johnson/Strong war, which was being led by Patterson's 500 KTM. Patterson is the hometown favorite and led johnson Strong and Canadian Mike Young across the line, following Green and Fay, who put 10 bikelengths on third-place Patterson. Green totally dominated the evening by topping his 250 and Open heat races, both mains and came storming back to take the trophy dashes and the majority of the purse home to Lake Stevens with him. Smith sinks Baylands 125s By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL, JULY 21 Rod Smith returned from the National tour and kept up a good battle at Baylands night motocross in both 125 and Open R.ndy Green won the 260 .nd Open cl......t Bellinghem. (File photo.) had to settle for third after some mechanical problems in the second moto. Intermediate action saw twO new member guests, "joker" joe Roark and "Lickit" Leon Price, lead the pack at the 1-2 positions both motos. But the battle was still raging for the nat three spots and after the dust settled "Clawed" Claude finished third, with "Rosy" Ron fourth and "Discharge" Don in 5th. The Novice class was full of thrills and spills as the leaders gassed it and crashed it in slick conditions on an over-watered track. "juicy" jay won the first moto, but bike problems in moto two left him out of the race. "Loose Lips" Lee rode hard and fast to take the overall win with moto finishes of 2-1. Pushing into second place after several crashes was "Ball Bearing" Bob who aced out "Luscious" ,Linda with a dazzling pass in the second moto. "Dragon" Dick gassed it to show his style in motQ two, but had to settle for fourth oveJ:a11. Placing fifth was "Rocket" Rodney, who was tuning up for a Sunday race at the Dunes. Green blazes to Bellingham FT wins By Clay Ught BELLINGHAM, WA, JULY ~o Randy Green, fresh off the AMA Camel Pro racing circuit after placing seventh at Santa Fe, was back home in Bellingham 38 to show the spectators what he had learned on the tour. Green blew a hole in the evening's program by taking the 250cc Pro main over Californian Roger Thompson, and winning the Open Pro, beating Mickey Fay. Fast time of the evening went to National number I~ Fay, who posted a 17.06 on a 500 Honda. Green, however, was out to break it and got in a good run, but was second fastest on his 600 Honda with a 17.09. • Green sponsored by American Honda, Simpson and Panther Frames, led the 250cc main event off the line over Novice sensations Thompson, Brian McGonigal and Lance Strong. Thompson made the main the hard way by having to win his semi and take the very last ticket to the main. The most spirited ride through traffic was being attempted by Randy Roose. Roose started in row three in the 12-rider main, fell, was run over by A.j. Eschwig's Honda and then got up in last, a long, long way back. Roose picked off riders lap after lap and at the halfway £lag had worked to fourth, getting around Strong and pulling- within range of Thompson and McGonigal. Green was long gone though, moving out to a lead the length of the straight. Thompson shook off McGonigal to go after Green's Honda Support 250 CR, bur to no avail as the rookie Expert took the win by a good distance over Thompson, McGonigal, Roose, Bobby Walters and Dave Stering. The most exciting main event of the evening was undoubtebly the Open final. Due to Castle Rock talinga weekoff,AMA Pro5again came in hoardes. Twelve riders lined up in rows of 6-4-2, and once under way it was Green and Fay 1-2 down the stretch. By the time the pack hit turn one, Kirk Strong had put his Seattle Honda Harley Davidson into the lead and came blistering down the straight with Green, Fay, Randy Patterson and Californian jeff johnson in tow. johnson rode an XR750 Harley-Davidson and wanted to win, hearing about the hundred-dollar bounty if a 750 wins, and pressured Patterson, who was doing the same to Fay. Strong led for the first three laps, then saved what could have been a nasty get-off to regain control and drop to fifth behind johnson. Green took over the lead on lap four, ruining Strong's chances of a repeat win, and battled it out with Fay, who was ramming from behind on the Bel-Ray/N-D/Marushin/American Honda 500. The most spectacular dice was the Patterson/- classes, with the likes of jerome Heiberger holding him off in the bigbike class, and leading young Tony Flores to the 125cc win. Smith aced both 125cc Pro motos, having come home early to rejuvenate bikes before the last three outdoor Nationals. Tony Flores did the chasing, but had no chance for a pass as the YamaI1a Suppon rider had it all planned just right. Craig Christian had one radiator wash the track, but held for a third. In the 250cc Pro show, Christian aboard his Karl's Motor Yamaha, was very aggresive a he won both motos with relative ease. Rich My then got buried in traffic in the first round. finishing seventh and then came back to chase Christian in the finale, but that was all. john Dauth ran a calculated second in the first round, but ran amok in the second to take the second overall. john Saggau copped the third overall in front of My then with a 3-4. The full moon showed problems for the 250 juniors as jeff Wright handily held the post position with a 3-1 overall win, while Bruce Hoppe was second with a 5-3 over Geo Pritchett. Craig Mcgear beat Pritchett in the first round with the 1-2 punch, but they nosedived in the second round finishing sixth and 11th, respectively in round two. jerome Heiberger and his jim Saitone Honda rode 0(£ with both wins in the Open Pro, but it was Rod Smith tailing him throughout both motos. Smith was well placed in both races and in the second round the two riders nudged as they went over the double jumps, with Smith getting the lead. But Heiberger, not known for giving up, repassed and set sail, winning by a wide margin. Brett Cahor.s and Andy Tressor split the third-place spots with Tressor getting the overall, as Cabors had a tumble in the first round, finishing seventh while Dan Baker took the fourth overall with a 4-5 count. Trouer tromps UttIe Olde Vets By Beverly McCrory MADERA, CA, JULY 16 A hot and muggy night awaited the riders and spectators for round three of the O'Nealsponsored race series at Madera's Little Okie Track. Gary Trover started the excitement in the junior Vet class, riding his Maico. Coming out of the first turn, he was followed by Yamaha-mounted john Showalter. Not far behind were Old Timers Bob Smart and Marsh "Iron-Man" Runyon followed by Dennis Watso~ all riding Yamahas. Watson decided by the third lap that he wasn't going to be ribbed about riding in the "Geritol Class" any longer. He gave his bike a fist fulJ of throttle and sailed past Smart and Runyon then on to take Vet rider Showalter. The checkered flag came out with Trouer taking first, Watson second (or a first in the OT class, and Vet Showalter third for a second in the Vet class. Smart and Runyon were founh and fifth to take second and third in the OT class. The second molO was the best of the two molOS. Trouer led the Vets, with Showalter in second. Runyon took first in the OT, although Smart was close behind. By the second lap, Watson was in front of both Vet and OT classes. Trouer was in second. Smart passed Runyon only to go down, letting Runyon re-claim his number two position. As the flag came out for the finish, Old Timer Watson was the first over the line to take first in class. Trouer went down, but retrieved his bike in time to take first in the Vet class. "Iron-Man" Runyon was a well-deserved second OT overall. Even more impressive is the (act that Runyon races with a wooden foot, the result of an accident at a speedway race. Results 50 PEE WEE: 1. Chell Gould (Veml; 2. Justin Quinn CSuzt 3.
