to comfortably
accommodate so many large bikes.
Schwantz got up.on the rear wheel of
his Yamaha and, as he came down,
bumped Minonno twice. The second
shunt put Minonno into Polen and
sent him over the curb. Davis took
e~asive action to the right and barely
escaped being creamed by David Ray.
Davis described what next took
place. "I saw the crashes out of the
corner of my eye and moved to the
right and I just barely brushed somebody (Ray). Schwantz came out clean
and he was just ahead of me going to
t~ first turn. He went in too hot and
scattered it in front of me and just
bluely got his arm out of the way as I
went around. Then I just shut it
down and cruised back for the restart
aJid to see if anybody got hurt."
jldinonno received a serious conclISsion although he was released
from the hospital later in the evening.
Rolen too was severely shaken and
got the benefit of the ambulance ride,
being treated for minor abrasions
and released also. Schwantz was not
hurt and managed to take his position for the restart.
'q'rack official Derry Gardner appealed for law and order on the line
and with a quick £lag being waved by
starter Dart Brinkman, the subsequent
aftempt was clean and smooth.
Schwantz took the holeshot with Even
and Joe Patton claiming the next two
slots. Davis and Sealy got around'
Patton on the fourth lap and he
pulled into the pits shortly thereafter
with a mechanical malady.
Schw.antz rode without bobbling
to emerge with first place money, followed by Even and the XV920 of
Davis, to conclude the program.
