Arnef returns for CRCMX win By Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA, AUG 7 The little old ladies of Pasadena blackballed the idea of having 700 motorcyclists in town for the Amateur Super- 38 cross. With this being the case, the CRC held their regularly scheduled motocross at Indian Dunes. Adding an extra challenge to the already challenging Shadow Glen track was the fact that the racers had to ride the course backwards. The weather presented yet another challenge as it was not only hot hut quite humid. Ed Arnet underwent surgery on his knee about seven months ago and is just now starting to make a comeback in the 500cc Pro class. The Honda of Pasadena rider was the top money winner, downing Marc Johnson and Mark Anderson. Pete Snorteland was a threat to Amet but went home early due to an engine failure. The four-man 250cc Pro class' first moto saw Arnet pull his Honda into the lead with a determined Snorteland after him. On a back comer Snorteland slid by Arnet to take over the lead. It wasn't long before Arnet regained the lead while hauling through the sandwash. The Honda of Amet continued to run strong while the Yamaha of Snorteland' developed trouble. Through the finish line it was Arnet, Snorteland and Johnson. With Snorteland already on the road home when the second moto fired off, Arnet had the lead as expected and took the final moto win over Anderson and Johnson. Overall it was Amet, Johnson and Anderson. Glen Wells was on another seekand-destroy mission for BTS Lubricants. Though Wells happened to be the fastest rider in the 250cc Intermediate line-up, he missed out on the overall due to a first-moto crash. The first turn on the Shadow Glen course is known to cause a few spills. It was Wells' tum to bite the dust and this ruined his first moto. Picking up his Honda as soon as possible, Glen continued and worked up to fifth. Bill Harry, Ron Economu, Tony Spear and Jim Weltman were ahead of him. A two-man battle developed in the final moto as Wells took the early lead. Wells then led the entire race with Economu (Yam) following. As the race progressed Wells didn't have to worry about Economu, who broke down along the way and took a DNF. Spear suddenly advanced to second place and finished ahead of Tony Siebert, Weltman and Harry. Overall it was Spear, Wells, Harry and Weltman. Results PEE WEE: 1. Jamie Welty (SUl); 2. O'Mara, Holley, Locey headline CRC/Granada Yamaha MX By Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA, JULY 31 The California Racing Club presented the Granada Yamaha $2000 MX at Indian Dunes and with that kind of money came an exceptionafIin.e-up of Pro riders. American Honda's Johnny O'Mara placed himself in front of the 125cc Pro class with Eric Kehoe running in second aboard his Honda. The helpful holeshots that Zoli Meszaros took in both of the 250cc Pro class motos just weren't enough to hold back the charging Yamaha riders Jim Holley and Roger Hensley. Answer Products rider Tim Locey was shot down in the 250cc Pro race with a flat tire but he clinched the 500cc Pro title. Never before in a CRC race was there a star-studded line-up of 125cc Pro riders as there was in this event. Indian Dunes is home territory for O'Mara and he took the holeshot in the first moto of the 125cc Pros. Going after the Honda was the Cagiva of Russ Wageman. Kehoe placed his Honda behind Wageman and Yamaha-mounted A.j. Whiting was in fifth. Kehoe soon moved around Wageman to take over second place and Russ stayed in third throughout the remainder of the race. Before long it was a rally between two bikes as Honda riders O'Mara and Kehoe were 1-2 and Cagiva riders Wageman and Ron Turner were 3-4. Turner advanced 10 the fourth place spot as a result of Whiting dropping out of action. Whiting was not the only rider to suddenly dissappear as Kal-Gard's Jack Greenberg was in the top five at first till the porcelain broke off his spark plug and stopped his Kawasaki from firing. O'Mara took the first wave of the checkered flag with a 14second lead. O'Mara blasted out ahead in the final molO with Kehoe proving to be the second-fastest rider. A good struggle for third place was going on between Robert Laughlin and T umer with Turner overcoming the newer Pro and taking third place. Wageman broke down and DNF. Two firsts won O'Mara the top award over Kehoe, Turner and Laughlin. Results PEE WEE: 1. Jeff Willoh (Yam). 60 NOV: 1. Torry Ayl"wonh (K_); 2. Bobby Wine (Yam); 3. R~ Ringu. (Yam). ~ INT: 1. Beau McMinn won the 60cc Beginner race on llis Yamaha. Yamaha swept the 8Occ:Beginner division one race as Steve Jarrett, Kaboose Massaro and Ke~in Bussey controlled the lOp three positions. Chris Young aboard his Yamaha edged out Kawasaki riders Willie Culp and Philip Gould for /he 80cc Beginner division two troEhy. Green machines didn't leave without a measure of success as Jacob Swain took his 60cc Kawasaki to the Intermediate win, Chris Bamsey won the 80cc Novice class and Thayne Zito rode through to the 80 Intermediate victory. The 80cc Beginner division one race was perhaps the most exciting Mini race of the night. Steve Jarrett took his Yamaha to the holeshot in the first moto action. The double jumps are often a turning point, for if a rider clears the doubles he can gain yardage. Kevin Bussey didjust this as he cranked his Yamaha while Jarrett was cautious through this section. Bussey took over the lead from Jarrett in mid-air, although later in the race Jarrett built up some courage and started to fly further 0(( the doubres. Bussey held the lead to the checkeI:ed with Jarrett in second ahead of Massaro and Mike Corry. Jarrett took the early lead in the final molO. As in the first moto, Bussey was right behind Jarrett but flew past him over the doubles. They were 1-2- till Bussey lost control and dropped his bike. Jarrett regained the lead with Massaro and Brandon Sperling passing Bussey. The 2-1 tally belonging to Jarrett earned him the tallest trophy. Bussey took a bad break in the final molO and his inconsistent I'4 tally won him third place with Massaro winning second place with his 3-2 tally. Results 60 BEG: 1. Baau McMinn (Yam); 2.
