Novices Tim Stults, Tracy Collins, Rodney Ginn and Andy James followed the Yamamotos in the early going, which just laps later saw Stults move into second when Ron had problems and DNF. Rusty used the situation to take a free and clear win for the third week in a row while Stults held on for second by beating Ginn, who had it out with Collins in an across-the-Iine decision for third. James held on to finish in fifth. Rusty Yamamoto came back to trounce both the 500cc and Open A main events to add to the glory of it all and whipped the troops on his490 Yamaha YZ-based machine, previously ridden by Ron. Yamamoto and 480 Honda CR-mounted Jackie Smith dueled it out in the 500cc A main all the way to the checkered £Jag with Smith taking over for a lap, then Yamamoto would do the same, seesawing to the end, which saw Yamamoto take the checkered flag when it counted for win number two over Smith and Jeff Seldon. Yamamoto took the lead in the Open A mai nand was never seriously challenged, except for a brief bump from the rear on Smith's part. Yamamoto capped off his second triple win in as many weeks to put Smith in second and third again to Seldon's 500 Honda. Results OPEN EX: 1, Tony Cruickshank: 2. Ron YlmlImoto; 3. Anderson, Sun shine at MulkeyMX By Brian Barnes MCMINNVILLE, OR, JULY 31 For the second consecutive weekend, northwest motocrossers were treated to perfect racing conditions as Mulkey ORV 44 Park opened it's gates for another event. York Yamaha's Jim Anderson took home the lion's share of today's purse, winning all four 125cc and 250cc races, while Chuck Sun scored both Open' wins, displaying his new Chuck Sun Products riding gear in the process_ The 125cc class found Anderson, R.W. Racing's Rob Watilo and Yamhill Yamaha's Doug Lange out front as the first moto got underway. Eric Hall and Suzuki-mounted Dennis Ostriem trailed the trio, with Hall moving into the third spot on lap three. Anderson had a mall lead over a Watilo/Hall duel that lasted until lap seven when Hall took over the second spot, and from that point on Anderson, Hall, Watilo, Tim Michlitsch and Lang cruised for the first five spots. The second round found Lange, Dave Hettinga, Watilo and Hall up front as the pack rounded turn one with Hall moving past both Watilo and Hettinga to challenge Lange, who was ridinga very strong race. On lap four Hall got past the Yamaha mount of Lange and into the lead, but Anderson had wasted no time either and on lap seven had moved into second. Hall tried to hold off the charge by Anderson, but when the pair took the white flag, Anderson stormed past taking his second win. Hall's fine effort gave him the runnerup. Results WEE PEE WEE: ,. Shockey won the first mota but was passed, and faded in the second to let Wright win with a 2-1. OMC's "Son of President," Mark Hall, bested Tom Fitzgerald togo I-I and scarf the 125cc Expert cash. It was really hot I The heat wave blanketing the western United States hasn't forgotten Boise. The races are kept short - five laps. This, to hopefully get done before dark. In the heat, the racers felt that five laps was more than enough I One guy who probably could have gone longer was Ron Dillon. Dillon is one of Idaho's premier desert racers. He struggled behind Wright and Shockey in the 250cc Expert class, crashed mightily over the stadium jumps and appeared to be having some major suspension problems. Wright and Shockey, both aboard Hondas, put on a tremendous show in the first mota. Shockey screamed through the short switchback straights on the first half of the course, traveling into a giant-bermed corner at considerable speed. Wright was faster over thejumps that were to come, however, and he closed tight on Shockey on the last lap. At the finish, it was Shockey by half a bikeleng-th. Mota two looked like it was to be a rerun of the first as Shockey's CR streaked into the lead. The weather appeared to have taken its toll on him, though_ Wright was in front quickly and Shockey dropped back to a comfortable second. Wright's twoat-a-time passage over the stadium jumps was a source of dandy spectating during his win. Results MINI B: 1. Jon Irby (klw); 2. Eric Hitch (Klw); 3. AI Russel (Ylm). MINIINT; 1. Aston's back at Sacto MX By Nuclear Neukam SACRAME TO, CA, AUG. 5 Tim Aston is a proud young man; he has every right to be. The Kawasaki Support rider, who was hit by an automobile while riding his street bike JUSt weeks before the Hangtown National and lost the lower portion of his right leg as a result, was back on the track for the first time since the devastating accident. Not only did he race, with the help of a special prothesis, but he won the first 125cc Pro mota at Sacramento Raceway's Friday night stadium motocross races. All those at the track Friday - spectators, racers and track personnel - went home with a real good feeling inside. In the first I25cc Pro mota Rodney Harriger, riding his brother's Kawasaki, pulled the holeshot with Aston and Kawasaki-mounted Frank Sigrist hot on his tail. The pace was fast as the three Kawasakis smoked around the track. Then Aston made his move over a series of jumps and £Jew into the lead. He kept the throule cable taught as he opened a good-sized lead by the time the checkered flew. Harriger secured second, with Sigrist third. Sigrist pulled the holeshot in the second mota, with Harriger in second. Aston came off the line a lillIe slow but put his Kawasaki into overdrive and set his sights on the leaders. Harriger put some distance on Sigrist as Aston closed in. Aston swooped Sigrist and then started whittling Harriger's lead away. With the crowd on its feet yelling and screaming, Aston got close but time ran_out and Harriger won the rilotoand the overall. Aston's second gave him second overall and Sigrist took third overall with third. Results PP NOV ,: 1. Donnl Mitchell (Suz); 2. Caron Thom_n (Hon). EXP 1: I. MX By Bill Spencer SANTA CLARA, CA, JULY 29 Fifteen-year-old Tony Flores almost didn't ride tonight's Moto-X Fox night at the Great America Santa Clara P.A.L. track when a rather light turnout of Pros made him the only 125cc entry. But after a discussion with his father, the Palo Alto Yamaha rode, and won big. Flores, a mini biker just a few months back, has been riding right through the competition and tonight was no exception with a wire-to-wire win in the first round of the cOmbined Expert class despite watering the track when a radiator on his YZ gave up the cause. A borrowed head gasket put things right for the second round and he hit the gate so hard some thought he might have busted a wheel. Instead, he came from the back of the pack to quickly pass the other four riders and head off for a big win over Thea Barnhard and John Dauth. Results OPEN NOV: 1. An Klingbeil (Mli); 2. They must have been at Sand Hill Ranch this week because the course were lined with spectators and the racing was excellent all evening. Chris Plain of Oakland Yamaha, Craig Christain of Cycle Gear, and Kimo Casey on a new Yamaha rounded turn one in the Pro event, three abreast. All aboard 125's, Tim Leat cut under the three, knocking Casey out of the lineup and Christain took the lead. Craig stayed in top form every minute as Plain was breathing down his neck on every turn and over every jump. With the new stadium track, most of the racing seems to be in the air, and as Plain wouldjumpa
