CeDlral PipeliDe ... cI'J ::s ::s <: bll Dennis "Skylab" Hawthorne won the Open Expertclau in Ark.n. . . Hall cakewalks to Midwest win By Sharon Jones FORT SMITH, AR, JULY 10 Mid-90-degree temperatures, high humidity and 30-minute motos combined to hamper the lap times of many riders at the Sports Field-promoted Midwest motocross, but Eric Hall didn't seem to have any problems. He SlOpped off the National traillO make a cakewalk of the 125cc Pro division. Hall took the first-moto start on his Honda with ease and was never contested, holding a ~o-second lead at the finish over Bart Shiflett. jeff Schumacher, who was nursing a sprained wrist, made a good attempt to reel in Shiflett, but pain and heat took their toll and "Shu" dropped off his pace. In the second moto, Hall went around the first tum in a full-lock slide to best out Cole Knight, with Shiflett in third. Hall pudive seconds on Knight in only one lap. Shiflett made his move on Knight on lap three, but Hall was long gone. Schumacher went by Bill Fullerton and Knight soon after to hold down third place to the finish. Hall was pleased with his twomoto sweep. "Now I've got enough money to get home. It's a long ways home to Washington." Results 125 EX: 1. Eric H.II; 2. B8n Shill8lt; 3. J8ff Schu..-. 250 EX; 1. Wood, who rides crosscountry races every week, showed up at the Saturday night motocross races at Ross Downs and blew away the competition in the I25cc class. Wood said, "Heck, motocross is easy after racing CJ"9$S,-<;ountq; dodging trees, rocks, holes and everything at full speed. Here at Ross Downs you know the track and where the holes are at, that makes it easy." Ronnie Camp set on Wood's rear fender until a mishap put him out of contention. The fans were yelling and screaming as Richard Patte.rson and jim Meyers tried to catch Wood, but they finished behind the speedy cross-coun try racer. Arron Davis got his 50cc automatic flying in the "heavy weights" class as Russ Cannon and Tim Clements chased him to the finish line. These little guys really put on a show, as eight riders left the line for three laps of handlebar knocking. Dave Fletcher, Clint Carlton and Casey Pinkston all did battle in the 60cc class, finishing in that order. The 80cc events were crowded, as four mOlOS were needed to score the winners AMA style. Craig Hickman put on a superb show, riding the track wide open almost all the way around. Dave Fletcher, Mark Rainwater, and Kelly Stephens all tried hard to catch him but finished in that order. Steve Maiden won the 200cc points after fighting a fierce duel wtih Mark Meucci and Chris Pinkston. All three led the two motos at one time, but it was Maiden coming out on top. Meucci and Pinkston were second and third. Theresa Pinkston, wife of Chris, won the Powder Pu(( events. Lambert lambastes opposition at Capitol City MX By Joe Milian AUSTIN, TX, AUG. 5 The regular Friday night fracas took place under threatening clouds this evening at Austin Moto Sport Park. While jagged streaks of light played across the eastern sky, lightning in the form of Brian Lambert struck the 250cc Novice class. Lambert created all the sparks en route to a two moto runaway, leading from start to finish in both heats. His only problems cropped up briefly in the latter stages of his track tours when he had to ease his way past lapped riders. After a three year absence from motocross, Lambert has lost none of his aggressiveness. His stay in the Novice ranks will most likely be a brief one. Hank Hodes, who just moved up from the Beginner ranks and beat Lambert last week, stood no chance tonight. Hodes got a poor start in moto one and did well to scramble back to fourth position at the flag, trailing Lambert, Lynn Bailey and Walter Birchfield. Lambert pulled his disappearing act to kick 0(( the second round, with Hodes fairing much better off the line. Birchfield, Bailey and Hodes swapped positions through the first several turns, until Hodes took over the runner-up slot (or good on the second lap. The only excitement occurred when james Deister nailed Andy Thompson as he was getting up from a crash. Bailey and Hodes tied for second overall, with the second heat performance o( Hodes nudging Bailey to third. Pity the plight of Matt Raby. He has been chasing Robert Tiemann all summer in the I25cc Novicedivision. Ticmann'$ I-I showing tonight was picture perfect in its execution and painfully apparent to his opposition. Raby and Ron Parks traded second and third place finishes with the deciding moto going to Raby, handing him second overall. Kirk Clovis' e(£orts yielded only a frustrating fourth. ""rita Pr_ Boston bakes Denton MX By Sharon Jon.s DENTON, NE, JULY ~I Mike Boston once again dominated the 125 and 250cc Experts at Denton Raceway by winning all four motos with ease. Only National number 52, David Weak, could keep up with Boston's green machines. Boston took control of the 250cc Experts right from the first tum. Weak in second and john McKinney in third never could come close enough to Boston to strike. The second moto was also controlled by Boston (rom start to finish. Greg Baade enjoyed second place for three laps until Weak buzzed past. McKinney did his best to challenge Baade, but had to settle for fourth. Boston also ruled hte 125cc Expert class. Weak kept Boston in sight for awhile, but a broken shock gave him a DNF. Tom Price, who was all alone in third, happily inherited second. Corey Cope flew through the pack to challenge Price, but time ran out and Cope was a bikelength short at the flag. Cope followed Boston through the first corner in the second moto as Tom Price and Bobby Lowman tangled on the start straight and were left on the ground. Kevin Wol£ ran a hard race (or lhird, but not without a fight from Baade. Boston finished 20 seconds ahead of second place Cope. After his four moto sweep, Boston relaxed and enjoyed some waterme.lon with his friends. "The track was in great shape," Boston commented, "but it was a little too hot." Results OVER 3D: ,. By Brian George RAPID CITY, SD, AUG 6 their Summer motocross series moved to the highway 79 today in the first of a two-day motocross double-header, and the response (rom riders was overwhelming. One hundred and thirty riders from eight states turned out to compete under sunny skies with very warm temperatures, and despite some hanging dust, the tight racecourse provided some exciting action throughout the afternoon. In the Professional classes, Rice Cycles' Dave Molder took a pair of wins home to Gillett in the 250cc and 500cc Pro categories, dominating all four of his motos and coming across the finish line with comfortable margins in every round. Black Hills Yamaha's Todd Gikling topped both of the 125cc Pro motos, but had to settle for a pair of seconds in the 250cc action behind Molder's Honda. Round one of the 250cc Pros was all Dave Molder as he took over the lead in the early going, and proceeded to build a considerable lead by the finish. Gikling gave chase from second early, as did Mike Friend and Stork, but none of the top five riders could come close. Molder wound up with a 15-second margin over Gikling, while Stork nipped Friend in the closing stages of the race for third. Results MINI A; 1. Mark Mu.ller (Sull; 2. Da.. ZUhr (Hon); 3. Gikling goes for two at Sturgis Rally finale By Brian George STURGIS, SD, AUG 7 Round 17 of the Borderline Racing Association's 21-race summer motocross series moved to Sturgis Raceway today for the second round of a double-header weekend of motocross, and over 130 riders from as far away as New jersey were on hand to race in the over 100degree temperatures. Black Hills Yamaha's Todd Gikling walked away with the overall victories in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro categories, with a pair of mow wins in the I25cc hal£, and consistem second-place rides in the 250s. Moto winners in the 250cc Pro action were Mike Friend and Dave Molder, but neither rider could overcome poor start and heavy dust in their other
