Klinzmann wins AFM Challenge By Frenk Nellis SONOMA, CA, JULY !II The American Federation of Motorcyclists North met today for the Golden Gate Challenge race. The Challenge is an annual event in which the fastest riders in California meet • 36 for a no-holds-barred, runwhat-ya-brung shootout. The combination of a $1250 purse and the upcoming August 21 AMA National at Sears Point attracted a hungry pack of riders, including Kerry Bryant, Harry Klinzrnann, Carry Andrews, Rich Oliver, Bernd Koegler, Dale Quarterly, jeH Heino and many others. With so many exceHem Nationalcaliber riders present, Vance Breese, club president, had a tough time workin/!; out the /!;fid before the race started. When the lineup was finaHy set, Carry Andrews got oH the line firs't at the start of the ChaHenge on his Hyper Cycle Kawasaki. He was foHowed by Harry Klinzmann and Kerry Bryant, while the rest of the pack foHowed. Klinzmann dove underneath Andrews in turn two and began to run away, but the two-strokes that were left in the dust at the start soon began to assert themselves. Dave Busby, Gennady Liubimsky and Chris Steward worked their TZ250s past Andrews and Bryant and set their sights on Klinzmann. Busby closed to where he could catch Klinzmann's draft and was content to ride away from Liubimsky, who found himself suddenly alone when Steward's new Dunlop slick developed cord separation problems. When the white flag came out it looked like the final positions were set, but Dave Busby had a diHerent opinion. He ducked under K1inzrnann in turn two, but was unable to make it stick in the drag race to turn three. The nimble 250 was aH over the big Kawasaki of K1inzmann. Busby rode oH and then back on the track at the exit of turn six without skipping a beat. He made a late-braking move in turn II, but the little two-stroke was overcome by the raw power of Klinzmann's Champion Moriwaki/ND/ MX Fox-sponsored Kawasaki. Busby sevtJed for second on his Shoei/Liquid Horsepower TZ250, and Liubimsky took third. Oliver, who won the Formula II race earlier in the day, took fourth, while Kerry Bryant finished firth on his Katana. The 750 Stock Production race had no favorites. The new AMA Superbike rules have made it possible for anyone to buy serious 750cc race machinery. AH of the major brands were represented, ridden by top racers. Ken Evan got oH the line first on his Cycle Imports GS750. He was foHowed by Earl RoioH on his Sea Weed Kawasaki GPz750 and Dave Garoutte on an Interceptor sponsored by Motorcycles Unlimited of Carta Madera. Evan held off RoloH's charge for the first lap, but Garoutte showed less patience and passed both of them on the brakes in turn seven. This got RoioH moving and he also passed Evan and set his sights on Garoutte. Garoutte and Roloff left Evan behind them as they screamed around the track, setting a new record for Stock motorcycles with a 1:57.41 lap. Despite this record-breaking speed, Garoutte was unable to shake RoloH. Then, going into turn seven, Garoutte locked up his rear tire and skiddered off the track. Garoutte said later, "I was sliding the Elite (rear tire) all around the track, but I guess I just hit the down shift a little too hard." Rolo£( passed him and went on to win; Garoutte kept his bike up through the dirt and got back on the track to finish second; Ken Evan was close behind in third. Results GOLDEN GATE CHALLENGE: ,. PORTLA D, OR, JULY 21 The summer motocross season is well on its way here at Portland International Raceway and once again it was a nigblof great racing. jim Anderson (York Yam/ATKlM.X.Fox) was on top of the situation tonight, taking all four races he competed in. In second place during all four of the events was Team Green's Tim Michlitsch. Each week the Mini C class has hordes of riders, and tonight was no exception. With two divisions of racing on tap, spectators were treated to some wild and furious action. In division one, Suzuki rider Ernst Roberts was on the gas during both races, taking wins over Yamaha-mounted Donald Lail. Honda rider Dave Browning was also very consistent. taking both thirds. Dave Eakin is really riding strong since getting his new Honda 250. Eakin took a two-race sweep of tonight's 250cc Intermediate race. Eakins first win came over Yamhill Yamaha's David Fox and Ceet Racings' Kyle Hall. The second race found Eakin again in front, but this time jere Meeker rode a Small Engine Specialties Husky to its limit, taking the second spot. Fox was third and Eric Clark scored his second fourth of the evening for third overall. Results WEE PEE WEE: 1. M.,hew Schweitzor (Hon); 2. Brod B,..... (Y.ml; 3. - . . Smilh (Honl. PEE WEE A: 1.
